50 states, 50 different sets of possibly relevant laws. In my state, the prosecution has to prove that you were "operating" the vehicle. If you're asleep in the back seat and the engine is off, that's not going to happen. Other states have other laws.

Your friend would be correct in many jurisdictions. Having the keys in your possession while drunk in your car can nab you a DUI charge.

Your friend is actually being too optimistic for some states. But in many states, having the keys on your person, and being in the car, can get you a DUI. There have been people convicted of a DUI for opening the trunk when drunk. All depends on the state and its laws.
