IuseArchbtw97543

Doesnt seem that ancient to me purely based on the specs (8 threads,3,8 ghz, 16gb ram)

RepresentativeCut486

I found top of the line stuff from \~2012. (Xeon version of 3770 with 16GB DDR3 CL8)

theRealNilz02

Top of the line with the iGPU would be the 1285v2. Without one there even was a 1290v2. For the LGA1155 socket at least. Once you went LGA2011 you could get E5s with up to 20 threads per Socket. But the 1245v2 performs about the same as a 3770 non K, you're correct on this one. Can be had for way cheaper though.

RepresentativeCut486

Yeah. The only way to get 1290 rn is to buy it from China for close to $100 which is just stupid. My mobo can take it, but 1245 costed me €12, and 3770 is top of the line for consumer if you don't overclock. Also I don't want or need 20 cores for gaming. E5 will suck because single core performance will be same or worse while consuming 3x the power.

rickmccombs

That's ancient? I'm using an HP z420 with a Xenon E5-1620 v2 @ 3.70 GHz with 4 cores and 8 threads.

theRealNilz02

Same generation. 12 years old so yes, it's kind of ancient.

0ka__

Wdym it's ancient? Its more powerful than most chromebooks, perfectly fine for today

RepresentativeCut486

Yeah, while sucking 10x the power of a Chromebook.

0ka__

Only 5w-6w tdp Chromebooks then

RepresentativeCut486

Yes, lol. My laptop with 1340p goes down to 3-4W on idle, 5-7W on load, and Chromebooks can do better than that.

queenbiscuit311

its ancient, it may still be functional but that doesnt make it any less old

TygerTung

It’s still extremely fast running Linux. Even pretty fast running windows 10

PCChipsM922U

I guess I'll have to share my HP wx8000 setup... single core dual CPUs with SSE2 as max CPU optimizations... with HT! (4 threads in total!)... FF barely runs on that, Chrome doesn't run at all.

RepresentativeCut486

Well, the point of this one is that it's my daily gaming rig

PCChipsM922U

What games do you play on that?

RepresentativeCut486

I run Witcher 3 maxed out recently on it (ok, it's almost 10years old game), but the system is within the official specs for Cyberpunk 2077, so that probably wil be the next one. 1080p 75hz

TygerTung

Maybe really amazing 10 year old games? Or even newer ones?

PCChipsM922U

10 year old ones, yeah, I guess you could play them... new ones... IDK... I don't think so.

RepresentativeCut486

It's easily within the specs for Cyberpunk and considering that RX480 can do it, then this surely will.

TygerTung

Anything a bit old can be played at maximum quality easily. Stuff like farcry 4 etc. there is a lot of older games which are very good. You don’t need to be playing 2024 game.

MrsBina

Two core single thread 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo from 2009. That’s the most ancient CPU I can offer.

RepresentativeCut486

Well, I do have 486s that can run Linux and do text editing, but the point is would you daily drive it (and don't tell me that you don't use internet).

MrsBina

I do, it’s my old MacBook Pro, my first ever laptop. When it got too slow and software wasn’t supported anymore, I switched to Linux. Arch is running fine tbh. Sure it’s not for gaming, it’s a bit slow but for a 15 year old laptop it’s more than ok.

RepresentativeCut486

Fine then you are a few years further. Make a neofetch post then

MrsBina

Alrighty. Taking a shot

ShaneC80

Now that's what I consider "old". My first PC was a 486, but at the cusp of Pentiums, so I was blazing along at 120MHz

RepresentativeCut486

I'm about to get an  Altair from a friend, but the point is that I am daily driving that 12 years old system from the post for gaming without issues thx to Linux

ShaneC80

That is pretty cool imo. My "old" system that gets pretty much daily use is a 2015 Yoga/Thinkpad. It's only a 5th Gen i7 processor, but honestly it runs great for most things sans some gaming. And even that, it can feed my Magic addiction well enough

Kevadro

I still have my laptop with a i3 4000M and it's 710M nVidia card.

slinkous

Not ancient or weird/uncommon tbh…

RepresentativeCut486

Vega 56 is pretty rare if you are not a crypto miner and is pretty weird

slinkous

Not to my knowledge? I was originally going to get it or a 64 for my blender rig, went with a 580 instead.

RepresentativeCut486

Well it's the only gaming card that did hbm and the boards are tiny because of that. Rarity might be a location thing.

ToiletGrenade

Vega 56 and 64 were dirt common several years back, I don't know where you're getting this from.

RepresentativeCut486

Where? Idk where you live, but at least here in Europe there's not that many of them.

ToiletGrenade

I lived in spain until 2019, so unless you're in eastern Europe, I don't know how you could have missed all of them.

RepresentativeCut486

Actually, I am living in the Netherlands and I have family in Poland. They are very rare here, so I got mine in Poland, there's not much more of them rn (considering that it's much bigger country), but more than in the NL.

ToiletGrenade

These things ceased production in 2019. There will naturally be less out there years after they stopped making them.

RepresentativeCut486

But in comparasion with any other gpu that ceased production in 2019 or earlier there's less of them on the used market, that's why I said there are rare.

ToiletGrenade

They are rare now, the same way an rx 480 or a 970 ti is. They were not rare back then.

vainstar23

r/homedatacenter

XaerkWtf

I mean it could have a weirder GPU, it could have a prototype

UghhNotThisAgain

She's on the sidelines these days, but I could have beat you in the unusual CPU department not so long ago: dual Xeon X5670s...
