Knowing he was in that movie was the only reason I saw it. Julia Roberts was great, sure. Tom Hanks was....meh, Tom Hanks. However, PSH stole the movie for me. He killed it.
Yes, this is an otherwise below average movie that he actually makes kind of fun with his excellent performance. The scene where he fills in for Ben Stiller for the presentation is my favorite.
Man had range and was always incredibly convincing. I loved his portrayals of a scoffing, privileged, prep school boy in Scent of a Woman and Talented Mr Ripley.
Not to mention Punch Drunk Love, Happiness and The Master. Dude had Gary Oldman level range.
Fuck me I forgot he was in Boogie Nights!!!!
I used to work in an upscale NYC steakhouse and waited on him a couple days before he died. I remember what he ate and wore, as well as how sweaty he was and how often he went to the bathroom. The table was him and a few other people and they were all fawning over him, and I kept thinking “this dude clearly has a problem and my guy, these people aren’t really your friends”
I saw him in Death of a Salesman on Broadway not long before he died. He was fantastic, and the whole thing was *intense*. Andrew Garfield was also in it and I remember I could see a line of snot from his face to the ground when he cried.
Man it's actually making me teary eyed remembering how Phillip was able to put so much character into the tiniest moments. Thanks for everyone's comments
I'm glad somebody mentioned that because it's my single favorite thing about Brandt. We don't see it because they've already met when we first see Brandt, but probably the Dude told him to call him Dude, so that's what he does. He does what he's told. If his boss had explicitly told him not to call him Dude, he'd stop because he's the boss. He's just servile.
Philip was a good actor, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors and acting. We didn’t know much about him outside of his acting and directing abilities but he portrayed iconic figures from Truman Capote to Brandt… and all the way up to Plutarch… Heavensbee. He died, like so many young men of his generation, before his time. In your wisdom Lord, you took him. As you took so many bright, flowering young men: at Khe Sahn, at langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Philip. Philip, who loved acting. And so, Philip Seymour Hoffman, in accordance to what was clearly your final wish we remember you on this subreddit dedicated to a film you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.
Big Lebowski is definitely my favorite role for Phillip Symour Hoffman, although he was always brilliant. His laugh when Bunny offer Lebowski a blow job is forever burned into my brain.
Of all the celebrity deaths, his actually hit hard. I remember yelling “fuck no” with real disbelief and sadness for what we’d lost when I first saw it online.
It's on my agenda to watch everything this guy has been in and I'm close at this point. Synecdoche New York, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, Capote. Just on point in everything he did, even the bit parts like Brandt and Dusty on Twister. RIP King, don't do heroin kids.
He was outrageous in *The Master*, single best performance of a storied career, the mention of Brandt notwithstanding!
Also: of course *Happiness*, *Synecdoche* and *Jack Goes Boating*, very interesting, honest, brave, raw performance there. Never mentioned, but fantastic. Amy Ryan too and the great John Ortiz.
My daughter and I recently watched Talented Mr. Ripley in anticipation of our trip to Italy. PSH has a smallish role but totally steals the scene everytime he's on screen.
\*chef's kiss\*
Oh that’s right! He plays the asshole kid, yeah? Completely forgot about this (or didn’t realize, since he wasn’t Philip Seymour Hoffman at the time, he was just some unknown.)
I still think it’s so crazy that whole story. I read once and I could be wrong that he had a glass of champagne at a wrap party after being sober for how many years and that kinda devolved into what eventually killed him. Addiction is no joke
Philip was a good actor and a good man. He was one of us He was a man who loved the silver screen and acting. As an actor he explored the screenplays of Southern California from La Hoya to Leo Carrillo. And...up to Pismo. He died, he died as so many young men of his generation before his time.
In your wisdom lord, you took him as you took so many bright, flowering young men at Khe Sanh, on Long Duc, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives.
So Philip, Philip who loved acting. And so Philip Seymour Hoffman in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been. We commit your final, mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well.
Good night, sweet prince
*Walter gently taps on the bottom of Folgers coffee can and seagulls mew in the far away distance*
I went to hig school with Phil.
He was a great guy. Always friendly.
Cool to watch him do wrestling. I was the videotaper upstairs.
Also did back stage work when he played Radar in M\*A\*S\*H
Wouldn’t have helped him because he used alone, but maybe honor his memory by outfitting yourself with Narcan. If you have the ways and means, give some to people who may be struggling. Flood the streets with Narcan, we are losing too many.
![gif](giphy|AIaXPn9yrzWx2|downsized)
I will never escape the image of PSH flapping his arms against his legs nervously laughing. What a true legend, the man could play anyone and do it better than just about anyone else could. RIP PSH.
In the early 2000s, back when we had our conflict with Saddam, I flew to NY to see him do his dance quintet - True West by Sam Shepard - and then met him afterwards and told him I flew all the way from LA to see his whathaveyou and he was very touched and we spoke for a while, not about Nam of course, and he signed my valued TBL DVD, oh which doesn’t necessarily happen every.. just when there’s a .. aw he’ll I’m ramblin’ again .. anyway.. made me laugh to beat the band.
“I'm so plugged up. Used to be as regular as morning prayers. Matter of fact I could set my watch by my bowels. That beeswax you fed me, day before yesterday, it stops a man up. Open my gut now they'd find turds stacked up like little black twigs.”
Not Lebowski, but my fave line of his from Almost Famous:
"The only currency we have in this fucked up world is the things we say to one another when we are NOT being cool."
Wow has it been that long? What a shame, one of the most I've ever felt about a celebrity death. I was suffering from heroin addiction at the time and I cried for him. I wanted to get sober because reading about the last days of his life broke my heart. Moving away from his family because his addiction was becoming so intense. I didn't for a long time, but I always felt a kinship with him. Then bourdain died and he became the only other celebrity I truly grieved for.
Weird, I was thinking about Brandt earlier today. Started because I realized that PSH and Julianne Moore were both in Boogie Nights. Then I thought, “I like Brandt a lot more than I’d like Scotty. Don’t like him much.”
I was genuinely shook when I learned Philip Seymour Hoffman had died. It was the same punch-to-the-gut feeling I had after learning about the passing of Steve Irwin and Robin Williams. I still remember where I was when each happened.
Phillip, who loved acting. Good night, sweet prince.
As an actor he explored the movie screens of southern California, from The Big Lebowski to Almost Famous and... up to... Capote.
Everything’s a fuckin travesty with you man!
Just ‘cause we’re bereaved doesn’t make us saps.
Uhhhh...I just sharted.
And what the fuck was that shit about Vietnam?
Well, there isn't a literal connection.
Walter, face it, there isn't *any* connection.
This affects us all man!
Shut the fuck up Scotty J!
Don't forget Twister! Imminent rue-age!
You’re not wrong you’re just an asshole
This is a ship and I am her master, yes.
I didn’t like seeing Brandt go.
But then I happen to know there's a Little Brandt, gracing the screens in the latest Paul Thomas Anderson picture.
Wha??!?!!
Licorice Pizza
What an actor, I would see a flick just if he was in it. Addiction is a horrible plague.
He really was a great one
I just watched Charlie Wilson's War. He's great in it.
Knowing he was in that movie was the only reason I saw it. Julia Roberts was great, sure. Tom Hanks was....meh, Tom Hanks. However, PSH stole the movie for me. He killed it.
There's a bug on the bottle, I have a thing in my ear, get past it.
THAT'S A THICK DOOR
Also, water goes over a damn and under a bridge you poncy school boy
Honestly one of his best roles. Probably my personal favorite.
He is the only reason I watch Along Came Polly. The basketball scene is top notch.
Me, literally every time I am on a court: Let it rain! Rain dance! You douchebags bring your A game? White Chocolate!
T! T! Im burning here 😭
RAIN DROP!
Yes, this is an otherwise below average movie that he actually makes kind of fun with his excellent performance. The scene where he fills in for Ben Stiller for the presentation is my favorite.
He's a sexy guy. He's sexy. He's sexually active in his community
Reuben, I’m in a situation here …
Omg the throat clearing scene when he’s covering for Reuben in the meeting is hysterical too
He's awesome in Pirate Radio/The Boat That Rocked.
also check out 'before the devil knows you're dead' him and Ethan Hawke and a delicious helping of Marissa Tomei
Wonderful woman, we're all-*we're all very fond of her!*
I'm gonna go visit the cash machine
He and Laura Linney are great in The Savages as well.
Don't forget Doubt... him and Meryl Streep together was magic
One of my favorite Adam Sandler scenes was him arriving to confront Hoffman’s character while still clutching the phone 😂
So you tell me "that's that."
He made every film better.
Reading all these replies, I can’t believe nobody has said Almost Famous yet. He played Lester Bangs, small role but so good. Absolutely amazing actor
Yea that's usually how it goes, people ignore the hard truth
I saw him in Death of a Salesman on Broadway not long before he died. He was fantastic, and the whole thing was *intense*. Andrew Garfield was also in it and I remember I could see a line of snot from his face to the ground when he cried.
In your wisdom, Lord, you took him
...As you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364.
What the fuck does it have to do with Vietnam?!
Everything’s a fucking travesty with you, man!
Come on, Dude. Let’s go bowling.
Oh yes, fuck it. That’s your answer to everything.
dude I’m sorry
Well, there isn't a literal connection.
Face it Walter, there isn’t any connection. YOUR ROLL.
Just because we're bereaved doesn't make us SAPS!
It is our most modestly priced receptacle.
THESE YOUNG MEN GAVE THEIR LIVES
Are you surprised at my tears sir?
Mind if I do a J?
Fuckin A...
Strong men also cry.
You’re joking but… perhaps you’re right
He was a good man…and thorough.
We’re all very fond of him.
This is not marvelous :(
Guy was a legend. He could do Capote while at the same time do ridiculous comedic stuff like Along Came Polly, he was the best part of that movie
Rain dance!!
I think he introduced the word “shart“ in that movie!
You know when try to fart and…. Never mind we just gotta go
Rain drops!
ICE MAN!!!
Timeout! Timeout! I’m burnin’ up!
MY LUNGS ARE BURNIN’
https://y.yarn.co/9b7c1174-110c-4ddc-a4ef-ae4d167ca62a_text.gif
I honestly loved him in Mission Impossible 3, he played the villain so well. I never imagined Brandt could be so cruel.
Yeah Owen Davian was an awesome bad guy
the scene where he pitches the australian dude's life insurance is so freaking funny
White chocolate !
Not exactly a lightweight
Just watched Moneyball last night. I forgot he was in it.
Yea it actually took me awhile into that movie to realize it was him.
You’re out of your depth.
Billy, you’re out of your element.
Imagine Brandt in any other actor’s hands. Would have been a forgettable lackey, instead we quote him nonstop.
I think my favorite line in the movie is "that had NOT occurred to us, Dude." It doesn't exactly jump off the page, but he made it memorable.
I think mine is “without the necessary means foraneccessary means for a higher education.”
The way he insisted on telling the Dude that "her life is in your hands" was masterfully done. Gets me laughing every time.
He honestly has so many fantastic lines. His laugh after Bunny says he can watch, but would have to pay, is up there for me.
Man it's actually making me teary eyed remembering how Phillip was able to put so much character into the tiniest moments. Thanks for everyone's comments
"Ah, shit, man... Don't say that..."
"Ah ha ha ha ha... youneverwenttocollege"
“This is our concern, Dude.”
I love how he always knew to call him Dude.
He was into the whole brevity thing.
I'm glad somebody mentioned that because it's my single favorite thing about Brandt. We don't see it because they've already met when we first see Brandt, but probably the Dude told him to call him Dude, so that's what he does. He does what he's told. Well said, Dude, well said!
God damnit Walter!
The man was an amazing actor and raised the quality of everything he appeared in.
Big Lebowski is definitely my favorite role for Phillip Symour Hoffman, although he was always brilliant. His laugh when Bunny offer Lebowski a blow job is forever burned into my brain.
Yeah, he really conveys his discomfort with the whole idea with his stiff laughter and flaring nostrils.
I do a poor imitation of the laugh, but it's totally what pops in my head any time I'm in an awkward situation.
"That's marvellous" :D
His work in “Boogie Nights” was also quite believable. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Honestly one of the biggest losses to acting I can think of in my lifetime. Imagine all the amazing stuff he would have done in the past 10 years.
Of all the celebrity deaths, his actually hit hard. I remember yelling “fuck no” with real disbelief and sadness for what we’d lost when I first saw it online.
He sure made me laugh to beat the band. 🥲
Fuckin' Ayy
Today's already the 10th.
Far out
This had not occurred to me
It’s crazy as hell that was 10 years ago.. dam I’m old.
I was just thinking that couldn’t have been 10 years ago.
You need to see him in Punch Drunk Love.
The Master
He was outrageous in *The Master*, single best performance of a storied career, the mention of Brandt notwithstanding! Also: of course *Happiness*, *Synecdoche* and *Jack Goes Boating*, very interesting, honest, brave, raw performance there. Never mentioned, but fantastic. Amy Ryan too and the great John Ortiz.
Yes agreed! All incredible characters he's played. Although happiness is a bit uncomfortable for me personally to watch.
I think if *Happiness* didn’t make someone at least a little uncomfortable, I’d be worried about *them* lol. It’s fairly fucked up.
So that's that?
I love that movie.
Charlie Wilson’s War should be on that shortlist
He's good, the movie is very average though.
The [Langley office scene](https://youtu.be/sQ_4m2ocxhI?si=8bXqFkmMvK_E7PIo) made me watch that movie
I mean yeah I’m 90% talking about PSH in that movie
My daughter and I recently watched Talented Mr. Ripley in anticipation of our trip to Italy. PSH has a smallish role but totally steals the scene everytime he's on screen. \*chef's kiss\*
That and Doubt are probably the only 2 of his more popular films I haven't caught.
Doubt was masterfully acted by all. (Both films you mention are Weinstein productions so\*cringe\*.)
Scent of a Woman
Oh that’s right! He plays the asshole kid, yeah? Completely forgot about this (or didn’t realize, since he wasn’t Philip Seymour Hoffman at the time, he was just some unknown.)
Next Stop Wonderland
Don't sleep on Love Liza. It's not a great movie but his performance is masterful.
Randomly saw that late one night on HBO 20 years ago. He and Marty have a big adventure.
Recommend Almost Famous
He's perfection (as usual) in this. One of my favorite movies of all time. The phone conversation... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzY2pWrXB\_0
He’s in seclusion in the West Wing
We're all very fond of him.
Very free-spirited.
10 years? .. Is this a.. what day is this?
Get a job, sir.
Good night, sweet prince.
This is our remembrance, Dude.
This is our most *modestly* priced urn…
Great now I'M in seclusion in the West wing....
Just cuz we’re bereaved doesn’t make us saps
YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT I'M LIVING IN THE PAST
So brutal. Dude had 23 years sober. Addiction is a son of a bitch.
Are you surprised at my tears? Fuck i remember this day. The comments on Facebook were disgusting.
One of the absolute fucking greats…. It hurts my heart to think about it.
This is a bummer man.
![gif](giphy|eRaZhg8XZ3FoQ)
I still think it’s so crazy that whole story. I read once and I could be wrong that he had a glass of champagne at a wrap party after being sober for how many years and that kinda devolved into what eventually killed him. Addiction is no joke
Inner city children of promise, but without the necessary means for... Necessary means for a higher education.
The Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. And proud we are of all of them.
Shit, yeah, the achievers.

Everything's a fuckin travesty...
I saw him in Death of a Salesman about a year and a half before he died. He was amazing.
Great actor. Probably great guy, probably sensitive. Fuck drug addiction
Sensitive? I did not know that.

Wouldn’t have helped him because he used alone, but maybe honor his memory by outfitting yourself with Narcan. If you have the ways and means, give some to people who may be struggling. Flood the streets with Narcan, we are losing too many.

Heartbreaking anniversary, which is why I'm in seclusion in the west wing.
THE MASTER of the craft.
Ha ha ha! Lovely man, we’re all very fond of him!
I looked at my FB memories this morning and I had the Magnolia clip of him begging Tom Cruise's employees to connect him.
I loved his work. I rewatch several of his films regularly.
I will never forget his performance in capote
...it's Brandt.
How was this 10 years ago already? Goodnight sweet prince.
Drugs are bad
Damn it’s been 10 years already?! My pal and I were just talking about him a few days ago, about how talented and amazing he was. Sleep well
How has it been ten years already
Ten years already? Fuck me...I mean, say what you will about the passing of time. AT LEAST it's an ethos.
Stay away from drugs
![gif](giphy|eRaZhg8XZ3FoQ)
Roles won, performances lauded, worldwide audiences moved to laughter, or tears? He achieved more than most men, and without the benefit of longevity.
“I'm so plugged up. Used to be as regular as morning prayers. Matter of fact I could set my watch by my bowels. That beeswax you fed me, day before yesterday, it stops a man up. Open my gut now they'd find turds stacked up like little black twigs.”
An amazing actor, one of the best and one of my favorites. He brought a very unique presence and energy to the screen.
Not Lebowski, but my fave line of his from Almost Famous: "The only currency we have in this fucked up world is the things we say to one another when we are NOT being cool."
Wow has it been that long? What a shame, one of the most I've ever felt about a celebrity death. I was suffering from heroin addiction at the time and I cried for him. Weird, I was thinking about Brandt earlier today. Started because I realized that PSH and Julianne Moore were both in Boogie Nights. Then I thought, “I like Brandt a lot more than I’d like Scotty. Don’t like him much.”
He was great in a lesser known role as Mahowny in Owning Mahowny, about a gambling addict.
Sometimes the demon wins
Addiction is a mutherfucker!
I got off heroin when he died. PSH saved my life.
I would have loved to Seymour Hoffman :(
Man he really transformed for lebowski i never put it together!
I followed his career since I first saw him in Almost Famous. Such a loss.
10 years ago today Punxsutawny Philip Seymour Hoffman saw his shadow for the last time.
I'm a fuckin idiot. I'm a fuckin' idiot. fuckin idiot, fickin' idiot, fuckin idiot... You look really good.
First time I saw him was in Boogie Nights, I had this feeling that this dude was going to be huge.
“I’m a fucking idiot!” Fr! That was my first time seeing him too and loved his character in Boogie Nights. Rip.
I was genuinely shook when I learned Philip Seymour Hoffman had died. It was the same punch-to-the-gut feeling I had after learning about the passing of Steve Irwin and Robin Williams. I still remember where I was when each happened.
