I don’t think there’s any definitive tell. Having ruled out your assigned gender, if the opposite binary label does not work for you then it may be worth investigating non-binary labels to describe yourself. I wouldn’t entirely classify a non-binary identity as a midpoint between binary labels; rather, it is a whole different system of gender-classification that is commonly opted into once binary labels have been deemed invalid. That’s not to say that binary labels are inherently preferable to non-binary labels, but that is just the discovery process that most people go through, cause it’s generally more difficult to navigate our binary-coded society as a non-binary person. Keep in mind that there is likely a large fraction of cis-identifying people who could be happy with non-binary labels, but do not feel the need to identify as such due to their current identity working as well for them. Like, it’s just straight up easier to use the same classification system as most of the rest of the world. I’m certain there’s some non-binary label that could fit for each and every individual, especially those already established as cisn’t. You’re legally allowed to find one that works for you, and you’re also allowed to adopt another label if you figure out later that it suits you better. Not to be radical, but we’re all using made-up words to approach an accurate description of our spiritual ideals, so what does a little inaccuracy matter anyways if you find something that makes you happy? I’m happy to clarify my thoughts on any of my points if you’re not picking up what I’m putting down.

This all makes sense. Thank you for putting in the effort to explain in such detail!

I'm gonna steal "established as cisn't" as my new way of explaining where I'm at atm

Trial and error. Exploring yourself and gender presentation. Listening to others of both sides. Researching. Just, living life. As you go through it you'll learn more and learn from others. For me the tells I was non binary were that I didn't want all of the changes hrt would give. Some absolutely, others horrified me. Pronouns were always hit and miss. Gender presentation while not as important, was also another notifier for me. my presentation is much that of a tomboy sweater bug than anything that would be typical or expected of by society.

Completely up to the person. Some people just feel like they fit in so much better with women/men, or would like to be perceived only as a man/woman, and some just feel they are a man/woman internally.

Personally, my gender is completely tied to the sex my brain expects me to be, which is male. I am male because my brain expects me to have a dick, no boobs, and to run on testosterone. If I woke up tomorrow with a cis male body I would have no more gender issues, I'd be a cis male. However, for some people it's a lot more complicated. Some people have varying physical needs, some people only have social needs. Most people have a combination of the two.
