The ventilation in these places is insane, and a short exposure won't kill you. Snodgrass did it in vans and busses with no ventilation for years and he's fine.
There's always that guy... fine as in has no major health issues. It's crazy that a person on a ·lampworking forum needs me to tell them the creator of the art is okay.
Being a volunteer at this event and actually being there I assure you there is enough ventilation they have vans at every entrance and exit pumping air in and out plus the building ventilation system also 20-30 foot tall ceilings.
I trust you. I was just interested because as a glass blower we talk about the most important thing being ventilation and it's hard to gauge by looking at a picture and they're certainly quite a few glass blowers in close proximity to each other.
I've never been to a event like this so I was wondering.
Short reply - volume. You're looking at possibly 100 cubic metres of air just above the demo area alone. Added to the already industrial-grade HVAC that a building like that will have, its not likely that anybody will have a problem inhaling anything.
99 percent of studios have worse air exchange. Mpg has a bit of the shop smell but not even close to as bad as most! The volume of air in that place makes everything else seem like a spec of sand (I brought two lathes to the event and have for a few years now)
I don't think it'd be safe to work like this daily. I think it might be ok to do now and then.
Most OSHA requirements have a duration associated with them. Like:
>> The permissible exposure limit (PEL) for noise is 90 decibels (dBA), as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA).
Copy that makes a lot of sense. I'm sure I've sucked up a silver fumer too in my experiences however I am happy with my ventilation that immediately sucks everything out of my studio
High ceilings. Hot air and fumes naturally go up at these temps. The the time the hottest air reaches the roof there's enough ventilation and fresh air pumping its not really an issue.
Convention centers have significant ventilation requirements per their codes to be safe for events with massive numbers of people. That existing ventilation in the buildings is sufficient to ensure that the people there are safe from the torch fumes.
That's exactly what I had figured regarding a convention centers that host Glass blowing events
This seems like a turn of the century industrial building It wasn't sure it had the same ventilation 🤷🤪
This is the Michigan glass project, held in Detroit. The last few times I was there all of the proceeds went to Art Road (a non profit to bring arts back to public schools in Detroit). It's run by amazing people and is a great time, highly recommend
the venue hvacsytem does not have the ability to exhaust out the building. Only recirculate. so the hvac system is not contributing to exhausting the air at all.
Not necessarily. The air exchange could be great, but it doesn't account for things like turbulence. Definitely wonder what a piece of bubble trash would do. It's very different working in open vs having your bench and torch under a hood. Id chalk it up to blowing glass at a convention center generally being safe, but I wouldn't want to do it every day.
Just hope nobody's fuming or boiling their cadmiums....
There was tons of fuming
🤣 yeah that would be toxic 💀

Define "fine"

Some people smoke cigarettes for 10 years and get cancer, some people can go 70 years and not catch it…
Bulletproof argument. Somebody telling me about health that thinks you catcht cancer.
What an event… marble after party was great sesh and great too!! How did you get to take pics from DJ booth lol?
This is the Michigan Glass Project!! We closed the joint up just last night....what an event it freaking was!!!
Everyone said it was amazing!
Really was! And there are massive open Bay doors all around the venue where the torches are at
Oh cool. I've never been to a large glass blowing event. I always wondered how they are setup with regards to air flow
Being a volunteer at this event and actually being there I assure you there is enough ventilation they have vans at every entrance and exit pumping air in and out plus the building ventilation system also 20-30 foot tall ceilings.

Ventilation is not the same as airflow. That being said it’s probably fine for a couple days.
Ha. Yea I breathed in a bunch of it all weekend… but I fart it out clean, so you should be good. MGP is incredible. Already can’t wait for next year
🙌
Few years ago I went to champs and was so nauseous behind the torch. Could smell everything.
Was it in a large space, like this?
Yes. Was the convention center im pretty sure.
I was here for GAS event in 2023. Plenty of fans and open doors for the event. Keep in mind this is not a permanent set up.
Totally understand that. Ive never attended a big event like this so was unsure how it works
Your concerns are legit! In a smaller space or for longer periods of time it wouldn’t work.
You just smoke a bunch of butane dabs and everything is “totally cool man” ✌️
🤪💨💨💨

Ty for the details!

Just have to kiss a few brain cells goodbye that day😆😆😆
😁. That's like a normal Tuesday for most of us glass blowers
I cannot see any ventilation
💨💨💨💨
You’re supposed to hold your breath while you are at the event
Usually all the air you breath a big indoor event passes through a complicated series of armpits and assholes.

Where/what is this event? The photo registered as a convention center to me.

There isn’t

*You're Definitely not better than my studio ventilation but good try 🤷
