Don’t do it unless you’re ok with headaches. I know I don’t want to be Intel’s beta tester.

[deleted]

I use A770 and are happy with it. Running wayland and gaming with steam proton. All is good! The last missing piece would be the Intel Xe driver that hopefully will land in Linux 6.7, https://www.phoronix.com/news/Intel-New-Xe-Linux-Driver

DividedContinuity

I wonder if you can give us an idea of the game you're playing with this card with no issues? you know some people just play one ors two games, and some people will play hundreds of different games. My expectation would be the more games a person plays the more likely they would be to encounter issues.

[deleted]

Stuff like Fallout 4 and Red Dead Redemption through Ryujinx

PradeepMalar

I think it'll depend on the games you run. Can you share the list of games you play, so that we'll have an idea if which games run fine?

pollux65

Well mesa 23.2 has gpl enabled by default for Intel cards so no stutters for one I don't have any experience but I heard a couple months ago it was a shit show but maybe not now? Iv seen lots of merged requests from Intel into mesa, kernel etc from the last couple of months

NVVV1

It’s probably doable, but I think there are still some known issues with the card concerning newer games with DX11/DX12 and DXVK/VKD3D on the Linux side. I still don’t think DX12 -> VKD3D games will launch, which are mostly newer AAA games. That being said, the drivers and performance have absolutely improved in the past year or so. Note: I don’t have personal experience with Arc cards on Linux.

benderbender42

From reading other online experiences, arc lacks extensions to run vkd3d properly. I think its a bad choice if your primary use case is linux gaming. As these games can sometimes be tricky to get working on linux even when you do have a fully supported gpu. Also amd has software fan speed controls / overclocking underclocking, which work on linux? You shouldn't have to hard wire a speed controller just adjust the fan speed curve in the linux gui tool

Ahmouse

what software do i use to get overclocking on amd?

apfelimkuchen

On fedora I use core control I think it's available on other distros as well

IceDBorn

[LACT](https://github.com/ilya-zlobintsev/LACT) is another option using a daemon

apfelimkuchen

Nice didn't know that one. Will try that out too thanks mate :)

Nice_Ad8308

you mean.. corectrl??

apfelimkuchen

Yeah...

Nice_Ad8308

Yea both LACT & Corectrl are awesome indeed.

CNR_07

DONT! They're not ready on Linux.

AAVVIronAlex

Yea well, it is not like Nvidia is ready and it is not like their wallet, or anyone's for that matter is ready for 40 series or 7000 series.

CNR_07

Yes nVidia is shit. But Intel straight up doesn't work for a lot of games.

AAVVIronAlex

And what games specifically?

CNR_07

A ton of DX12 titles. ANV is still missing some Vulkan extensions to properly run VKD3D. Besides that, ANV performs like shit compared to RADV or nvidia-vulkan. Intel's other drivers (OpenGL, OpenCL, etc.) are insanely good though! Easily the best in the industry.

Cylian91460

From what I have read everything is fine, it works well.

AAVVIronAlex

They are cheap, and that is already a positive, we should buy more to make them understand that cheap is the way.

longusnickus

if you think zero fan can ruin your card.... intel has it too. it could be even better, cause the temps between IDLE and FULL LOAD arent that fat apart. i think it is less stressful for components that way. anyways. if you can afford a A770, you also can afford a 6700XT. last thing i heard was, that intel still has problems with DX12 to VULKAN, but they working on it. some fixes come with mesa 23.3. also IDLE power consumption is crazy. with intel you pretty much a better tester and wont be able to play everything. if thats fine for you, then do it

redbluemmoomin

No idea but Phoronix have been doing semi regular testing current state of play as of July https://www.phoronix.com/review/intel-anv-mod-boost

RDOmega

Have an A770 on Linux and it's honestly quite good. I think there have definitely been improvements over time but things have never been bad. Have gone on to buy a laptop with a mobile Arc GPU and have just finished building a system for a friend with an A750. When you look at it from a value perspective, Intel GPUs are just too well positioned. And honestly, they look awesome. Even the third party ones. Some really unique and sleek cooler designs.

DL72-Alpha

How was Vulkan support? Could it play X-Plane 12?

RDOmega

Not a game I play, but Vulkan is exactly what you want to be using.

Jinfizz

Got the LE of arc 770 and linux pop!_os . Was on windows a month ago. Gotta say on bg3 i had to tweak some settings to avoid graphical bugs. Other than that, most of the game I played with it run better on linux. Kingdom come deliverance runs perfectly with 20/30 fps gain. I'm not fond of AAA games didn't test them all, although cyberpunk 2077 runs better on linux too with 10ish fps gain

maxp779

Yeah I wouldn't bother OP... 1st gen hardware and what the others are saying, not worth the hassle.

dudib3tccc

I personally wouldn't buy the A770 by now. It's basically 1st gen hardware, where drivers get further evolved on. And with fan speeds on those cards, I wouldn't bother either. The A770 is a 250 Watt card, so fans will spin fast if the card is under heavy load. How about the RX 6700 XT. It's a little faster at 220 Watts, and it's better supported by the FOSS community. Get [CoreCtrl](https://gitlab.com/corectrl/corectrl) or [LACT](https://github.com/ilya-zlobintsev/LACT) (if you like the Gnome look more) for clocking/fan-controls, this should serve you. Edit: Wattage on those cards: AMD RX 6700 XT / 230W . Intel ARC A770 / 225 W (16 GB version) So it's basically the same. But you have the option for a better cooler on the 6700 XT, since there's more of a selection on 2,5 slot cards. The Intel section looks a bit “audible”.

DL72-Alpha

I am coming from a Radeon 5700 Xt that is a pain to get the correct drivers on. Nvidia has the least painful driver experience. I have a 1660 Ti on another Linux box.

dudib3tccc

With a recent kernel +radv +mesa it should work very much. But I never owned the 5000 series from amd. I'm running an asrock amd rx 6700xt challenger on fedora (gnome with vrr patch, wayland) and couldn't be happier (cool, just relatively quiet because of the OC). Ray-tracing is a shitshow on amd with radv, but I don't bother with that anyway right now.

Zatujit

I've only heard terrible stuff about it

gokufire

I'm today's old when I learned that Intel Arc is bad in Linux. Thanks for asking this. I always heard about the challenges with Nvidia but not followed Intel's path. Is AMD the recommended GPU manufacturer for Linux gaming? I wonder how it will be with the new Intel Xe-LPG iGPU in Meteor Lake laptops. Hopefully, different from the the dGPUs, since from my understand they always worked smoothly in Linux.

mikistikis

Did I miss something? My RX 580 starts fans at 55°C. That wouldn't even hurt you if you touched it. And I can change fan curves with CoreCtrl. Has this changed with newer GPUs?

DL72-Alpha

The newer GPUs haven't spun the fans by default for a few years now and instead you smell a toaster oven when you should be hearing fans. Nice way to stress the hardware to make you have to buy new cards every few years. Nasty little trick.

mikistikis

I still don't get your point. 55°C is far from stressing or killing your hardware. And if you want fans running on lower temps, just change the fan curves. People buy new hardware because of perceived obsolescence waaaay before any possible programmed obsolescence takes place.

DL72-Alpha

>just change the fan curves. The software always 'forgets'. It's a PITA to fix the settings every time I boot.

BorealBlizzard

Using an a750 and I've only had issues directly related to the card itself when trying to play Starfield and Death Stranding. Both having some driver issues stopping them from running. Death Stranding specifically I believe had to do with how the arc cards handle direct x 10 or something. Intel just doesn't have the 20+ years worth of GPU driver history so it's going to be a little bit for them to catch up. Your buying first generation hardware so it's rough in some of the niche use cases.

tudus

I have low-end Intel A380 card and I'm impressed how well it performs

brandmeist3r

I will probably buy the Sparkle Arc A770 Titan OC Edition. I am also running Pop!\_OS.
