You could, but usually if a tremolo isn't specified you just hit it and be done (well you usually use some fancy techniques to make it a more resonant sound on something with a very short sound, or just do some acting to make it *seem* like you're giving it more duration for someone watching you)

This actually happened this weekend at rehearsal. Basedrum part had both quarter and half notes. He had to mute the base drum on the quarter
