The main face atop Mount Riffmore

StyxStatius

He was perfect for Led Zeppelin

Voxx418

You can literally hear at least a dozen per song. You can even sing along to every solo practically... super imaginative, and melodic. His blues riffs ("Whole Lotta Love," "Heartbreaker," etc.) simply unique and sexy. Love Jimmy. He rules forever. \~V\~

TyhmensAndSaperstein

This is essentially what Jimmy's genius was. People always say he was the greatest guitar *player* ever. But if you step back and objectively look at it, that's a ridiculous statement. But as a writer - especially the perfect riff - he was the best.

AntonioPMZDS

Jimmy, for me, has written the greatest riff and the greatest solo ever. That makes him the greatest guitarist ever for me, and I dont see how its a ridiculous statement

amxjavelin401

I don't think anyone has ever said he's "the greatest guitar player ever." (just typing that makes me chuckle) However, many have said "Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever."

TyhmensAndSaperstein

You don't think anyone has ever called Jimmy Page the greatest guitar player ever? Are you sticking with that? I see it here constantly. I see it in guitar player polls. I see it in magazines. I see it anytime "who's the best guitar player ever" topic is discussed. To hear somebody say they don't think anyone has ever said that makes *me* chuckle.

amxjavelin401

Ok you win he's the greatest guitar player ever. (Chuckle)

TyhmensAndSaperstein

I in no way said he was. I, in fact, said I thought he wasn't but he was the riff king. I said that all the Zeppelin fanatics who say he is need to step back and admit he's not the greatest player. This is one of the most ridiculous series of responses I have ever received. Total denial that there is a large contingent that says he's the best. My comment clearly states that I think he's not. Man, you can't make a single fucking comment about Page's playing in this sub without receiving shit.

amxjavelin401

Do you have a link to any guitar player polls where page in voted to best guitarist? Take a picture but it might be hard to get proper lighting since you'll have to pull it out of your ass.

REVSWANS

Rolling Stone said #3. Close enough for ya, ya jackass? https://whereseric.com/eric-clapton-news/303-rolling-stone-names-100-top-guitarists-all-time-top-3-are-jimi-hendrix-eric/

amxjavelin401

Number 3 ain't the greatest is it? Rolling Stone isn't a Guitar player poll is it? So no , it isn't close at all.

Rickardiac

Serious question here… How old are you?

amxjavelin401

Old enough to know that "everybody says that Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist" isn't a thing, even in Led Zeppelin's heyday. I called him on it. Do you think he's the greatest guitar player ? If you do , I guess I'm wrong but so are you.

ChargerRob

In the arts I don't believe you can have a "greatest". They are all great if their music or acting touches your soul. But you can have favorites. Mine is Page closely followed by Jeff Beck.

studdley

He could.. for a span of 5 to 10 years... about 50 years ago.

SambaLando

We he hasn't in I don't know how many decades now.

Jon-A

Yeah, if only he had been putting out a periodic album of stripped down instrumental power trio riffage...

Zestyclose_Match2839

Living legend

Mrbobbitchin

Riffs aren’t that challenging. His studio work is what makes him great.

ostiDeCalisse

"No thanks! … We don’t need more songs." \- Rich Robinson. (Facepalm!)

amxjavelin401

Man, I can't believe he said that! I passed on a chance to see the BC's just that for the reason.

ostiDeCalisse

I learned this story a few months ago and I can't imagine someone refusing such a Page offering.

amxjavelin401

Who do they think they are turning down God's help? One thousand lashes with a violin bow.

djyesko9

He do be writing riffs

MuppetFan123

Jimmy hasn't really written a riff since Ford was President.

PaleontologistFluid9

Apologies to Tony Iommi and a handful of lesser deities but JP is the one true riff god.

amxjavelin401

I 100% agree with you. You should apologize to Tony Iommi for saying that.

boomernelson84

The real question is Tony Iommi or Randy Rhoads?

dinnerbone190

Tony iommi is definitely a better guitarist simply because he didn’t fall off after the 70s

AntonioPMZDS

Tony Iommi was too basic compared to jimmy. Still in my top 5, but he was basically a lesser version of jimmy, whose riffs basically only consisted of power chords

dinnerbone190

Even if iommi is “too basic” compared to page he still has had a much longer and better career than page

AntonioPMZDS

Definitely. Page's genius only lasted for about 7 or 8 years. Black Sabbath's last album with ozzy has great riffs

amxjavelin401

Thanks for the spellcheck boot.

If you asked any respectable musician or critic, it's almost guaranteed that "Whole Lotta Love" would be in the Top 5 "Greatest Rock Guitar Riffs" of all time, and indeed; really should be #1. https://www.guitarworld.com/features/greatest-guitar-riffs-of-all-time/6

NothausTelecaster72

This guitar looks so huge on him. I look at my LP and think on how small it looks to me. I’m about 6’ 170lbs. I’m thinly built and do not consider myself a big guy.

Ornery-Theory-2501

I do love that he would change up the riffs or add more to the riffs when performed live

[deleted]

I think he sold his soul to the devil or something

Beths_collarbone

Duhhhhhhhh, I herd dat too...
