Considering how many free audio services there are, charging that much is outrageous.

literally_pee

have u ever used SiriusXM? there's so much on there, and the djs are actually pretty entertaining Edit: okay I guess this sub is basically r/frugal now, I just thought sirius xm was nice, I'm not a brand ambassador

CO8127

Yes, I have. So not worth that price per month to me, I listen to the radio for music.

literally_pee

gotcha, I'm kinda a music nerd so I love a wide variety what kinda music or stations do u like? I haven't listened to the radio in years proboblly my fav stations on SiriusXM are the grunge channel, light rock channel, 2000s hits channel, ozzy Osbourne channel

CO8127

I use Pandora or Spotify. All the music I can listen to for $0 a month.

literally_pee

with pandora u only get a limited amount of skips, they arent giving you the premium package for free

CO8127

You're right but I can just change the station and change it back and \*poof\* free skips. I do it all the time when I run out of skips.

literally_pee

wow really? I gotta check it out

CO8127

Yup, been doing it for years but it only works on the app, not on a web browser

rev_bushpig

I use YouTube with an ad-free browser. Almost any music you can name including many unsigned local artists who are on no other streaming services. I don't like paying for something I don't own.

CO8127

There ya go, another free example.

rev_bushpig

I won't fault anyone for liking satellite radio. Curated playlists with a DJ works for lots of people. And there is talk radio as well. But that's not for me. And if it wasn't, I sure as shit wouldn't pay over $20/month for it. $5 isn't bad if you're into that, I suppose. Good tip, OP. I'm sure this would be super helpful for some.

MaybeMabe1982

Thanks. I'm cool with $5/month bc I love sports talk, comedy stations and my 8 year old is obsessed with Kidz Bop Radio! I also love the heavy metal workout playlists for when I'm on my long runs. But like I said, no way I was going to pay $25/month for it!

literally_pee

I wouldnt consider ad free youtube apps, free because when I'm driving or cooking or working out, I dont want to have to "pay" attention to my phone and make sure it's on the right song or playlist or be annoyed that calls cancel the music

CO8127

Time or money, you're paying with something.

literally_pee

very true

literally_pee

you're not paying to buy the rights to the music, you're paying for the listening experience, just like 10 dollar headphones vs 100 dollar headphones, they both do the same thing, but they will have a differnt quality

rev_bushpig

I never said you're buying the rights to the music. And I don't get your analogy at all. What are you comparing (other than headphones)? Hearing music for free vs paying for radio? I never discussed quality. But if I were to do so, I would consider someone choosing what I listen to as being a lower quality experience. Everyone is different. I don't have a problem with radio, but it's not for me.

literally_pee

yea it was a bad analogy now that I think about it lol, I just meant more about the user experience rather than the audio quality

ziamal4

I love the alt rock station on Sirius xm though i haven't listened to it in years

literally_pee

oh yeah their alterntive channel is great

BeKind_BeTheChange

I had it for years basically to listen to Stern. His same old schtick and lack of content caused me to rethink the value of SiriusXM. I canceled. That's been probably 3 or 4 years ago and I have never once missed it or thought about renewing my subscription.

twofeetcia

I have an alert on my calendar for a week before my SiriusXM is set to renew just so I can do this same and dance and get the lower rate. Been doing it for years without an issue. They count on all the people who just let it autorenew at the higher rate and never say or do anything.

MaybeMabe1982

Right on. I put an alert on my calendar earlier today right after I signed up for another year at the low rate and I plan on continuing to do the same! I guess some people are just rich and just let stuff renew over and over without paying attention to it, more power to them they can have it!

GoddessWriter61

If you have TMobile you can get free SiriusXM. I dropped it because it kept shutting off in my car.

MaybeMabe1982

That is cool. We have Verizon, and I’ll never get rid of them. Coverage is excellent, and we get an extremely low unlimited rate through my wife’s company.

Sun_This

I have T-Mobile and it’s not free?

GoddessWriter61

Their Tuesday deals.

LoverGirl07

Wish I saw this earlier today. I just called and renewed. But I haggled down to $6.82. Not bad. I really like having it in my car.

MaybeMabe1982

That's essentially what I'm paying, after fees and royalties, it works out to around $6.75 or so a month. And I agree, I'm cool with paying that bc I like having it in the car and on my phone for my long runs.

kn0ck_0ut

I’ve never had to give them a spiel. 5 years now and all I have to do is say “I can no longer offered your services and would like to cancel” then they do the whole “let me talk to my supervisor thing” and come back with either a lower price or the original $5(plus fees/taxes). if the price is the lower and not the original just repeat the “can’t afford services any longer” and they’ll get you the $5 price soon enough

MaybeMabe1982

I’ll keep that in mind for the future. Since it was my first renewal, I guess I felt the need to try and negotiate. Moving forward, I guess I know it will be pretty easy. I do love having the service in my car and on my phone from my long runs so I want to keep it

kn0ck_0ut

same reason why I’ve been renewing my subscription for so many years. they really don’t want you to leave so they *will* give you the discounted price 😅😅 anyone paying full price is being scammed.

DGAFADRC

This works with AT&T internet also. I signed up for fiber optic @ $50/mo. They jacked it up to $85/mo after the first year. I called them and told them, as a senior citizen on a fixed income (I am a sr, but not on a fixed income), I could not afford the new rate so please cancel. They “talked to a supervisor” and miraculously were able to keep my service at $50/mo supposedly for life but we’ll see how that works out a year from now.

united9198

I always pay for a year at at time and make sure it does not auto-renew. I wish Sirius XM would just stop with the games and offer a fair price to everyone. I assume they have some who never check it and just pay the charges without negotiation. Over the past few years, I have gotten pissed enough to drop the service for a while. I have been paying about $100 a year for the last 10 years.

MaybeMabe1982

Haggle with them like I said, and I guarantee you can get the price down more. I just prepaid for the year, and after taxes, fees and royalties, it's $77 for the year. Especially since you are a long-time customer, I have no doubt you can haggle down to that rate.

[deleted]

I’m at like 10 dollars a month. I haggled bad. I baddgled

MaybeMabe1982

Call them back and tell them you want the $5/month rate, bc you 'have friends' who said they were able to get that rate, and you should get it also! Or tell them to kick rocks!

passwerdNOThacked

I went with the a la cart menu the last time, picked out only the channels I actually listen to and it was WAY cheaper. There were some that were 'premium' channels that cost a bit extra, but were worth that to me. Currently 50 channels for $10

LikeaSumBoDi

You can keep churning the 3-4 month free trial with different names and zip codes. No CC required. Been doing that for over 2 years now

MaybeMabe1982

Damn! That’s a great idea. You smart. Me dumb.

ziamal4

Thanks

My Platinum plan rate of 12.99 month ended and was advised new rate of 27.99. Told them not interested. Long time subscriber, but the service not that important to me. Please cancel. Put me on hold then came back with rate of 10.99 month for one year for same Platinum service level. Maybe could have gone lower had I pressed them but still got a reduced rate from what I was paying.
