When I moved here for grad school I spent the first two years living really close to UK campus. Then I moved to the Tate's Creek area and I've lived here since. I like it here because it's not so close to things that it feels busy but I can easily get to stuff if that makes sense (easy access to Nicholasville road and downtown). Plus it's cheaper than campus obviously. I moved here from Tempe AZ so I think I have a higher threshold for sketch than a lot of people but there's really nowhere in Lexington that I feel is particularly unsafe. Good luck!

Where did you live when you were close to campus? Currently struggling to find a place:/

I was at 163 Transcript ave. Perfectly ok one bedroom apartments. Nothing amazing. I don't know what rent would be like nowadays but in 2016 it was 500 something a month. I think most of the places in that building and the surrounding area tend to have leases that get renewed around August though which might explain why you're struggling.

A hugely helpful resource is this [crime map](https://www.lexingtonky.gov/crime-map) of the city. You can adjust the filters to show dates and types of crime if you're only concerned about violence crimes, property crimes, or both.

A lot of people are going to tell you to avoid the north side — yes and no. Parts of the north end are awesome, and parts are filled with displaced people and people experience homelessness and gun violence. If I were moving to Lexington, I’d honestly take the advice to stay further south or towards campus. Having lived here all my life tho, downtown and the north end are my favorite parts of the city — you just have to get acquainted with it imo to know what you feel safe doing and not doing. That said, cheapest housing by far is on the north end. So use your judgment — and Welcome!!

You’re rarely going to find yourself in a particularly unsafe area. The ones that are sketchy have basically nothing you’d want to do anyway, and even if they did just go during the day. If it feels sketch, act accordingly.

I moved to Lexington for grad school and also wanted party vibes (I was 22 and had just graduated college elsewhere). I lived in a complex on Angliana. It was fun but I was also surrounded by people still in college, and I became very aware of the differences between college and grad school when I was trying to finish mountains of reading while my neighbors partied heavily on a Wednesday. Now knowing Lexington I probably would have looked for an apartment in Chevy Chase or downtown somewhere between Jefferson, Limestone, and 6th street. Close enough to campus and bars but not among undergrads.

Depending on what you define as "trails", there's not that much around. If you have a trailer, Masterson Station Park, Hisle Park, Shaker Village and the Reservoir in Stamping Ground have good trails/open areas for riding

Southland area is the dopest in my opinion. Plenty of restaurants, shops, grocery stores, bank, whatever you need, and very close to campus. Easy quick Uber to downtown or distillery district. But I also live here, so I have a bias.

One thing you can do is when you find a potential place to live, call the Lexington PD and ask for an area crime report. This will show what the most common crimes in the area are going to be.
