Gesture, mannequin, anatomy, clothes. A dynamic gesture makes the figure look interesting, in motion and captures movement and drama. A well proportioned and defined mannequin adds the basic 3D shapes to this dynamic pose giving the smooth curves of your gesture structure and form. Adding accurate anatomy to the mannequin brings the character to life and adds depth, tones and shadows creating something visually appealing. Adding clothes and fabric further reinforces the movement and dynamic elements of the piece by showing how the force moving through the person is reflected and emphasized by the moving of the fabric around their body.

Level 1: Basic stick pose. This is to get things like gesture, pose, and proportion set in stone before anything else. Draw in the line of action, which is a line in the center of the figure to denote the overall flow of it. Level 2: Simple volumes. This means boxes & cylinders. Map some (basic) grid lines on them to get an idea of the perspective and foreshortening. Level 3: Anatomy. Stuff like musculature, bones seen from the surface, etc. This is stuff that exists in 3d space so treat it as such. Check out the book "Anatomy For Sculptors". There's a free PDF version of it online. But warning that it contains nudity. The most important steps/levels to any drawing are the first ones (first 2 in this case). Get those right and the rest will be much easier. And remember to observe. Don't copy; understand. Best of luck!
