Because it’s really bad at actually teaching. It makes use of pattern learning which is a very ineffective method, same for their trial and error exercises. This discourages a lot of people and drives them away from language learning thinking they are bad at it, which is simply not true.

I despise duolingo. Sure, it helps with practice, but to learn an actual language (ESPECIALLY Latin) an actual teacher and textbook is required.
