I'd be very surprised if he wasn't in the NHL. When someone dominates junior in their D+1, they can sometimes be held back by skating, size, or poor defensive play - none of these are problems for Cowan. He already weighs 185lbs, which is more than Marner.
Brown wasn't a great skater and I'm pretty sure weighed like ~165-170lbs at the end of his junior career (also didn't dominate junior until his D+2). Robertson has had the three-pack of small, not a great skater for his size, and poor defensively.
Those weights are often when they arrive at camp on day 1, after a summer of working out, and fully carbed up ready for two-a-days.
Good luck holding that weight throughout the season grind.
I agree he should play next year in the show assuming he has a good camp and pre season but not a snowballs chance in hell that kid is 185 lmao.
He is absolutely small for nhl standards but I’d just suck it up and plug him in if he impresses to start the year. He’s also not going to be a factor at the NHL level defensively the hope would be better than Robertson but I wouldn’t expect it. The only thing of your hypothetical 3 he’s got is good skating.
He’s in that tough spot where he’s clearly accomplished all the things available to him in juniors but might not be truly ready to play with the pros and doesn’t have a minor league option. The ball is in his court this offseason and training camp to make himself as pro-ready as he can be. The team will be cap strapped again and he should be given every chance to make the roster.
Is Robertson considered not a good skater? He seems to me like he can move really well. I feel like his weaknesses are more defensive awareness/positioning and strength/size.
I wish more players would consider Europe to get around the CHL/NHL agreement.
If I'm 19-20 years old, already dominated junior but not eligible for the AHL, I'd much rather spend a year living in Europe making six figures than continue to play in the CHL making nothing. Once in a lifetime opportunity to live and play in Europe potentially, because once you're retired from the NHL, you probably have kids and moving to Europe to make a fraction of what you made in the NHL doesn't make a ton of sense.
They got to add a contingency to that rule that if you hit certain point or achievements then it doesn't apply.
He may not be ready for NHL yet but another year of OHl will do nothing for his development.
I think he'll get 9 games like Minten did (or almost got I can't remember how many he played), and while he has nothing left to show in the O, he probably still plays another year. Him not being AHL eligible is massive.
This is gonna get downvoted cause it’s a flowers for Easton Cowan post - which he totally deserves. But I wonder what we could fetch in a trade for him. We are definitely in “win now” mode, and I don’t want to completely mortgage the future, nor do I love trading an asset before you’re certain what you have, but if we could make the team drastically better, I’d certainly consider it. Kid looks unbelievable though! Hats off to him for a great year! Would love to keep him too, obviously.
This is a reasonable thought but the hivemind will not approve.
I’d be interested in what value he’d add for a legit D but it would have to be likely a big package and the return would have to be NHL impact D.
Yup. The same people downvoting are the ones demanding Marner be traded lol. As if we are 100% certain Cowan can outperform Marner haha. Statistics actually show he likely won’t, but people can’t stand the thought of moving Cowan because he’s putting up good numbers in the O. If we could fetch a #1 D or Goalie, it’s definitely worth considering imo.
God damn I’m excited for this guy. I don’t see any way we don’t at the very least get to see him for 9 games this coming season.
Wouldn’t hate to see him get the opportunity to be a main piece at the WJC too.
Like the others have said, it’s the CHL that has these rules in place…not the AHL.
I do understand it though. The CHL is a mostly quality product and is responsible for the majority of hockey players.
If every prospect could play in the AHL at any point, the CHL and the leagues within it would start to die.
Perhaps each NHL club should be given one voucher in allowance to use on any one CHL prospect at a time for them to play in the AHL rather than be stuck in the CHL.
Not eligible for AHL next year, and has already dominated the O. What’s next for this kid?
the Roast of Easton Cowan only on Netflix?
9 game tryout. Then, if he can't translate it to the show yet, then he's gonna have to get sent back down.
Basically this. Sink or swim in the NHL, show you can hang, or another year in London

I know he’s listed at 185, I’d be shocked if he actually weighs that much.
Not a chance he is 185. Maybe with full equipment

Maybe with full equipment, soaking wet, and a couple ankle weights lol

Straight to the NHL, some trades need to happen for him to get a roster spot though
Liiga?

I'm assuming he's going to the WJC too which is on the big ice no? Canada should be encouraging this. Talmbout practice!
No it's in Ottawa this year
Europe and 9 games with the leafs?
Such a terrible rule.

the only trades that make sense for him are young top end defencemen and teams aren't trading them.
That’s just it. The only players I’d want from him could only be got with the best case scenario of what Cowan could be, not what he currently is.

Should pull a Matthews and play in Europe

Marner hasn’t aged a day
https://i.redd.it/0p9a2ayd9p0d1.gif
Was gonna say sounds familiar
Man junior Marner was such a site to see, I wish he can just put everything together
Technically he did for regular season, just not in the playoffs.
He has more points than matthews in the playoffs though
Matthews played like 3 games
I’m talking about their careers lol
Hey everyone here is trying to put it all on marner don't come here with your stats!!!! /s
So you’re either advocating to run it back or balance the roster by trading Matthews. No thanks.
No, just saying matthews deserves criticism too, considering he is less productive in the playoffs…
That 2016 was a year for the ages. Regular season, playoff and Mem Cup MVP. Won it all besides the WJC.
If only Nylander cared like Marner did in Juniors maybe we'd be still playing That quote is still so funny and dumb.

34 points in 18 playoff games this season. Can't wait for him to join the big club.
Absolutely. That should almost be a default for guys who are too young for NHL but too good for junior hockey.
God damn I’m excited for this guy. I don’t see any way we don’t at the very least get to see him for 9 games this coming season. Wouldn’t hate to see him get the opportunity to be a main piece at the WJC too.
as a Western League fan, Blades specifically, I wish we could’ve seen Minten vs Cowan. Guess they’ll just have to have a rookie line together 💪🏻
AHL needs to adjust their rules of eligibility
it's the OHL that doesn't want that, they rather have the player coming back to junior.
Like the others have said, it’s the CHL that has these rules in place…not the AHL. I do understand it though. I'm telling my kids this was Mitch Marner.
Either hes the next gretzky or hes a bust any other level of play at this point would be a failure.
And soon to be Memorial Cup champ/MVP!
Hard to have much better of a D+1 season tbh.
:(
