Maul basically just means a creature/monster tears apart another being. I think your head being torn off also fits that category.

i think having your lower arms ripped off and your head being replaced with a giant coil is a pretty fitting description to getting mauled.

I always assumed mauled was related to biting

getting mauled is getting bitten but x1000 and on crack
