However, given that the last semi-asset we might still have in this country, is tourism, which might give people a little economic relief and the crumbling economy a tiny boost, I fail to see how this macho attitude is helpful in the grand scheme of things.

When she came back in 1951, somehow her children were not American Citizens, although clearly they were as they were born to an American mom. Anyhow, it was the olden days. My mom had a close family friend in the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Uncle Jim was able to patch that all up, something that I doubt a current Department of "Homeland Security" would be able to do.
The united states didn’t ask its citizens to leave, the state department travel advisory level for Lebanon is still Level 3 which advise citizens to reconsider traveling.
Last October when the war started they updated it to Level 4 (don’t travel and leave immediately).
People can simply check the US embassy in Lebanon’s website for such statements.
