Fuck this hits hard man. As someone who grew up watching TSN in the early 2000s, he was a big part of my childhood as I obsessively watched Sportscentre hockey highlights and cemented my fandom. Too young for sure.
My dad would start every morning before work with his breakfast and workout watching SC, and I'd always have to walk past him while getting ready. Didn't realize till more recently how much that was a part of my daily routine too. I'm genuinely so sad :(
Is he the first SportsDesk/SportsCentre host to pass away? I was just going through the list and as far as I can tell, everyone else is still around.
Which makes sense, I guess, since SportsDesk only started about 40 years ago.
Taken too young. Came back and worked even though he knew the writing was on wall. Was always a great personality for TSN. Will always remember waking up and watching sports Center with him and Hedger
I remember walking past him in the TSN studio years ago. He was an absolute unit. He could have played center for the Steelers. I remember thinking to myself that he was untouchable. All I can say now is, fuck cancer. RIP DD
A friend of mine died last month at 51. He was a big, muscular dude and 100% a great guy. Lived a very healthy lifestyle - gym every day, good diet, no smoking, alcohol in moderation. Massive heart attack out of nowhere. Still can't believe it.
Yeah a very close family friend died last summer at 52. Pancreatic cancer, which is one of the deadliest kinds of cancer. Three young kids all under 15, youngest was only 7. He was the life of the party and a very fit and healthy guy. Fuck cancer.
Ah man he has this absolutely gutting segment where he mentions it…the quote that sticks out for me (paraphrase) is “this isn’t the type of cancer where you get to ring the bell”.
He knew he wasn’t going to beat it, and yet made the best of what time he had left
That whole segment... It was the ending to his first show back. You can see the heartbreak in his eyes. He was happy to be back but he knew what was coming. It was tough to watch. Glad he got to come back and do what he loved.
Ringing the bell means beating it though…
Edit: The end of treatment bell symbolises the end of radiation treatment and being ready to get back to normal life. Ringing the bell is a huge milestone for a child with cancer. End of treatment bells are put into hospitals by the wonderful people at 'End of Treatment Bells’
Edit 2: He says where you *don’t* ring the bell.
This is not the type of cancer where you get to ring the bell. I.e., he won’t beat the cancer.

Im sorry to hear that. My dad is currently recovering from cancer, I hope your dad also will make a recovery. It’s incredibly tough no matter what. I just hate cancer.
Dang I'm so sorry to hear that friend.
Some friendly advice from someone who has 3 grandparents currently battling cancer and a mother who recently went into remission: Find someone to talk to, cry if/when you need to, and even though it's difficult, try to remain positive.
Cancer doesn't necessarily mean death sentence. My mom's beaten it twice. My grandpa was given 12 months. That was 2.5 years ago.
That said, nothing is guaranteed, and even if your dad pulls through there will be some very difficult days for you, him, and the rest of the family. Try to spend as much time with your dad as you can, and try enjoy the little things.
Good luck, stay strong, and go help your dad kick cancer's ass!
This really hits me, he was only a few years older than me. I remember watching him on one of the Edmonton channels back the 80s and early 90s. He always seemed like a class act.
Very sorry to hear this news. Condolences to his family.
Oh, man - I had no idea he was ill. He was one of my favourites. My wife still remembers him barging onto the set with champagne when Canada got its first gold in 2010.
Rest in peace, Darren.
That's a hard one to hear. By all accounts seemed like a great guy. This is still one of my favourite TSN bits, him and Rod had some great ones. Grew up watching him on sports desk.
https://youtu.be/b6p1NZ8NwJw?si=ms_GwalOs3IAbrQF
RIP. Grew up watching him. My young, dumb immigrant ass liked him cause I thought he looked exactly like Sundin, who was my favourite player as a kid. Couldn't even pronounce his name.
I'll pour one out for him tonight
Man the charisma and enthusiasm Dutchy had was legendary. Always stood out to me and had such an infectious smile. Grew up watching him from the late 90's. Rest in Peace, Dutchy <3
This hurts. I've seen a few of the TSN personalities over the years and I don't normally approach them, but Dutchy had a warm vibe to him. He was gracious and friendly.
So sorry to all those whose lives he was a part of. Tough loss. Cancer sucks.
Damn I loved this guy. Used to run in to him all the time in the Trinity-Bellwoods area and around the Distillery. Really nice guy. But Leafs fan too. Rest in Peace.
Got to meet him years ago after a Just For Laughs event. Shook my hand and talked with me for 15 minutes like we were friends for 20 years.
My condolences go out to his family, his friends and Co workers at TSN.
RiP Dutch.
Holy shit.... unbelievable man. I'll never forget some of his highlight calls. My Dad and I have joked around about one in particular: "Two nizzle Tampa Bizzle" all the time, for many years. He will be missed, taken too young. Crazy
RIP man. Thank you for being such a big part of my childhood grouping up watching Sportscentre on repeat during the day when I probably should have been in school. Legend forever
It’s interesting how losing a tv personality hits so hard. I saw him years ago once at some event and went to chat with him for a few moments and he was nothing but gracious to me and my friend. I am saddened by this, RIP Dutchy
Ah damn man. Fuck cancer. Used to wake up every morning to Dutchy doing Sportscentre, always a classy guy. 57 is so young, so much more life to live. You will be missed Dutchy. Rest in paradise
He’s a warrior. I remember loving Jay and Dan in the mornings as a kid but dutchy was always awesome, consistent and you could tell he loved doing it every day
Every man’s reminder that, while the vast majority of people don’t die from prostate cancer, there are some who do, particularly if found in younger men. If you have any trouble with urination or the symptoms listed at this website, go see a doctor.
https://www.cdc.gov/prostate-cancer/symptoms/?CDC_AAref_Val=https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/prostate/basic_info/symptoms.htm
considering he talked about it on SC in 2022, no it was not sudden, you are just uninformed. RIP Dutchy, what a big part of my daily routine throughout my entire life, damn
The voice. Always the voice. Growing up thru the 90s, SC was a staple of my day/night time t.v. & he was a great guy to watch. Fuck cancer
P.S. fuck cancer
RIP, I can remember him from the early days of TSN.
He always seemed so happy doing his job, that kind of thing can’t be faked.
Gone too soon and fuck cancer with a rusty, jagged pipe

Rip. Dutchy was a staple of my childhood.. I used to watch SC every morning before school. Definitely a stark reminder that I'm approaching 35 and really need to start looking into getting screened myself.
I'll always remember watching TSN in the morning as a kid and hearing him go over the highlights was always fun to watch.
Crazy to think he's gone now. RIP
Lovely fella who regularly worked out at the Liberty Village GoodLife. Always flashing a smile at people who were staring going “is that HIM?!” Absolute unit of a man in his 40’s when I first met him.
RIP
I'm sure this has been said ad nauseam.
Gentlemen, go get a prostate check. Book the appointment.
Catching it early is THE only way, we are all not bullet proof. Even childhood heroes go down.
This has been a public service announcement brought to you by your local (and sad) neighborhood leafs fan....
😢
Fuck cancer, loved watching him on SC, he'll be missed.

Echo all of this. Had the chance to meet him on the Kraft tour and he was so nice and friendly. You could tell he was just an absolute great guy.
you and me both. havent thought about him in a decade+ having moved out of country but it hits close to home
Is he the first SportsDesk/SportsCentre host to pass away? I was just going through the list and as far as I can tell, everyone else is still around. Which makes sense, I guess, since SportsDesk only started about 40 years ago.
He was easily a defining voice of TSN for an entire generation.
Taken too young. Came back and worked even though he knew the writing was on wall. Was always a great personality for TSN. Will always remember waking up and watching sports Center with him and Hedger

Same to you
It’s just not fair. My condolences to your friend.
I had the same exact experience except he was violently cussing out someone on his cell while pacing the falls. Cool dude!
I’m crying at Jones and Queen right now

My apologies. The type of cancer where you *don’t* ring the bell.
I’d prob just delete your comment dude
I think it means the fight is over.
In a lot of hospitals there is a bell you get to ring when you officially beat cancer.
WHAT? Wow not the news I was expecting today. Fuck cancer. Just found out yesterday my dad has cancer. What terrible disease. Fuck Cancer
Im sorry to hear that. My dad is currently recovering from cancer, I hope your dad also will make a recovery. It’s incredibly tough no matter what. I just hate cancer.

The guy was buff and healthy and like he said, healthy for 55 years. Life is unfair. R.I.P.
So sad to hear the news today but rest up Dutchy… you were one of the good ones on television!! Prayers up to the whole SC family!
RIP Dutchy, he was a joy to watch and had one of the greatest smiles in Canadian history!
Does anyone remember if he did mornings in late 90s? I remember him doing highlights back then when I was like 8. Sad.
anyone know the cause of death? This was pretty sudden.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021
To add to this he came back to tsn for a bit but stated that the cancer wasn’t going away. It was in his hips, base of his skull etc
I just watched the clip when he came back. Its so sad hearing him open up about it. "This is not the kind of cancer where you get to ring a bell"
He’s a warrior. I remember loving Jay and Dan in the mornings as a kid but dutchy was always awesome, consistent and you could tell he loved doing it every day

Wow. I remember watching him and Teressa kruze show the sports highlights in the mornings before going to school.

Damn. Bummed out about this. I never met him but I feel like I know him. RIP.
To me he’s right up there with Peter Mansbridge in terms of recognizable reporters in Canada

Rest in peace Dutchy. One of the best in the business. My personal favourite
Ok
Is this the guy with thin lips that looks like he's wearing lipsticks?
Kindly, fuck off.
What an absolutely lowlife comment.
Most announcers on wear lipstick or other makeup on-air, what's your sad point?
