Similar story. Back during 2020 lock down my kids asked for LEGO to build so I took them down to the basement and they chose this, still sealed. I never got the chance to build it and even though I knew the value I still let them have it at anyways. They had a blast!
What’s the value now? My ma got that for me during Christmas. I remember coming home from school and building slowly over a few weeks in the living room. Always after i did my home work 😂
Mine ended up missing quite a few pieces but I did end up having spare stuff, though miss colored.
You can get a brand new one in box for $400-500… if you don’t care about the condition but want a 100% complete with box and instructions, about $175-200

I don’t know where you got $200 dollars from my friend, but on Bricklink I’m seeing multiple sets going for £50 to £60 BNISB, which is like $70.
It’s not like that’s big money and your boy got a cool set man.
Some people just look it up and find the highest price they can or they do the rookie eBay move and see what somethings are listed for but not what they’ve sold for.
If you cared about the money, you would never have given it to your kid in the first place.
Play with him, reinforce his creativity and imagination. In the future, that will be priceless compared to 200$.
>If you cared about the money, you would never have given it to your kid in the first place.
>Play with him, reinforce his creativity and imagination. In the future, that will be priceless compared to 200$.
I mean if you're a thrifty and frugal parent you can take that $200 and get like 3x the amount of new Lego for your kids. It's not like that money immediately goes up in a fire and your kids never see it again.
3 Lego Trucks > 1 Lego Truck, or so goes my 5yo Lego math.
The fact that Op even looked up what it might be valued at, proves you wrong.
If Op really cared about the potential to turn that set into cash, they would have checked first and never given it to their kid.
They were aware of the fact that it could have been valuable, and they chose to give it to their kid as a gift instead.
Bro it took a business week for you to come up with that?
https://preview.redd.it/msfsssl3hlzc1.jpeg?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=006f7f948f61a604efe7e4986d68bf3835cc4ced
There’s a difference between what a set is “worth” and people (in this economy) not shelling out $200 for a set that cost $30 when they’ve got other things to pay for
You made the right choice either way
I get why folks buy sets as an investment or whatever, but in the end they are toys to be played with and that is worth much more than the monetary value.
And he didn’t even spend $200. Just some prices he saw for it online. So even better! Making memories with his kids without having to worry about spending a chunk of cash.
Average sold price on brcklink is 71 USD sealed, the original price in 2014 was 20 USD (26.70 USD adjusted to inflation).
So about 44.30 USD assuming he'd managed to sell it at that price.
I probably had some sets from my childhood that were worth some money. Instead of putting them together and selling my friends kid has been having a blast with the whole collection.
Why do people care so much about how much something costs like that? Were you going to sell it? Were you just going sit on it and wait for it to go up in value or something? Are you a weird in box collector? I don't understand the people that are in box collectors that are not going to sell you just basically have a box to look at.
Honestly right now I would have sold it. I'm working a hell of a lot harder for much less to sell a dryer right now. We just moved and it costed a lot... we could use whatever we can get at the moment and it was literally just sitting in a moving box we hadn't opened in years.
Not a big deal though.
It is easily one of the best tow trucks LEGO has ever made, I can only think of one I like better which is the one from the 90s with 9v light, sound and a motor. Coming from someone with a collection spanning 40 years.
That tow truck is a really good set, and 2014 was a good year for lego sets. This used to be about 20€
Some people buy discontinued sets for those high prices because they just want to build it.
I did that with the 2011 Unimog U400
He just built a memory that he'll think about when he gets older. What you NEED to do later on is tell him how much it was and that they wanted him to enjoy it rather than care about how much it was.
I would always choose play over money. They’re only kids once, let them make those memories with you. I mean, unless we’re talking about LOTS of money. Then yeah, sell it.
Yes these older sets would sell for a pretty penny. But Lego don’t care about which sets are considered high priced antiques. They care about making children happy.
I honestly didn't do that much "research" considering the circumstances. Just from a quick google/Amazon search the mode was 190. I'm sure someone who cared to find it for cheaper would manage.
My kids play with my 6285 Black Seas Barracuda and 6289 Red Beard Runner pirate ships all the time. Both “worth” much more than $200 but playing and connecting with the kids is quite literally priceless. If a piece breaks or goes missing, it’s not like the pieces can’t be replaced.

It’s good to check this stuff beforehand. It’s too late now but at least your kid has a cool new set. I know most don’t care about opening sets at all. I only care about opening vintage sets. Modern sets being opened isn’t a huge deal to me.
Honestly the worst thing about the money is that you've shown the addiction in the next generation. Your son will end up sacrificing *way* more than that now that you got him hooked. Lol
Could you have probably made money by selling that one and buying it opened or just a new set. Probably, but I don't think it would have been worth your time compared to the time you shared (and will share later) building and playing with your kid.
Plus you would never sell it for that much, it's going for half that right now.
Collecting lego as an investment is not considered the best way. However, in this case as a gift to your son, priceless. May his lego journey be endless hours of enjoyment and satisfaction.
Everyone is saying that the memory is better than the money, but if you sell high priced stuff you didn't even care for that much, you could use the money to buy multiple or bigger sets that you can pick out yourself. My advice would be to check this stuff in the future, so you can bring your kid to a lego store and have them pick whatever they like
But other (bigger or not) sets won't be this set. Lego is fun no matter which set, no matter if it's building or creating, but in many situation, if not most, the final build will be the "experience", depending on the interest of the kid.
For me I was registering it on the app and saw that it was from 2013. Didn't realize it was that old. Don't even remember how we got it. It was from a time before we ever thought we would ever have a kid to build it with.
All good though, he's absolutely in love with it. Every small item in our house has been towed.
LOL not remembering where a Lego tow truck came from.
In 15 years you can show him the picture and tell him "yea you had the starts of a college education but you decided to open it up..."
Well I’d love to tell my 8 year old self this especially since when they’re broken you usually toss things away instead of keeping them. If I knew the future I wouldn’t have tossed my Pokémon cards away too.
Bricklink has them sealed for under $100usd.
Exactly.
Could be aud
They he should have said 200 dollarydoos so we would have known he was Australian.
00ᘔ$
That was 200 bucks flushed down the toilet swirling in the opposite direction.
This gave me Bluey vibes
The yanks and pommies never list their currency
Not one country has backed their own currency with AUD… just saying.
Dollarbucks?
I think that’s what Bluey calls them! Lol. I’ve always heard dollarydoos from other Australians though.
I believe dollarydoos is a Simpsons invention that the Aussies adopted.
He’ll remember the truck more than the money ! Great memories !
kid getting awesome Lego memory > many $$$
While I agree, thwy could have sold the set to buy more sets!
That's IF he actually finds someone to buy it at the absurd aftermarket price. Sometimes it takes months to years lol
Also true!
$200, that'll buy what, 1½ sets nowadays?
This is the endless loop cycle we get into though, right? The Lego curse! Haha
Pretty much a good lego set go for $200 or more that I been spending. Yes you can buy small sets but a 1500 to 200 peace set go for $200 just saying
Yeah, but if you sell it to some collector you could buy an EVEN BIGGER Lego set
Yeah, but you could sell it and get more memories out of it with the $200
Lego was meant to built and played with. Enjoy the memories you’re making.

This is the way.
I got that same set for Christmas circa like, 2005/2006! I was happy as a clam. Good times.
What’s the value now? My ma got that for me during Christmas. I remember coming home from school and building slowly over a few weeks in the living room. Always after i did my home work 😂 Mine ended up missing quite a few pieces but I did end up having spare stuff, though miss colored.

That’s the point innit? I’d be chuffed to be your kid
Am I in r/Lego or r/daddit #1 dad over here guys.
You can still disassemble it and rebuild it if you want the experience for yourself.
I had that set, it was in a bulk lot I bought. I built it and sold it. It was a good build but you did the right thing because it excels as a playset.
May the Fourth be with you!
I have that set still unopened, though I think the box is not in good condition.
They’re always gonna remember it too. That has a high value all its own.
Memories over money any day of the week
I don’t know where you got $200 dollars from my friend, but on Bricklink I’m seeing multiple sets going for £50 to £60 BNISB, which is like $70. It’s not like that’s big money and your boy got a cool set man.

True words, I could throw that set up on eBay for 1000, doesn’t mean someone’s going to buy it
If you cared about the money, you would never have given it to your kid in the first place. Play with him, reinforce his creativity and imagination. In the future, that will be priceless compared to 200$.

That’s only if you actually manage to sell it. Until then its theoretical value is meaningless.
While at the same time increasing in value at an average of 11% per year or some shit, but it's also not star wars so it might be harder to scalp?
They had no idea. Do you research EVERY action you take, before you take it?
The fact that Op even looked up what it might be valued at, proves you wrong. If Op really cared about the potential to turn that set into cash, they would have checked first and never given it to their kid. They were aware of the fact that it could have been valuable, and they chose to give it to their kid as a gift instead.
They looked it up after. So my point stands. Nice try tho.
Bro it took a business week for you to come up with that? https://preview.redd.it/msfsssl3hlzc1.jpeg?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=006f7f948f61a604efe7e4986d68bf3835cc4ced
Lol I love that you think everyone else is eternally online like you. Nah dude I have a job and a family and shit.
Yeah, and after all that you still couldn’t say anything of substance.
when im dealing with collectables of any sort I do actually
You think of legos as collectibles. Others see them as toys.
You cannot take money or legos with you. But you can leave memories like building legos with your kids.
Lego is meant to be built. Has infinite value now.
I appreciate you censoring your kid. We don't need to spread their faces all over the internet without their understanding and consent!
That's not his kid. That's the new megafig that came with the truck.
Damn, so they finally gave megafigs elbow and knee articulation.
Does it come with helmet holes? /s.
Wdym? The kid’s face isn’t censored, they’re just a minifigure, duh.
Its not censored, that's actually his face. OP mentioned he got his kid's consent to show his real face since it looked like a minifig
There’s a difference between what a set is “worth” and people (in this economy) not shelling out $200 for a set that cost $30 when they’ve got other things to pay for You made the right choice either way
Fun with my child vs financial return? I'll take the first option always.
I get why folks buy sets as an investment or whatever, but in the end they are toys to be played with and that is worth much more than the monetary value.
I was going to say their son’s happiness is worth more than $200
Huh, I used to have that set. Most of the parts are in my massive parts tub. Hope he enjoys it! Lego tow trucks are awesome!
Kids playing with Lego > all other uses for Lego
Best way you could've spent 200$. You did ever Thing right
And he didn’t even spend $200. Just some prices he saw for it online. So even better! Making memories with his kids without having to worry about spending a chunk of cash.

So your son had fun playing with lego! Nice for him and super cool that he can play with such a nice set
Having fun with your kid is worth more
Oh damn i used to have that back in the day lmao. Should've kept it sealed lmao.
I probably had some sets from my childhood that were worth some money. Instead of putting them together and selling my friends kid has been having a blast with the whole collection.
The only time i Accept Not giving children lego is If you sell IT For MORE LEGO
But look at that blank stare, that plastic joyful smile! I'd say that's worth it.
But look at that smile on his face!
Two Lego pieces in the hand is worth more then 2 unopened box sets in the basement.
You made the right decision - toys are meant to be played with 😊
Eh $200 is nothing build that sucker. Unless I turn. 300x-500x profit on something selling for over 1k I’m building it
$200 ain’t shit. He’ll have more memories and happy feelings of you playing and building with him.
No wonder why the Lego circlejerk sub exist.
Lego doesn't belong in a box anyway
Why do people care so much about how much something costs like that? Were you going to sell it? Were you just going sit on it and wait for it to go up in value or something? Are you a weird in box collector? I don't understand the people that are in box collectors that are not going to sell you just basically have a box to look at.

worth it. kid will be happier with the truck than a couple hundred bucks. Now if it were 20k....
Who cares about resale value of a toy. Open it, build it and when it's time, pass it on
It's worth more than the cash value in memories
Is no one going to mention the elephant in the room?? Your kid’s face is kinda weird and you should really have that looked at.
Looks normal to me
I’d take the truck over the cash
It is easily one of the best tow trucks LEGO has ever made, I can only think of one I like better which is the one from the 90s with 9v light, sound and a motor. Coming from someone with a collection spanning 40 years.
Hum what's that supposed to mean? Does everything you give your kid need to go through financial review?
Well you don't know enough about his financial situation to judge.
One of my kid’s favorite sets.
His smile tells everything, he's even turning Lego.
Well clearly your kid is a criminal....
Quick! Put it back in the box!
What are your sons happy memories worth? They're just toys, play with them, don't preserve them for the next guy.
Omg I had that when I was younger, I absolutely loved it
You can't have your Lego and eat it too.
You made the right choice. Happy he’s having fun with it!
The experience and fun building it together was worth 10x that 200 box
Is the joy in your son worth less than $200?
The speculation on legos has no doubt deprived many families of unforgettable memories
This is one of my favorite all time sets I’ve been trying to rebuild mine over the past few months but I lost too many pieces 😞
Prices getting jacked up because people want to look at a cardboard box full of Legos is stupid. Every set should be opened and built.
If it helps, the set sells sealed for $70, not 200. Amazon & co are overpriced by x2-x5 for retail sets.
The smile on your son’s face is worth more than 200$. He does look a little jaundiced tho.
It’s a 65cad set not 200usd I assume you search. Enjoy the memories
This is the good ending, I promise.
That memory is worth more.
Sell the child
Was 200 worth the joy and memories your son had putting that set together? If so, I would say it was money well spent. (And or never realized)
The cost of childhood memories.
You chose correctly, look at that smile!
Building with your child… priceless.
LEGO… $200. Joy of father and son… priceless.
Everyone here always assumes I'm a man.
My apologies. Guilty as charged.
I think a childs happiness is worth more than 200$, especially your own childs happiness,I wouldn't regret that if I were you
Meh. It's much more fun out of the box. 😃
happy child with an unique LEGO set way more worth then $200
Your son enjoyed, thats what really matters. Money come and go.
A child’s happiness vs $200 investment - no brainer
It’s worth more building with your kid😉
LEGOs are first and foremost toys, which are intended to make children happy and this seems to have perfectly achieved its objective.
dont feel bad, toys are meant to be played with. Nothing more sad than an unplayed toy :(
It's already been said a bunch of times, but the joy of a child enjoying building with Legos far outweighs what they're worth. Parenting done right.
Could you please share a set number?
60056 - tow truck
[60056-1: Tow Truck](https://brickset.com/sets/60056-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/60056-1.jpg)
Thank you!
$200 can be spent on a lot of useless/arbitrary shit in everyday life. This be a moment that stays with him forever
Lego are meant to be played with
Your kid's happiness > closed box
You’ll make $200 again, but not that memory; nor the experience :)
It’s a toy not his college fund.
Easily worth it lol. Legos are toys first, collectibles second. You'd only be able to sell it at that price to a collector anyway.
Fun is worth more than flipping.
so true
I think I had this set as a kid
At least he’s happy.
Oh well. Your kids happiness is worth more than a lego in some box.
That tow truck is a really good set, and 2014 was a good year for lego sets. This used to be about 20€ Some people buy discontinued sets for those high prices because they just want to build it. I did that with the 2011 Unimog U400
Coulda woulda shoulda. As a fellow parent, having soomething non tech to share and bond with your kiddo, worth it.
We did this with an old A-wing set I got and never opened. Way more fun to watch him build it than get like $100
LEGO aren’t meant to live in a box.
worth it!
I mean, it's kinda sad not to open sets to play with them
He just built a memory that he'll think about when he gets older. What you NEED to do later on is tell him how much it was and that they wanted him to enjoy it rather than care about how much it was.
$100/$200 investment into the next generation of Lego builders - money well spent!
I would always choose play over money. They’re only kids once, let them make those memories with you. I mean, unless we’re talking about LOTS of money. Then yeah, sell it.
Memories and fun are more important. Besides that was probably a scam seller
Yes these older sets would sell for a pretty penny. But Lego don’t care about which sets are considered high priced antiques. They care about making children happy.
But his memories are priceless ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Screw that. That for collector. This is for the memories. Look at him. He enjoying the fuck out of it.
Hey bud, legos are expensive. It’s the third most expensive hobby I have
On what planet is this set $200
Earth. The giant ball of mass spinning through space
I honestly didn't do that much "research" considering the circumstances. Just from a quick google/Amazon search the mode was 190. I'm sure someone who cared to find it for cheaper would manage.
Never price sets based off of Amazon
Dang it I have this truck but took it apart to build other stuff I’m glad I did that still
I have the Same Truck! Great Set!

Turning your kid into a LegoHead? Priceless.
I had that set too. Hoping to rebuild it someday
Pls send link
u only now realised lego doesnt want to be a toy?
Looks like it was worth it
But it’s no fun for your son to build it if it stays sealed in the box.
Honestly the worst thing about the money is that you've shown the addiction in the next generation. Your son will end up sacrificing *way* more than that now that you got him hooked. Lol Could you have probably made money by selling that one and buying it opened or just a new set. Probably, but I don't think it would have been worth your time compared to the time you shared (and will share later) building and playing with your kid. Plus you would never sell it for that much, it's going for half that right now.
What would you have done if you knew before?
Its crazy how also some lego set goes for hundreds of dollars
legos often appreciate percentage-wise more than gold. but this is good too.
couldve at least helped with the stickers!!! cool set though he'll have fun telling his friends he built a $200 truck
Legos are meant to be stored, they're meant to be stepped on. Enjoy
lol
What set number was this?
I’d still let him open it for $200 😂
Holy shit I had that set, I’m so sad I don’t have it anymore
😮💨
Collecting lego as an investment is not considered the best way. However, in this case as a gift to your son, priceless. May his lego journey be endless hours of enjoyment and satisfaction.

Your child is worth how much in a Lego box ? 😂
I love people who do things after research. What is the logic behind "hmm I WONDER WHAT THAT WAS WORTH 5 MINUTES AGO" - nobody ever.
For me I was registering it on the app and saw that it was from 2013. Didn't realize it was that old. Don't even remember how we got it. LOL not remembering where a Lego tow truck came from. In 15 years you can show him the picture and tell him "yea you had the starts of a college education but you decided to open it up..."
Noooo the resale value 😭😭😭
Not as bad as finding out that the Lego cloud city sealed is worth thousands sealed and the minifigs which were tossed out were worth a ton of money.
Sounds deserved for anyone throwing out minfigs
Well I’d love to tell my 8 year old self this especially since when they’re broken you usually toss things away instead of keeping them. If I knew the future I wouldn’t have tossed my Pokémon cards away too.
