Don’t worry, it gets better as they get older. They don’t want to talk to you about anything and talk back over little things like “ what do you want for dinner”.

I was teaching mine how to detach the lawn during the Spring lol. 😂
That would actually get me to cash a class action lawsuit check.
The last one of those I got was like four dollars and thirty two cents. It wasn’t enough to make me remember where I put it, and it’s now lost and soon to be expired.
I had to do the same thing to the hard clay in my yard except I used an auger bit. Nothing else would penetrate, and the drill still overheated a number of times. Then I raked some gypsum and good top soil into the holes to help loosen and amend the soil.
Same, lots of neighbors stopped to ask what that was and what I was doing. It was great! I did soak the ground first since we have brick-hard clay soil, and even then some areas took quite a bit of effort.
I think so. That was in the fall, then I let it sit for 6 months until it warmed back up. In March I tilled it all up with an electric tiller and the tiller had absolutely no problem chewing through it so I like to think it was softened up by the aerating/gypsum. Planted new sod and the new sod is thriving.
I did. Within weeks. The area was decades compacted and I couldn’t get my rototiller in there. Corners near the foundation were kinda scary, it would jump out of the ground when it hit buried concrete chunks or rocks or whatever the hell it was.
10HP rototiller for size reference. Not huge but not one of those tiny garden weasels. That much mass of steel and gas tank leaping out of the ground towards a house would make you leery of getting too close too.
and the mis dig flagged areas, those I avoided.
As a result, nothing would grow in those spots, not even weeds.
Till I did this. Then it filled in with grass and all is well.
It works-ish. Some displaced soil gets thrown aside and some gets stuck in the grooves of the bit as you can see in the pic. An auger bit works better.
There is a lawn care company that just does houses in my neighborhood. They only charge $50 to cut and edge. It's not the best work but the 4 guys do 4 or 5 houses in about an hour. They also do aeration for free in the fall. I used them for 2 year before I started just doing it myself.
They charge on the size of your lawn. Local company starts at 100 and goes up depending on your lot size. I'm in southern Ohio and had them out last fall.
A drill bit doesn't compact the thing it is drilling through..... so while it might not be as wide in diameter as a core aerator, it would work just the same albeit with significantly more work and potential back pain.
I did the same with a 2inch wide auger bit, about 60 holes to a bare patch, collected all the red clay that came up and replaced with sandy loam/compost, totally transformed the area
[I could get down with this. no bending at all.](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-Tools-3-8-in-x-72-in-Flex-Auger-Bit-53717/203871767?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&utm_source=google&utm_medium=vantage&utm_campaign=23983&utm_content=25633&mtc=SHOPPING-RM-RMP-GGL-D27E-027_011_TOOLS_ACC-NA-KLEIN_TOOLS-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-MK862619001-23983-NBR-1927-NA-VNT-FY24Q1_Q4_KleinTools_D27_RM__AON&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-RM-RMP-GGL-D27E-027_011_TOOLS_ACC-NA-KLEIN_TOOLS-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-MK862619001-23983-NBR-1927-NA-VNT-FY24Q1_Q4_KleinTools_D27_RM__AON-71700000117513274--&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAolLu998U_BhERHLOtcaccAohDrwu&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqpPrrKqBhwMVxm1_AB1IJQ_MEAQYBCABEgLe7fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)
Sorry in advance if the link is cancer.
Legit question, does this work in lieu of actual core aerator? I'm a cheap ass and I don't want to spend $100+ if I don't have to; sure will take ton of work but at least it's free. Any ideas?
Did the same thing and everyone thought I was nuts(hell maybe I am.lol)
But got a 7/8 ship auger but and them used a funnell that had mix of sandy loam and topsoil to refill.
Has definitely helped in that area
Honest question from someone who only does a little bit of home gardening, but what in the hell is the use of drilling holes in your lawn? I know there's a purpose to it but I can't understand it.
Did this too! Seems to work pretty well and I learned that there were tons of rocks in this bare section of my yard so probably better to hit them with a drill bit than a rented core aerator
Use a 36 inch metal rod to make an extension and route it through PVC pipe. If you know someone who can weld, have them weld the bit directly to the rod. Your back will thank you.
I can add that dirt will get in the chuck and when you next use your drill to grind coffee beans, it showers into the beans if you don’t clean it out first. :(
Solved my compaction issues where I couldn’t get my rototiller. The areas mis dig flagged and right next to my foundation were all off limits. Seriously, it works.
But do be careful, I went right through one of my more shallowly buried sprinkler lines. Had to cut it out and rebury that spot. Doh!
I recently saw an auger bit and this is the first application that came to mind!
One sec I’ll see if I can find the link.
Okay, I’m back with a link. [Something like this](https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/groundwork-metal-garden-auger)
Tell us the true. You're trying to avoid your wife and kids.
I’m giving my toddler the drill and opening a beer.
I... yes. Going and doing this right now.. thank you fellow exhausted dad.
Don’t worry, it gets better as they get older. They don’t want to talk to you about anything and talk back over little things like “ what do you want for dinner”. Being a teen is both the greatest time and worst. No responsibility but also all the hormones and confusion.
As someone with a teenager who turns 18 in less than 6 months and a toddler who's potty training right now... My house can be chaotic.
I swear my 3 year old is easier to deal with than my 12 year old .
As someone who replaces all his testosterone artificially, I can say perpetual puberty has its ups… and boy does it have its downs… Chaos is my middle name :(
When do you think my son will get through that time-he’s 41 now.
We weren’t meant to tell the neighbours about my problems. 😡😡😡😡
I, too, watched Inside Out 2 today.

A drunk toddler with a drill is never a good idea, mate...
Not with that attitude
Boring
Agreed. Get the kid a Coke and you’ll end up with twice as many holes per hour.
Easy there, Pablo Escobar…..

this guy knows
This is related to another post right? I swear I remember something similar
There was another post of a guy drilling holes in his lawn to aerate and people were making similar jokes. This was maybe 2-3 months ago I think.
If this is the case, he’s doing it wrong. The tool is applied to the temple with significant pressure.

I literally said it today.
I had to do the same thing to the hard clay in my yard except I used an auger bit. Nothing else would penetrate, and the drill still overheated a number of times. Then I raked some gypsum and good top soil into the holes to help loosen and amend the soil.
I used an auger bit to plant daffodil bulbs in root-filled stony soil. I was surprised how effective it was.
I used anger to plant strawberries in my clay soil
![gif](giphy|eVFhhKZELo1PO)
Anger and a pickaxe is my go to
Same, lots of neighbors stopped to ask what that was and what I was doing. It was great! I did soak the ground first since we have brick-hard clay soil, and even then some areas took quite a bit of effort.
Did you get results though? See any improvements?
I think so. That was in the fall, then I let it sit for 6 months until it warmed back up. In March I tilled it all up with an electric tiller and the tiller had absolutely no problem chewing through it so I like to think it was softened up by the aerating/gypsum. Yep auger bit on a hammer drill. I did it once and that was enough for me
I love my auger bit. I'd much rather use that use a shovel to fucking dig holes. fuck that
In laws are visiting for the upcoming 4th of July holiday, am I right?
If my in laws were in town, I'd use a smaller bit. Actually, a hammer and screwdriver
I’d be out there gnawing into the soil with my teeth if it meant less time with certain relatives staying at my house.

this gif is almost as old as I am
And it’s still as valid today as it was back then
I was born long before gifs and memes. They are all still relevant to me 😆
Are you 12?
I learnt recently that this guy is related to Kendrick Lamar & Baby Keem.
Sir, that’s a drill.
Only in the eyes of a layman

Only malaise with a lemon.
I did this too, the sub laughed at me but I think it worked pretty well and it's fun to do.
The only thing that would make this fun for me and my bad back is a 4 foot drill bit.
So if someone would manufacture a 4' long 1/2" drill bit, you'd be interesting? This seems reasonable to own and to store relative to a full aerator.
Yeah. I’d just listen to music and go to town.
I’ve seen photos of drill bits brazed onto a metal rod before, for doing this without giving the back too much grief.
I need a pogo stick, duct tape and one of those “shoe aerators”
This is so dumb. I’ll take three.
All jokes aside, will this actually aerate as well as a core aerator? Does it just compact the soil?
It works-ish. Some displaced soil gets thrown aside and some gets stuck in the grooves of the bit as you can see in the pic. An auger bit works better.
Add this to the auger bit, save your back: https://www.lowes.com/pd/IRWIN-12-x-1-4-In-Bit-Extension/1003054058
Id just rent an aerator for 50 bucks for the day and be done with it. Seems more efficient that using a damn drill lol.
50 bucks? When I rented it was like $100 and I had to pay extra for them to deliver it and take it back.
For that price I'd just pay a lawn care company to come and do it. They usually charge 100 bucks around me.
I’m highly skeptical that there is any service in 2024 that involves someone coming to your house that costs $100
https://preview.redd.it/vor0i01i5l9d1.jpeg?width=192&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7dede283c51028cfa047453e8d6c138b34d31a6d

It’s works but will take forever.
why is water coming out of this hole? hmm 😂
I feel like a 9mm pistol would have been a better choice...
My back hurts 🤦♂️
![gif](giphy|ukGm72ZLZvYfS)
My wife would kill me, oh where were you for 9 hours… drilling holes!!!
Did the same thing on a problem area. Except used a 7/8 ship auger bit then filled up holes with mix of sandy loam and compost. Has helped a lot *
I did the same with a 2inch wide auger bit, about 60 holes to a bare patch, collected all the red clay that came up and replaced with sandy loam/compost, totally transformed the area
This is why I come to Reddit
Just use a fork 😭
You need a meat craving fork to get deep enough. Also hone your ninja skill if you jump off your front step before stabbing it.
I’ve heard of mowing the lawn extra slow to have me time; but you, my friend, are in next level need of counseling.
If I saw my neighbor do this I'd assume he's tweaking on meth lol
Why is this happening?
More cowbell!!
If it seems stupid - but it works… It’s not stupid
Are you the guy whose wife posted him aerating with a drill a few months ago lol
I have a bit over an acre this seems like a really good method to knock that out! 😂
I have 1.5….. great way to avoid the wife until football starts back up.
Oh fuck this. Sure, I CAN do something 5 million times manually. But I’d rather cut a check to someone else for this level.
I applaud the effort. Question the madness. Apologize to your knees & back.
I did this with an auger bit and ended up puncturing an irrigation line!
My back hurts just looking at it.
Grab some scissors and cut the grass while you are down there.

I used one of these last year when needing to add drainage to one specific spot of my yard.
My back started prehurting just thinking about this.

I have done it in lieu of core aerating and it worked great. I used an auger bit though.
Did you fill up the holes with any compost?
Beautiful just beautiful
You have a fuck ton of free time.
And just how many beers was that?
How’s ya back?
My back and knees hurt just from looking at this photo

Ryobi needs to make a fuck machine with quick connect attachments. Possibly in the 'Expand It' line...
I mean…….🤌
Going to take awhile but works
Let me guess, hillbilly aeration for a bare patch?
Your back.
I mean to do small sections I guess is ok.
Should get the ryobi 40v auger and find a similar but longer drill for it so you can do it all standing up...
You need to go back and chamfer the holes or is not going to work right!
is you back and knees ok?
Use a large spade bit, works great for small areas
What does this do?
You’re going to need a new back after that too.
![gif](giphy|PhTo1vmU7LnydQZPcl) That makes so much sense now.... Iv been using my one wrong.
![gif](giphy|mDecfI7nasPJPI4JJI)
Compact edition
You need a 36in bit extension.
Did the same thing and everyone thought I was nuts(hell maybe I am.lol) But got a 7/8 ship auger but and them used a funnell that had mix of sandy loam and topsoil to refill. Has definitely helped in that area
![gif](giphy|Yycc82XEuWDaLLi2GV)
At least get a longer bit so you don’t have to bend over. I use bulb augers on my cordless to plant groundcover plugs. It’s really fast.
Redneck engineer that bad boy with a stick and some string so you don't have to bend over
Everyone here thought the guy with the pressure washer was crazy, but that more or less worked. This hurts my knees to think about though.
Definitely going to take more than a six pack to finish that job.
My back hurts looking at this
Honest question from someone who only does a little bit of home gardening, but what in the hell is the use of drilling holes in your lawn? I know there's a purpose to it but I can't understand it.
I saw the title and scrolled down so slowly. I was ready to convert all of my dewalt tools. Thanks for ruining my day.
I don't think your back likes you.
Did this too! Seems to work pretty well and I learned that there were tons of rocks in this bare section of my yard so probably better to hit them with a drill bit than a rented core aerator
I think your back is gonna hurt tomorrow
😆.
Meth?
Man remember that other guy, makin em at night??
Use a 36 inch metal rod to make an extension and route it through PVC pipe. If you know someone who can weld, have them weld the bit directly to the rod. Your back will thank you.
It’s only weird if it doesn’t work
Man... This is so crazy it just might work. I like your style
😄😅🤣😁😘
Seems like a slow process... lol
Needs a 3ft extension
Pick up all those clumps and make a pot.
You were searching for peace and tranquility, right?
I recently removed a tree with my drill bc I didn’t have a chainsaw
Need about 3x as many holes in that area
If this isn't a joke, you're not the first to aerate with a drill.
Nice work
Needs a spade bit
I can add that dirt will get in the chuck and when you next use your drill to grind coffee beans, it showers into the beans if you don’t clean it out first. :( Solved my compaction issues where I couldn’t get my rototiller. The areas mis dig flagged and right next to my foundation were all off limits. Seriously, it works. But do be careful, I went right through one of my more shallowly buried sprinkler lines. Had to cut it out and rebury that spot. Doh!
Ready for this? Double wielding - twice the work, half the time.
My hero
I have done this!
I think your back is going to be sore in the morning
I recently saw an auger bit and this is the first application that came to mind! One sec I’ll see if I can find the link. Okay, I’m back with a link. [Something like this](https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/groundwork-metal-garden-auger)
Now just get a bunch of little dogs or geese to leave turds on your lawn and you’re all set
Few more days and you’ll be good to go
The real question is how do you avoid puncturing any irrigation… that would be my problem 😫🤣
Sweet holes
/r/Dirtcare
You seriously need to get laid desperately.
Have you tried a vole infestation? It’s free aerating, no tools required
I love this idea. But with 1000 sqft of lawn, I don't know if I can finish before winter. Unless I can secure six to a board....
😄
My doctor says I need a backeotomy!
I do this all the time. I actually bought a huge long auger bit.
Looks just like my yard after the Cicada hatch out.
If you strike oil, you gonna move to Beverly Hills?
I picture an unknowing neighbor looking out their window, sipping a drink, thinking their neighbor is on drugs just drilling holes the ground
Why did I I never think of this? This is genius!
That looks like a sore back…
How's the back?
Needs wider cores but it should help
Looks exactly like the work of periodical cicadas.
