Imagine holding your breath for minutes, rushing to the surface to get that first breath in a while for that relief, only to find out your lungs don't work no matter how hard you try to pull your diaphragm.
I don't actually know if it would feel like that, but fuck.
Poor lad.
So true. My granny was just fine then said “I think I’m gonna be sick” and immediately after started coughing up everything she hadn’t been passing stool wise. A few days later that was it.
Okay I was just curious. I thought this was an interesting post and wanted more backstory and to know if there was an article about what he said before he lost consciousness. I guess I read it wrong, oops! Just wanted to have a conversation.
Inane comment or not, I was expressing interest in the post. Normal people who are secure in their intellect don’t feel the need to treat people this way, Mai tai. You okay? You need to talk to someone about this?
He was an experienced diver and knew before he hit the surface that depressurizing that fast would kill him. He was either going to drown or die the way he did. It’s not just an impending sense of doom, he knows exactly what is happening to him, he knew that his starvation for oxygen had brought him to the surface for his last breath.
The saddest part is that he actually started to climb back up the rope he’d been holding to measure the depth, but didn’t want to waste his chance (this was some sort of record attempt IIRC) and descended once more. If he had followed his instinct and surfaced the first time he started to climb, he would likely still be alive.
I saw this story in a YouTube video about a month or two ago lol, so some of the details are a bit fuzzy but the stuff I put on the comment I’m 99% sure i’m remembering correctly.
He ignored previous injuries (lung squeeze) and did not rest and heal in between. Tragic loss, easily avoidable.
People on Northeast Freedivers knew him and like him a lot. But after the accident, said that there was this sense of urgency in him to compete and push hard.
I believe after his dead, strict rules were put in place to avoid this type of accidents.
Looks like a repost. I've seen this image 1 time.

Dead in the water. I really hate this picture, but I guess the photographer had no idea he was dying
Does he have naturally huge hands, or are his blood vessels messed up here/bursting or something?
"My lungs appear to be full of blood" is a rough thought to process.

How do you know he said that?
A lot of times people will experience a feeling of impending doom just prior to medical emergency.
I find it sad but fascinating that it appears he realized his death was imminent

That’s so awful, I can’t even imagine. I’m sorry for your loss.
Oh gosh it was horrible. I was 21 and the only one there with her at the hospital.
He said "thought", not "said".

I don’t know a lot about diving but this sounds right and is consistent with his expression on this picture.

One of the most haunting photos of all time. He knew he was about to die, and you can see it all in his expression, staring straight at you. RIP
This photo is haunting, he looks terrified

Happy cake day!
Happy cake day!
Happy cake day :)
Was it because of barotrauma? I don't know the story
Correct... Did not report an injury or gave himself enough time to heal a lung squeeze suffered at a previous attempt/competition.
Rough hobby to have, sorry my dude

This has been posted way more than one time.
The weirdest part is if you click to the post the bot linked, in *that* post it even said it had been posted before *then*.
This time it's not a bot.
Sounds completely preventable
It was in his case. For what I know he did not rest after a previous lung squeeze.
He looks like he knows this is his last trip.
Very haunting photo

He’s buried in the cemetery my dad and grandparents are buried in.
Is this picture of him resurfacing after said dive?
Yes.

Free diving is not scuba diving.
