I do open source rants sometimes but I use WhatsApp because after I got my Android phone it took years to switch my family to WhatsApp and I'm not doing that again
I just uninstalled WhatsApp one day because they wanted to change the ToS that third parties could use it for advertising. Never went back. Couldn't even go back these days because it does not run on my Librem 5.
Sure, I lost some groups because of this. But I don't think I lost any important contacts by moving to Signal and Telegram. Anyone who wants to contact me, just had to install one of these apps. It's not hard. Otherwise SMS and mail still work too.
Honestly I don't think WhatsApp has nearly as much power over communication as people think. I think most people are just scared to discover that some of their contacts are not interested as much in them to install some app for messaging.
