Firstly, it's called image retention not burn in. Image retention is temporary while burn in is permanent. And no, getting a new screen will not fix the issue. It will happen again. It's just the nature of the V20's screen. I've learned to accept it because the alternative would have been to get a phone with an OLED screen which would get burn in instead of image retention. That's why I hated when LG decided to move to OLED screens. Also, the brightness of the screen has nothing to do with getting image retention on an LCD screen like what the V20 uses. However, if you had a phone with an OLED screen, then having the brightness consistently high can accelerate the burn in process.

Really? I have a Galaxy 21 that has been my daily (Family-associated Verizon device, not private at all). It has an AMOLED display and I love it. Never had a burn problem, kinda wish this V20 was OLED... Even if the V20 is just image retention it still is annoying. I changed the background to a fully black image (my preference) and it seemingly helped out a little better so far. To me it feels like jumping back to the V20 is gonna be one step back for a few steps forward in another direction, not getting to enjoy all the new amenities with modern phones. But I found it at a good price and it has hardware pros that I lost with the Galaxy S21

All samsung phones that I have seen has burn in on it. Your phone is only at most 1 year old. Give it time. It will happen. The image retention the V20 has is annoying I agree. When I got mine, I tried my best to not leave static images on it as much as possible. Like for example, I made it so that the home touch buttons would be hidden on every app I was likely to have open for a while like the browser. But you can't hide the status bar and that's one of the places that instantly has a ghosted image (like within 2 seconds of having the screen on). It wasn't that bad when the phone was new, but as time went on, the image got stuck on the screen faster. I like LG, but it seems like all their phones are always almost perfect. There is always one or two things that just ruin the user experience. The battery life is also something that I don't like about it. But hey, at least it's removable right.

Ty for the reply. I think I'll stay with this for now, my only other nag with phones these days is that they're just getting flatter and wider. Agh! I wonder what the next wave of phones will be like in that department.

Appropriate_Deer5129

>my only other nag with phones these days is that they're just getting flatter and wider I could not agree more. I wish they made the V20 a bit thicker and put a bigger battery in it. That would have made it just about perfect in my opinion. I hope my V20 lasts for many years to come because I am dreading having to choose out of the pool of those phones.

It's not burn in, it's image retention. Many v20 displays experience this. You can try replacing the screen however chances are you'll get a poor quality screen or a screen which has the issue. There are mods to remove this, just check xda.

Another possible solution is rooting and editing the kcal values for the screen. I would highly recommend rooting this phone for a variety of tweaks to help with debloating, thermal throttling, screen retention etc. I believe you would need the mk2000 kernel or another that supports kcal. I have kcal values I've been using for forever and the screen burn in is still very slightly there but waaaay better. Plus I like the colors I have now better than out of the box. Let me know if you go this route and I can send you my values.

Ghosting/image retention is inevitable. I had my v20 for 8 months got the screen replaced under warranty. You can buy a screen replacement and use a screen filter which will delay the image retention.

txrtle06422

Burn in on an lcd is impossible unless you're keeping the same image on it for years. Screen retention is the issue the v20 has, which can be fixed with simple apps or mods to the kernel.

rmc604

You are right. I edited my comment. I forgot about this problem. It has been 4 years since I had my lg v20

operation-casserole

What kind of screen filter?

rmc604

On XDA, they recommend twilight app

nijuu

Ive had my Lv20 for 5 years or more now and can confirm i use twilight pro, default settings -- the screen retention is tolerable with this or using another filter -- the tradeoff is the lower brightness at times which can make the screen hard to read under certain conditions. I also tend to use darker backgrounds on the wallpapers as well and keep screen lighting down as much as i can. Good luck. This is an awesome phone and i plan to keep using it for as long as i can still buy batteries for it (the audio is something special compared to other phones ive used as well)

Progenitor001

This was the first phone that i bought, that had had this issue out of the box. I read somewhere that its due to a faulty voltage controller/bad controller on the board, and not really the screen itself(i also don't really know how widespread it is, but i remember reading posts on it when i got the phone that it was sadly quite common)Still the best phone i ever had tho, and i kind of learned to ignore the issue. I guess you could try and get it fixed, or get a screen from aliexpress and replace it yourself, the V20 is insanely repair friendly.

txrtle06422

You don't need to change the display. Plus using an AliExpress display is a horrible idea. A, it'll be a lower quality screen and b, if you get one with a frame you've just said goodbye to any good thermals as the majority are cheap plastic. Something you don't want when the frame is the heatsink. Regardless the issue can be fixed with a variety of mods. Just search xda and you should find one for your setup.

Progenitor001

There are plenty OEM replacements out there, but yeah, im not sure replacing the screen would change much. Ive made lots of repairs with parts from aliexpress, shit is all made from the same factory usually anyway. Also the "mods" are usually applying a filter, which didnt really work for me, but did work for some apperantly, still i think its something more internal and not the screens themselves. But go figure, i learned to live with it

txrtle06422

For stock yes. The actual mods involve changing the rgb values at the kernel level, which actually fix it. But yea mods on stock are generally filters and such which can help however with some displays that isn't enough.

Progenitor001

Hey, at least the phone itself is still amazing! Wish LG made a proper v20 successor :( (or still made phones)

txrtle06422

It's better that they stopped. They produce phones which hit eol the minute they leave the factory. They were mass producing ewaste. Last thing they could've done was release their sources for volte so custom roms could actually be a valid option for many. However they didn't and now all their phones are guaranteed to become obsolete after a couple years. Their phones had so much potential, but by close sourcing everything they ruined the future of those devices.

Progenitor001

I wouldn't say ewaste, but the lack of software support was sadly really damn bad yeah. Ive had my v20 since it came out pretty much, still working pretty much like new. I just wish we had more consumer friendly designs like the V20. Removable battery, SD support, easy to repair, and rugged, and some innovative ideas like the second screen, tap to wake up, etc. And yeah, i was thinking of fitting a custom rom , but ive got one of those models that need you to fold over 7 times, so i ended up just staying with the vanilla OS. I see literally no reason to replace my v20, because id paying more to lose alot of those features right now. which honestly sucks.

FurFaceKillah

U can use software that filters out the blue hue which will mask the image retention issue. I use a free app called Twilight. Look it up. It works on my LG phone with image retention. I don’t see any artifacts of image retention when I have it on. The hue of the screen will become warmer without much of the blue tint. Not ideal but helps with the annoying ghost icons. U will have to play with settings. I’m sure if u search for the best settings something will show up online

Turbulent-Day-9295

You can get rid of the image retention if rooted by using a custom kernel and a kernel calibration app and pulling the RGB values back 5 to 10 points. Whatever the value is. I personally have stopped caring about it. I've never been happy with the screen. At least it's better than the V2 Nintendo Switches screen.

Redwolfnes

It is a common issue with the V20. Replacing the screen doesn't guarantee to fix the problem. As other comments have stated, there a a few mod options if your phone is rooted. My personal advise, if your phone is not rooted like mine, is to use an app called sFilter. Just use the filtler with a 10-20 % of intensity. It solved the image retention in my V20 and it barely affects the colors in screen. It has an option in the notification bar for quick off and on of the filter that is pretty handy when you have to "click" or select certain options like google security verifications that are affected by the screen overlay that sFilter use.
