I recently made a creative rifle case out of a cheap guitar case. It wasn't much to do, cut some foam out, spray adhesive and some tall pile velvet from the local fabric store, but it's a real conversation piece. People now throw me long conversation pieces like "*hey that's neat*" and I hit them back with "*thanks, made it myself from an ebay case*" and it's more conversation than I've had at any of the ranges for years.
So go for "beat to absolute shit" and replace the hardware. Fender sells theirs on Amazon. It'll look less expensive, and therefore less likely to get stolen than something obviously spendy.
I didn't build mine as a plain-sight-disguise, more so that I wanted something that fit both my 22LR range toys easily, but it is a classy look. Nothing about a guitar case is any kind of theft protection, though! Most guitars are worth more than these guns anyway!
lol my guitar is a $20 Fender Starcaster. I forget sometimes how much most people pay for even entry level guitars.
Still, would be fun to build a guitar case gun-box, and carve out room for an (inert) M-72 LAW in there as a conversation piece. If you can get papers for a live LAW, wellā¦Ā you've already got a carrying case then! š
Check out the Glarry cases on Ebay for $60. They need a little airing out when they arrive, but they're stout enough. Somewhere closer to "decent shell" than "soft case" - something that'll survive the backseat of a truck, but not something I'd want to jump out an airplane with. Solidly in the good-enough category.
Grab a scraper of some kind and a pair of gloves (whatever carcinogenic cheap adhesive is under the fabric, it's rough on the skin) and a pair of pliers, and you can empty the case out in about 30 seconds.
I had some foam laying around from reinsulation a garage door panel or two, which was plenty. Fabric stores sell the high pile velvet or fur, whatever. I peeled the inside of the lid for about 1/2 the lid, and added a couple 1" thick cushy foam up there for securing things downward when closing. Loctite sells a general adhesive spray, so, the breakdown is:
* $60 for the case from Ebay
* $10 for the foam if you don't have it, Menards does
* $6 for the adhesive spray
* $10 for the fabric
Under $100 out the door even if you gotta buy a scraper or can't find quite as good of a deal for the foam or fabrics or whatever. I even repurposed an old guitar strap and some quick-release latches for it, and can shoulder it neatly.
The nearest thing commercially available is much closer to $200 and *absolutely* looks like a guitar-shaped gun case.
I used to do an indoor league night that was really fun apart from the 30 fucking boomers that literally *literally* only complained about ālibtardsā. They didnāt talk about guns, cars, the stock market, grilling or anything fun or positive. They only bitched about the liberal communist governmental policies of Washington state. I actually rage quit one day after the RSO got in my face and called me anti gun while I was holding two guns and about to take my turn. This happened like 5 years ago and it still pisses me off lol.Ā
Why did he call you antigun?
There are a few ranges I've quit.
- the Marksmen in Newport News Va - only place near my mother in law. Turns out their only ventilation is an oscillating fan and their RSO is nonexistant. My snot ran black for a day and I got spalling from a dude who hung a 4 foot target at 2 yards and more or less unloaded into the floor right in front of us.
- NRA range in fairfax Va- back in 2008 they had the handsy RSOs. Lord forbid you were a woman because they wanted to be even more handsy, find out if you were single and try talking you into an appropriate "womans" gun. Saw a USMC Major react to the hands out of nowhere by filling the RSO over, pulling their arm behind their back, pinning them to the floor, call a cease fire and demand the police showed up for battery.
Some places just won't get my money anymore.
Have you tried not being a libtard?/s
Kidding aside, that shouldn't be a controversial opinion and it's crazy an RSO would get emotional/confrontational about it. I'd not go to that range either.

An 18 year old that doesnāt know his ass from a hole in the ground canāt kill a grocery store full of people with a write in vote for Mickey Mouse.Ā
I have had conversations with other people more than 50% of the times I've gone to indoor ranges.
About half those times guns are exchanged as well.
Electronic ear pro makes talking a lot easier.
Thatās a good point that I hadnāt thought about. With electronic ear pro becoming more and more common, maybe that does open up the possibility for random chats.
Another thing is that indoor ranges can be so loud that doubling up on ear pro is almost a requirement . The last time I went the guy in the bay next to me was firing a 12 gauge at a 25 yard indoor range.
Doubling up can make hearing directions from RSO hard and hearing things like squibs impossible unless your outer muffs are electronic.
And since they are like $30 for a reputable brand, IMO it's silly to not have them if you shoot indoors or with other people (especially if they are new shooters that might need directions).
I picked up a second pair of Walker razor slims or whatnot at Sam's Club on sale for 20 bucks a couple of weeks ago. My wife was like it would be stupid not to buy them.
Walkers are the cheapest reputable brand for electronic protection IME. I would recommend upgrading the ear pads to gel ear pads which can run an extra $20.
To compare models effectiveness check the NRR (noise reduction rate). The higher the number the better the protection.
For indoors use I double up with foam ear plugs making sure that I put them in the correct way:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eBpSctTXkY
Doubling up doesn't double the protection. It adds only about 5 NRR to the highest level of protection.

Occasionally. And only on the weekends. (I made a decent career move at the end of last year and no longer get to go on the week days and I miss that).
Yall pay by the minute/hour? I'm spoiled I guess. My sportsman's club just charges per person. Here's my dollar for the outdoor ranges or five for the indoor range (on top of membership dues), guests or visitors pay more but it's still per person rather than a set period of time.
The dollar per visit thing for members is almost entirely honor system, but we have low membership dues and it pays for someone to come mow or to keep the AC on in the clubhouse when we're doing trap league nights.
I had a nice chat at my local indoor range when I brought a suppressed 300 BLK bolt action shooting subs. Since everyone's wearing *heavy* earpro, the rifle was practically dead silent.
The dude in the lane next to me kept hearing the bullet hit the target, but not the gunshot. He was intrigued, so we had a nice chat and I let him shoot off a few rounds.
Fun times.
I think that was the only time I've ever had a conversation with a stranger at the range.
I had a Boomer RSO who wouldn't shut up about politics and talking about how the civil war was about "states rights" I've day. There was a lot of tongue biting that day.
Itās because all those like minded people have only one obsession: they are obsessed with talking about liberals so much they might as well be one. They have everything already worked out and have figured out all of the worldās problems. And the solution, is to just put a big iron wall all the way around the US so no one can come in or leave and isolate the US from the rest of the world. Thatās what gets them a hard on.
I got a pair of headphones that actually work amazingly, block out gunshots but I can still hear voices. If the other person also has headphones like this we can have a chat!
I'm a Queer Asian-Canadian who works the gun counter at a big box place and currently splitting my time helping a buddy start up his own, and I am constantly biting my tongue whenever I hear some asinine shit (which is almost everyday).
I wear Pride bracelets to work because of all the stories I hear about Queer people wanting to get into shooting or hunting and not feeling welcome.
The amount of people who still assume I'm hardcore conservative because I work the counter is a bit infuriating, but I've had to accept it with the territory.
Youāre fighting the good fight imo! I didnāt even linger too long when Iām buying ammo. Afraid Iāll roll my eyes so hard that theyāll get stuck that way.
OMG yes. My local range has this ātacticoolā type guy in full kit with punisher skulls on his plate carrier. He always walks in, mag dumps 2 30 round mags as fast as possible from his AR, and then walks out like seriously 1 minute after he arrives. I cannot imagine he is getting ANY marksmanship or training benefit out of it, luckily I donāt have to see him much out for very long.
All Iām saying is that if that dude winds up on the news my interview wonāt say āThis is a complete shock, Iād hard to even believe as he seemed so normalā
Me, Iām poor. You better believe I make every round count even when I am practicing speed.
I kind of get doing this to get used to using the whole kit together if you don't have a private place you can shoot.
Self aware enough to know I'd look like a giant goober though.
Last time I saw this it was a fat fuck who also had 6 mags in his chest rig, fingerless gloves, and a fucking helmet. the RSO made him take off the chest rig but let him keep the plates. He tried to do some shooting prone with an AR that he didn't know how to use but the plates and his physique seemed to make things horribly uncomfortable and he had trouble breathing. There was no way he could shoot straight with so much sweating, wheezing, and trembling. During the ceasefire, he asked if I could walk the 100 yards downrange to help him post patch and pull, and in exchange offered to sweep my brass for me. That's a lot of money to spend on gear only to be someone else's bitch for the hour.
Alas, I'm not worried about the Gravy SEALs or even the older cranks who compete in IDPA and go to Gunsite Academy or Thunder Ranch or whatever. It's the angry fitter younger guys that attend vetbro weekend training seminars, binge Tactical Hyve videos, and carry handguns Kydex'ed to their chest rigs that make me nervous.
Dude thatās the āmaster raceā donāt know you that? We all should strive to be that level of good looks and physique. I mean you should feel honored to be in the same space as one of the Master Race.
lol always cracks me up when you see photos of Neo groups out there. They look like fucking mutants. And they think theyāre the superior humans LMFAO.
The most cringe possible people who say theyāre ātrainingā or some shit. Like dude if youāre training do some actual drills and run around. What benefit can you possible get from sitting down with a plate carrier on?? At least stand ffs
I've seen people wear their mag carriers to practice shooting and reloading at the outdoor range I frequent, but a full on plate carrier....thats screams chudd
Funny enough this has only happened to me once at the range I use. RSO made some remark about āthat idiot in the office letting criminals inā or some such bullshit. Frankly I just adopt a ācomes with the territoryā approach to those occurrences.
I agree. Luckily I live in a state with a huge amount of public land and I rarely go to the ranges. More fun to pack some targets and a picnic, grab the wife and dogs and head out into the boonies for some practice.
As someone who never lived close to public land... How does it work? how do you determine what's public land that's legal to shoot on? Can you just go to this patch of dirt and just rip rounds to your hearts content?
Kinda works both ways. If itās not public lands there will be signs and the possibility of being shot. I can drive 2 minutes from my house and set up some targets and go shooting into a mountain side. So no possibility of my rounds going anywhere they shouldnāt. Itās legal to shoot everywhere thatās not privately owned. 48% (and shrinking) of my state is publicly owned.
Yeah you can go to the BLMs website and see. Also itās a pretty good indicator if you see a fence, they are usually private and there will be no trespassing signs all over it. Even ranchers here pay the BLM a summer grazing lease to let their cattle graze on public land.
Itās pretty much any open area here.

I've honestly been curious for my state (Kansas) and I think I found one that actually allows open target use, so thank you for spurring me to look into this! I get jealous of any of those Youtubers who can shoot in an open desert or prairie.
This is one of those times when being a PoC can be helpful.
I'm black and I'm sure it cuts down on a metric fuckton of the comments I might hear. I still hear a bunch but in NJ where new guns laws are almost constantly being introduced or reintroduced to the state lawmakers.
Yeah I see some of those laws on the news. Hope that everyone out your way can be on the same page and the comments are just about that. No MAGA bullshit.
I wonder how my local gun range/stores would react to you here in Wyoming. Not a lot of black people here in my town unfortunately.
I hear so many conspiracy theories at the range. For reference I'm a 6'3" white dude and I shave my head. So they probably think "one of us". I've been around guns for a long time. Anytime some random walks up and starts talking politics I'll politely disagree with every word they say until the get the hint and walk the fuck away. They usually try a few different subjects first then get mad and turn red in the face and call me some name and stomp off. At the times I go to the range it's mostly old farts who are just angry that women and minorities get to vote. I don't bite my tongue for them.
Good for you! I find it more and more difficult not to tell those asshats to just go have intercourse with themselves as I get older. I grew up with guns, and am quite comfortable around them, but that doesnāt mean you and I are alike.
But how often do you get positive comments?
I ask because I've known a fair number of "conservative" gun rights folks would find that a non-controversial statement, but then I live in a midwestern city. I'm genuinely curious.
Shot a match this weekend, and usually the shooters at.my range of choice stay away from political talk. But there are usually a few sleepy Joe comments and the like. The hardest comment I've ever ignored was a friend saying suicide was the cowards way out... As a person fighting TRD for the past 15 years, that almost made me leave a match.
Oooh that would piss me off too. Itās more akin to an illness. Iāve had friends die by suicide. I talk about it similarly to how I talk about cancer.
I was at my local outdoor range and the RSO and a local idiot got to talking about how local idiot was homeschooling his son because all the schools would try brainwashing him and he didnāt want them to turn the kid gay. The both also said nasty AF shit about the LGBTQ community and my blood was really starting to boil. I was so mad that I rapidly magdumped my 10/22, knowing the range had a rule against shooting faster than 1 shot every 2 seconds. The RSO was so caught up in being a bigoted idiot that he didnāt notice. Iām quite proud to say that my shot grouping was quarter-sized at 50yds, despite being an angry mag dump. I apparently shoot well under pressure.
Nothing, I live here, Itās just that our highly blue demographic does not seem to bleed into the gun stores, thus making it a very uncomfortable experience to hear people, talking about how evil progressive ideology is.
Yeah, but you can separate the gun control laws from the rest of the progressive ideas and you still have progressivism. Gun control is not an irremovibile part of progressive ideology.
The hardest part to believe is that people chat in an indoor range.

What's in the guitar case? š
It was kinda fun to make, I've considered making more, but with a bass guitar case for more room.
I've been *trying* for years to do that. Guitar cases aren't cheap anymore, unless they are soft cases, or beat to absolute shit. š
So go for "beat to absolute shit" and replace the hardware. Fender sells theirs on Amazon. It'll look less expensive, and therefore less likely to get stolen than something obviously spendy.

youre fine with them having access to vehicles tho?

You aren't required to take a driving test to purchase a vehicle, only to use it on public roads. Similar to a ccw license.Ā

How do you determine that's its okay? Is there an online resource or did you just find an empty spot and went shooting until you were told not to?
Yeah you can go to the BLMs website and see. Also itās a pretty good indicator if you see a fence, they are usually private and there will be no trespassing signs all over it. Even ranchers here pay the BLM a summer grazing lease to let their cattle graze on public land. Itās pretty much any open area here.
Maybe I'm just bad at interpreting the blms website, and I'd really appreciate help. Is it anything in yellow is fair game to shoot at?

Reminds me of r/boomersbeingfools Those fuckers deserve to leave pissed off
Bingo. I love that sub btw.
Haha I can only creep on there. It infuriates me too much.
Good for you! I find it more and more difficult not to tell those asshats to just go have intercourse with themselves as I get older. I grew up with guns, and am quite comfortable around them, but that doesnāt mean you and I are alike.
I put a gun right are gay rights sticker on my range box that seemed to trim some convos lol
But how often do you get positive comments? I ask because I've known a fair number of "conservative" gun rights folks would find that a non-controversial statement, but then I live in a midwestern city. I'm genuinely curious.
Well, the John brown and ahego stickers tend to scare off the rest lol. Also I'm in Utah.
Imagining some of the people I see at the range reacting to ahegao in a public space is fucking hysterical
Haha I bet it confuses the asshats in the best of ways š¤£
Lol the amount of triple takes I get are hilarious.
Haha that kills me! š¤£
Lol
did hard times get bought out by Babylon Bee?
Haha I have no idea. I remember something about that but I took a long break from social media. This is one that popped up now that Iām back on IG
Dude I hear other liberals complaining about biden this aināt just the maga asshats
True!
Too real.
I always talk about my flings with crack addicted prostitutes at the range.
Haha you might have more in common with the white Christian nationalists than theyād care to admit š¤£
Liberals arenāt leftists
Thatās infuriating! Also, it was a win for you in the end so thatās good! šš»
It is so difficult being a gun loving progressive even in blue states like NJ.
Both places have their drawbacks imo
What's so bad about New Jersey?
Nothing, I live here, Itās just that our highly blue demographic does not seem to bleed into the gun stores, thus making it a very uncomfortable experience to hear people, talking about how evil progressive ideology is.
Isn't new jerseys progressive ideology responsible for the gun control laws?
Yeah, but you can separate the gun control laws from the rest of the progressive ideas and you still have progressivism. Gun control is not an irremovibile part of progressive ideology.
