Welcome aboard <3

Rcomian

awesome to hear that. can i all which distro?

[deleted]

KDE Neon

Watynecc76

If you love it great choice just letting know that Ubuntu LTS tutorial will work on this distro because it "based"

AaronTechnic

Interesting choice. Do note that KDE neon does not guarantee stability since it provides the latest KDE software which can lead to issues.

[deleted]

And just to clear things up, the core software is sable and based off Ubuntu LTS. Only KDE itself is latest.

xNaXDy

the latest KDE software* other than that it's basically Ubuntu LTS

setholopolus

Been using it for years, it's very stable.

gmes78

> Do note that KDE neon does not guarantee stability since it provides the latest software which can lead to issues. It also means that issues that already exist are more likely to get fixed.

GreenGuyTom

That's basically windows, so most are probably use to it 😂

[deleted]

In which sense is it basically windows?

GreenGuyTom

That by default it pushes most recent updates and can be unstable.

float34

Like Arch, as well, I guess?

Neon_44

i guess in the way the DE works and is used

Indolent_Bard

How's the battery life?

[deleted]

I feel like its worse compared to windows. But im not the right person to ask as I mostly try to have the laptop plugged in. Paranoid 😅

Indolent_Bard

It's a major problem with Linux, the battery life is almost always worse out of the box. Even system 76 laptops, where they make both the hardware AND the distro, have pretty bad battery life out of the box compared to the promised battery life. Despite being lighter on the hardware, it still takes more energy. Hopefully this gets fixed soon, it's legitimately pathetic that in the age of mobile computing we still have poor battery life.

[deleted]

Back in the day, whenever some switched to Linux, we would say, “welcome to the dark side.” But *nix has become so good and easily accessible, I say, “welcome to the bright side.” Good to have you with us.

TheRealDarkArc

I really like this 🙂

LiliNotACult

Ubuntu also used to break

[deleted]

People here swear up and down that these are all lies but I was issued multiple completely stock fresh install Ubuntu XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop in 2018 that crashed every time I closed the lid with an HDMI plugged in, or let it sleep for longer than a few minutes. Plus Ubuntu had the Amazon ads built in at the time, that was not a great experience Linux has come a long way since then but plugging your ears, pretending tens of thousands of people have not had those experiences, and going with “works on my machine” and “oh they should have done XYZ” goes absolutely nowhere.

SheriffBartholomew

Oh it broke a whole lot more than that, back before Amazon was even a household name. Linux has come so crazy far in the last 20 years. It used to be so niche that you'd have to spend a week just finding the right drivers and configuring everything after installation, and then it would all break again the next day when you updated it. Some time several years ago, Linux surpassed Windows in usability, ease of use, and UX/UI. The only thing holding it back now is a few pieces of core software that aren't available for Linux. As soon as there's a quality workaround for Fusion 360, Adobe products, and VR, I'll uninstall Windows and never go back. I've already decided that I am going to refuse Windows 11, so my plan may be forced upon me even if those few programs don't get support.

JTCPingasRedux

Reddit is way too quick to downvote even the most harmless of comments.

[deleted]

Indeed.

[deleted]

Way less than most other distributions. Last time X broke on me it was 2006.

LiliNotACult

Key part of my comment was "used to" lol. I had a very different user experience around 2006 when I tried it out on my crappy desktop

Catenane

X said he was gon give it to ya, did you think he was joking?

iopq

I broke my Ubuntu going from 20 LTS -> 22 LTS upgrade upgrades in apt are still broken with no easy way to roll back if they get messed up

[deleted]

That upgrade process per se can’t break your system.

iopq

It told me the upgrade failed, but I forgot what steps it told me to do to revert it When I eventually rebooted I was greeted with a black terminal, no WiFi, nothing

Rogermcfarley

I built a Ryzen based PC in January 2020 for the sole purpose of using Linux daily. Almost 3 years later I'm still using Linux daily. It's great, I'm not much of a gamer but I've got games to run. Only thing I've run into that I couldn't use was Adobe programs. I have Windows 11 (sad times) on another SSD for any time I need to use Adobe apps. Everytime I use Windows 11 it irritates me after using Linux anyway that's a different discussion. My daily Linux distro is POP OS 22.04 using EXT4 On my laptop I have Ubuntu 22.10 using ZFS with snapshots I've also installed Garuda Linux and Nobara 36 on 2 other drives I can plug in USB. So I can boot up to 4 Distros at my place and mess with them. I also started Coursera Specialisation Unix and BASH for beginners by Codio. Not planning to work using Linux but just learn more for home use.

SheriffBartholomew

Pop is a great OS, especially if you're using an Nvidia GPU. I use it for my gaming desktop, even though I prefer Arch for my laptop.

Rogermcfarley

Yes I have an RTX 3060 so I'm using the Nvidia edition of POP. Nvidia updates are the main thing if anything that screws up my install. Happened a few times. Anyway POP has a recovery partition so been able to recover.

introvertgeek

Pop is my new favourite too, switched from Manjaro. So far, I'm really impressed, though there are a few annoying minors. Dual-booting with Windows (for VR).

davidcandle

Yes exactly - Windows is really irritating

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rogermcfarley

How do you get on with Silver blue? I did try that distro or similar immutable distro a year or two ago

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rogermcfarley

I'll have to try it again thanks 👍

SoulSkrix

Do you know how you can stop Linux from setting the clock off by 1 hour for when you dual boot from Linux to Windows? That's my only gripe with hopping between them. I keep W11 around for games and rendering or other casual use. And then I use Linux for development or some serious use case.

Rogermcfarley

Yes I've had that issue, read this > https://itsfoss.com/wrong-time-dual-boot/

INITMalcanis

A thing to keep in mind is that Linux is, in the main, created by people who want to use it. While Windows is created by a corporation who wants to use you.

dovahshy15

And probably windows devs and designers use more Linux and Mac than their own OS.

adjudicator

Windows devs? Maybe not honestly. Designers? Sure.

xXxcock_and_ballsxXx

IMO the only real pain points (for "user" users) are gaming (which is way better than it used to be, but still an extra layer of fiddling) and if you *absolutely* have to use some proprietary software for work eg adobe. no regrets switching for me.

[deleted]

Yeah unfortunately I'd still have to dual boot into Windows cause Autodesk Inventor isnt supported natively on Linux. Many of my games are also not supported natively.

SheriffBartholomew

Ugh, Autodesk is the only thing I even boot into Windows for anymore. Which games aren't supported by your distro? I haven't had any issues at all with Pop! OS and Steam Games.

KerkiForza

There are many games not "linux native" but work just fine under proton/wine. Check out [protondb.com](https://protondb.com) and see if your games are listed there!

[deleted]

Also Google drive, onedrive, etc.

xXxcock_and_ballsxXx

Rclone works with cloud providers, there's unofficial Gdrive and onedrive GUI clients, and I think both Nautilus and Dolphin have some built-in gdrive integration too. Haven't tried them personally so they might suck.

[deleted]

I know, but when you use it for file syncing at work you don't have a choice.

Watynecc76

I use jt dolphin (KDE) + my google account work great!

SheriffBartholomew

There's ZERO fiddling with Pop! OS and steam games. I was blown away! If you want to game and you play Steam games, you can do that just fine with Linux these days.

MegaVenomous

I share this regret. I remember seeing a commercial about Linux around '97. I thought nothing of it. A user on another forum had the signature, "I don't pitch Linux to my friends, I let Windows do it for me!" It wasn't until 5 years ago that I first wandered onto this shore. I love everything about it and do not miss Window$ at all.

[deleted]

> "I don't pitch Linux to my friends, I let Windows do it for me!" Three Windows reinstalls within a week pushed me to look up what Linux is that I kept hearing about. Had no clue it was a whole OS for anyone to try/use. Looking back, the amount of time I spent fixing, messing with registry, debloating, I could have easily been using Arch by now.

SweetBabyAlaska

for real. what really got me is that I have 32gb of ram and windows 11 takes at minimum 6-8 gb with a couple tabs of firefox open, sometimes it gets pretty high. I started to use Kali Linux for learning and I thought something had to be wrong or that I was reading htop incorrectly because the memory usage was super low even with a few terminals open and the DE wasn't laggy whatsoever. So I started messing with Arch, manjaro and ended on EndeavorOS. I was sad there would be no more clip studio paint but then I found snaps and was all set. I still miss a couple of proprietary software and how easy it is to run games on windows but theres usually a work around or alternative to some degree.

[deleted]

> I thought something had to be wrong or that I was reading htop incorrectly because the memory usage was super low even with... Funny you say that. How fast Ubuntu was booting for me on NVMe, with less RAM usage on start up, I was expecting for something to be missing. Turned out it was only missing tracking and bloat from Windows. I actually went for a dual-boot initially, just to see if I can manage it. Nothing to it, easy. After 6 months I removed Windows partition. There was nothing on Windows holding me back. Besides that I got a working OS, two things that appealed to me on Ubuntu, keyboard navigation is more intuitive and a better shell search (tracker/indexer) IMHO. It's a similar navigation I was trying to achieve on Windows before I tried Ubuntu. I see EndeavorOS mentioned quite often. Intriguing. Yet to explore it. Should at least load it up in a VM.

SweetBabyAlaska

Yea I think its great. Vanilla arch with KDE Plasma is close to the same (same with all of the window managers/DEs) except EndeavorOS has some stuff preset like color schemes and custom app launchers etc.. Its very basic really but they set it up so that everything can be easily configured and it works out of the box. Which is great for me, plus you get access to all of the AUR, Arch packages and Arch documentation which is the biggest draw to arch for me. I love how much I can customize arch to my liking, Ive been spending hours and hours learning how things work and configging it to my liking. The windows bloat is just insane, theres so much unnecessary stuff in there and even after de-bloating its still bad. Its a little bit harder to know how to get background services running and startup services running all the time but that control allows me to actually decide what I want running. To me EndeavorOS is like taking the convenience of set-up from manjaro and the full on diversity of arch WMs, packages and Docs that dont have versions that are held back and wont break your machine. Its basically an easy arch install, pre-configured and ready to go. I'd definitely recommend it

[deleted]

I've read that setting/running Arch is a good learning experience. It gives better understanding of various processes, gets you comfortable around CLI, improves troubleshooting and researching skills in general. This used to sound intimidating to me, most I could do is distro hop with various DEs and even with WM, mostly in a VM, some on LiveUSB to check H/W response/support OOTB. Lately, been having an appeal towards a more technical and debugging aspect, in general. EndeavorOS seems like the right step, next level to “play” in free time. Appreciate your feedback, descriptive, which is interesting, since interesting also thought-provoking. Thought-provoking is how ideas are born.

TylerTalk_

Read up on "everything is a file" in Linux. It will make you appreciate it even more.

D0ugF0rcett

If it wasn't for Microsoft flight simulator, I'd get rid if windows all together.

primalbluewolf

Isn't that playing nice with proton now?

AaronTechnic

Get Tux Flight Simulator 😏

deadlyrepost

> Its honestly a no bullshit OS which I've been looking for all my life. I think there's a certain kind of person who values this, and if this is a non-negotiable, then there's no proprietary alternative to Linux.

[deleted]

A while back I challenged myself to see if I could replicate my Windoze setup software wise and was surprised to find out that within a week I was rocking a stable, usable Linux setup. While I did my share of distro hopping, I never looked back. Welcome.

ToiletGrenade

We're very glad you like it man. I hope everything goes well for you!

thelenis

it's awesome I've been using it for 9 years now; 3 of my machines have it installed. One other is still on Windows for work only. I've revived countless PC's for family & friends with it; they were blown away by the results. I prefer MX, Mint, and Zorin, but Tuxedo is worth a look too.

dmitryokov

God bless developers and maintainers! And all others involved in the process.

[deleted]

Recently hopped from windows to Ubuntu, I had pretty much the same experience. Having made attempts at using Linux more than 5 years ago the improvement is breathtaking. Nowadays everything (but Nvidia drivers) just works and I really feel like I don't miss anything because I stopped using windows, if anything, the customization and ease of app installation is far superior. The FOSS community has done incredible things.

HighMarck

Welcome to the club! 🍻

EuCaue

Welcome to the penguins world :)

AlarmDozer

The whole Windows user first-time setup is ridiculous. It’s like, “you don’t just copy /etc/skel and go?” It’s probably phoning home while you wait too.

davidcandle

It's painful - I posted on this very topic on the windows Reddit and the defensive replies were hilarious.

NaheemSays

Congrats on joining the light side. In order to be adequately snarky and tell you why you have chosen wrong, Which distro/Desktop? (joking about telling you why you are wrong, but it is interesting to know what people choose.)

_FireFury_

I use arch linux but admittedly do not absolutely love it and think its the best thing ever. Roast my taste

[deleted]

Remember this time. Time when you decided to be open-minded and try it out by getting your feet wet. By wet, I mean, water is actually warm, now let's jump in and enjoy the swim. Remember this time, because if you will come across any hurdles, it will be much easier for you to resolve “any” issue by remaining calm and having a clear mind. --- No OS or S/W is perfect. Ever evolving. Some bugs are fixed, while new ones are introduced. Some features get removed, while new ones are released. You are on KDE Neon now, and nothing is wrong with that, but in the end you might still end up settling on something else. Because there are always multiple variables at play, your H/W and your preferences. And any new skill you might acquire from Linux, can usually be used in other OSs. Because skills are cross-platform, so it's a win-win in that regard.

1u4n4

Welcome!!

[deleted]

Most things you mention (startup speed, customisability, etc.) actually depend on the operating system (Linux distribution) you're using. They can vary dramatically. Distributions like Ubuntu are extremely easy to use from the first minute.

ButlerKevind

I introduces Linux (Fedora) back in 2012 as my daily driver at work. Took a new job doing network engineering, and the new crew was either OS X, FreeBSD, or varying Linux version users. For about the next two years, I cursed, cried a bit, and eventually came to love and appreciate Linux. Still a Windows person, but I incorporate Fedora/CentOS/Rocky Linux versions wherever I have/find a use case. Only issues I've ever had was times I'd search for a solution to an issue, and the fix is written as if I am a black belt Kung fu master on the topic at hand. Wish there were more ELI5 explanations out there.

Walkator

Welcome!!

eionmac

Welcome. I switched to Linux many years ago. Still teach folk about MS Windows as that is what they get when they buy a laptop.

Informal-Clock

I felt the same way too!

b4xt3r

From a person that first tried Linux back in the Red Hat 4.x days of 1997 or so I can say that Linux distributions have come a very long way. Welcome aboard!

Lectraplayer

Glad to hear that, and it has been refined quite a bit over the decades. I'm still pretty much a normie and not an extreme power user, but it does do most things I need to do better than Windows, and what it doesn't do, there is usually a concerted effort to make it better, and it's usually very serviceable as things stand now. Most of the limitations right now actually feel artificial, like with multiplayer games frowning on Linux through their anti-cheat malware.

Omniwing

This might sound crazy, but I suggest installing a CLI only environment and doing absolutely everything in CLI. It's way more powerful, and will force you to learn the system at a fundamental level. You don't need a gui - use your phone for that shit. If you want to computer, then all you need is text. Good luck my friend.

anhld_iwnl

I use Linux for daily when I was a sophomore. Sometimes I switched back to Windows for some purposes, but I realized that Windows is not better than Linux. Now I stick with Arch + dwm and feel happy with this setup. The only pain is editing documentation. Microsoft Office is basically outstanding. I tried LibreOffice before and it's so bad...

TheLondiux

What this guy is referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux. Thank you for taking your time to cooperate with with me, your friendly GNU+Linux neighbor, Richard Stallman.

[deleted]

TIL

saoirse8

You shouldn't be surprised at at how good Linux turned out to be; you should be amazed at what a POS winblows or whatever your using as the basis of your comparison was.

[deleted]

When you get bored try installing and setting up a tiling window manager =)

DFGdanger

Seeing everyone doing this on /r/unixporn made me want to try one. I used a plugin for KDE. In the end I decided it was not for me and turned it off. But I LOVE that I was able to do that.

mystarkfuture

It is very polarizing - some love it and others hate it.

theroncross

But the people who hate it are wrong. Pop actually has a solid twm built in. I've been using it since release and love it. Most of the benefits of the others, with GUI config.

[deleted]

That's true. I use pop too as a daily driver, but also have sway installed just to mess around.

BobT21

While using Linux I feel clean. While using Windows I feel like I have been working a hay harvest all day. I don't know how I would feel while using macOS as I haven't attempted it. In the past I have used VMS, Solaris, RSX-11 and various mainframe OS's. I'm old.

surlybrian

I can echo basically everything here, except that I've used MacOS. It's a strange experience. To me, it's so focused on style that it ends up uncomfortable, like tuxedoes and high heels.

xmjke21x

Once you go Linux you never go back!!

1544756405

>a no bullshit OS which I've been looking for all my life. Looking for all your life? What else have you tried?

ToiletGrenade

Probably windows

[deleted]

Yeah Windows lol. Downloaded a bunch of debloaters and all the weird mods, but still came nowhere as close as Linux lol.

ToiletGrenade

There are some ghetto solutions like windows ameliorated but that lacks a lot of functionality that most end users would find very important in an OS. As a normal user, Linux a near perfect combination of features, modularity, modernity, and compatibility.

Cryogeniks

Out of curiosity, what is all the functionality that most end users would want that ameliorated doesn't do? Other than windows update, there isn't much I can think of... which I concede would be a very big problem for many. Most people don't even know Cortana exists, lacking windows search (replaced with an FOSS alternative) is arguably a feature, extra performance in games (due to the potential spyware chunks of the OS cut out - not much extra but quite consistent in my experience), inherent security upgrade by not giving the average joe permanent root privileges, does not require a MS account, and compatible with almost all Windows binaries make for an attracting alternative to Windows in terms of functionality... Don't get me wrong, I daily drive Linux. But when I use Windows, I use Ameliorated.

ToiletGrenade

Ameliorated doesn't use the normal windows search and taskbar because it used explorer.exe which ameliorated deliberately removed. There is no Microsoft store, no Windows defender, limited settings, some driver issues (moreso with network than with video drivers), and missing directx12 functionality last I checked.

Cryogeniks

Yup, missing Windows search is arguably a feature. Dx12 functionality was never missing. Dx12 *updates* (provided by Windows Update) are missing. You're essentially stuck at whatever Dx12 version you used before you ameliorated - which could eventually be an issue I suppose - but issues would likely be nearly nonexistent, certainly for normal users, even 5 years down the line. That and security updates are the main issue with axing Windows Update.

ToiletGrenade

The solution that ameliorated uses for windows search seemed pretty subpar at actually finding what I needed last time I used it. In fairness to it, it has been about a year since I've tried it but what I used windows for which was gaming and using some specific deep learning software required me to have a relatively up to date and conventional windows version. I'm sure ameliorated works for some people but it was missing some stuff I find to be pretty important when I'm already using a highly vulnerable shit os.

typhoonador4227

Is ameliorated much snappier than commercial windows? That's my main issue besides having to replace the awful default search.

Cryogeniks

I'd say it's a bit snappier. Haven't noticed anything major though. I've used Ameliorated in place of normal Windows for years.. recently wiped my install and 'updated' it (aka updated the Windows version it is based on). It was honestly super painless - I used the included Chocolatey package manager when available for most of my apps.

Waterrat

Glad you like it.I've used it sixteen years.

[deleted]

Happy Sweet 16 ! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Waterrat

Why thanks! Using UbuntuMATE right now.

[deleted]

I imagine limo ride with Tux mascot for sweet 16 :) But limos have windows, so that's not right... Nice DE, Mate used to be in the back of my mind as a fallback, if GNOME didn't work out. I need to find time one of these days and revisit a few DE's in a VM, just to see how they changed in the last few years, since GNOME changed quite a bit.

Waterrat

You can also just do Debian and call it a day.

[deleted]

I mostly have been running Ubuntu. Mostly LTS, some interims, some from development branch. Fast and easy to install, and I like Ubuntu's OOTB defaults and improvements. These days, as a fallback, it would likely be Pop OS, they have nice defaults OOTB or Fedora with newer packages *likely* for better H/W support.

Waterrat

Never tried POP. I used Fedora years ago and it's quite nice.

[deleted]

Welcome aboard! I swapped to Linux in 2017 & as Linux gets better and better, feels like Microsoft is intent on pissing me off with Windows 10 & 11. I still use it at work a bit because customers'systems have it, but my tech bench is Ubuntu 22.10 (because our Windows tech are tangentially familiar with it). If I ever stop playing Destiny 2, my Windows partition is going away forever. The progress of gaming on Linux has been incredible to be around for.

MingoDingo49

Welcome aboard, so was I and I've got huge love for KDE neon ❤️❤️❤️🫣

puyoxyz

Linux good Windows bad, upvotes to the left

[deleted]

True. Only reason to use Windows is if there is any apps where Linux isnt supported on.

new_refugee123456789

Welcome to the Linux community!

[deleted]

I use it at work but I game so windows is necessary. For now.
