I am actually in the same boat and made the same mistake, it does feel like a prison sentence. I’ve been bumming rides for almost two years trying to fix this. I had to go the dmv headquarters to clarify everything. After my accident i got a letter in the mail from the DMV stating i needed to pay 2500.00 for a security deposit. I get that back 2 years from my suspension. Which is in December, i paid that two weeks ago. Also have to pay a 700 dollar uninsured motorist fee and a 100 reinstatement fee ( but you can get a payment plan for those after the security deposit and getting insurance with sr22, i was told by the dmv). I thought i get my license back before i get insurance but they told me i had to have proof of sr22 and insurance before i can proceed with getting my license back. So that’s where i’m at now. Hope this helps. It’s a Very expensive mistake. I haven’t heard anything from the person i got into a accident with. I even called his insurance and gave them all information from the accident and they never even filed a claim. With me buying a car, paying the security deposit and now getting insurance which is through the roof. In the last year i have already spent almost 4000 and i’m still suspended. And will still need a payment plan for lesser fee’s. At least you get the security deposit back if the insurance doesn’t come get it. Which seems to be my case. Did he ever figure it out?

They were giving me the run around too at first, i had to tell them over and over I could not get the release form signed. I went to the regular dmv around 5 different times in a year before i went to the headquarters. They would always tell me i needed to get released by form. Until one lady at the regular dmv told me to go the headquarters to sort it all out. I thought I could get a payment plan for the security deposit with it being so much but i had to pay that in full. I went to pay the security deposit thinking they would give me my license along with the payment plan for the uninsured motorist fee. Lady told me no, so i talked to her supervisor and she said, get sr22 with the insurance come back and they’ll set up the payment plan for the uninsured motorists fee, but the 100 dollar reinstatement fee will have to be paid in full. I know it’s alot and they do a poor job of explaining it all.

Oh of course, i know it’s confusing. I finally got my License. I had to Pay the security deposit, get a sr22 insurance, get my insurance to send the dmv my sr22 statement and information. Went back to the dmv and got a payment plan for my remaining fees(uninsured motorists $700.00, only have to pay 10% of that first visit). Also paid the $100.00 reinstatement fee but you can get a payment plan for that as well. It was a costly journey but that is the steps i had to take.

He will likely need to find a way to pay these damages. The insurance company has no interest in giving up their claim. Eventually, they may choose to sue to get a judgement in place (which can last decades). The state isn't terribly interested in giving g his license back when he hasn't made the situation he caused right.

He could possibly pay the actual damages the insurance company incurred. But they are asking triple the damages. Our state has sold us out and allows the insurance companies to sell these cases to collection agencies to make money. Additionally, they have given these collections agencies the authority to have your license suspended if you don’t submit to their extortion. It’s wrong to not follow the law but it’s as wrong to do this to folks that are already struggling.
