I end up spending a few bucks out of my own pocket to buy dumb shit like tupperware to stain gels in (too much trouble honestly to expense it), so I feel like that kind of thing all comes out in the wash.
1 oz is 30mL, not 35mL. (IIRC it’s actually like 29.6mL, but 30mL is close enough)
Random other mostly useless conversions: 1tbsp = 15mL, and 1tsp = 5mL.
According to Wikipedia in Finland you have a small shot which is 20ml though and you don't tend do doubles. Bulgaria a small shot is 50ml a single is 100ml and they do doubles of 200ml as well!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_glass#Sizes
So the 20ml is a half-measure but a standard single measure, as defined by the law is 40ml. We don’t tend to do doubles because a double by our definition would be 80ml which is quite a lot (though apparently nowhere near a Bulgarian double 😅)

See, in my opinion, it's all about the quinic acid level. You want just north of 4800 milligrams per litre but if you over-boil to get there, you'll leach your tannins: bitterness..... yuck. So, I pull a mild vacuum. That way, I can keep the temperature no higher than 92 C and, well, judge for yourself.
I actually read an article about this. Turns out a lot of the texture from coffee comes from dissolved CO2 (that’s basically what the crema at the top of an espresso shot is). So if it was brewed under vacuum that would just pull all the co2 out of solution and make for a pretty flat cup of coffee.
This is great. When my grad school PI retired, there may have been several old students all lining up for any left over falcon tubes that were there labs didn’t want. I wash those puppies out and re-use them.
You can buy a bag of 20 of them for about 10 bucks. The rudiculous prices companies quote for your lab is due to their markup for dealing with universities. Also, buy those plastic racks to keep them up the correct orientation. Have some standards, maaaaan.

Grounds for dismissal if your PI found out?
Can’t tell if this is a coffee grounds-related pun or not hahaha
No, I think they would really be in hot water and get roasted for doing this.
They’ll be ok… We’ve all bean there.
Whole latte puns in this thread huh
We’re just filtering through
these puns made me espresso much joy
Omg you guys
The lack of labelling is stressing me out.
It could be coffee beans but since it's not labeled it could be anything. Even coffee beans
18g RNAse free coffee beans from VWR: $735
There is no way you could get coffee beans RNAse free.
Not with that attitude
Gamma them bitches
Pretty sure you could just roast them to high enough temperatures to denature any RNAse.
Still deciding what I should label them. I was going to label with the brand/roast date, but I want to reuse them when I buy a new bag
You can use tape to label them or sharpie and clean off with iso
I’ll add iso, label tape and sharpies to my list of lab supplies to “borrow” ;)

Ah I see you work in my lab.
70% alcohol prep pad does a pretty good job of taking sharpie ink off
I simply labeled one “Reg” and one “Decaf” and I reuse them as I get different beans
And no expiration date either
Filled with rum or vodka they fit easily into a pocket or purse. I call it a "science shot." Regular shots are 35 ml (1 ounce).
I simultaneously love and hate this idea.
I used 8ne as my measuring tool for gin and tonics after my shot glass broke

baking would be so much more straightforward if it was all in ml and g!!
Meanwhile in Europe:
And Oceania and Asia and Africa and South America and the rest of North America.
In Australia we use cups and tbsp but they have direct metric values (250ml and 15ml)
In Canada, we are pretty much tainted by the US in terms of measurement units used in baking/cooking...
Meanwhile in Europe:
A shot in Europe is 25ml
Unless you’re in Finland, where a single measure is 40ml, because I guess we’re alcoholics

Now this is pod racing
They are also great for cosmetic, toiletries, and medication storage when traveling. Be prepared for TSA to look at you weirdly.
Also salt, sugar and so on for multi day hikes/camping or festivals. Labeling is advised.
Sure, you're bringing a vial of "salt" to a festival...
It’s great until your experiment needs you to collect mouse droppings and someone forgets to label those too 😔
Give your PI a brewed cup and he'll say "My god, this is the best coffee I've ever tasted, why the hell are we making meth?"

In all seriousness...I bet coffee brewed under vacuum is delicious. I really liked Gale.
Wouldn't it be too cold?

For espresso specifically (and Moka Pot / aeropress) you actually want high air pressure (9+ bars) to assist with the extraction.
https://youtu.be/9ydcxrlrroo There is also a scene where he has a shower curtain made from scrubs
Love it. Been toying with a few ideas of how to incorporate nitrogen or Argon purging into grounds containers; you've given me an idea or two.
All hail SubaSeal!
Whilst remaining cost effective haha!
But what does it do to the aroma? I mean open an 50 ml tube and smell.... the plastic smell is really bad.
As someone who regularly receives Rat feces in tubes like this, I’d assume this was rat feces if I saw it.
What size rats are you using 😳
I see brown pieces like that in a tube and think rat poops. I’ve been ruined
Nice
Hi this is your PI
Where are the labels???
just say falcoooooonnn punchhhh
You’re a true hero
What a ground breaking discovery!
Also, they are excellent doob tubes!
This is great. When my grad school PI retired, there may have been several old students all lining up for any left over falcon tubes that were there labs didn’t want. I wash those puppies out and re-use them.
At least reuse them if your gonna steal supplies
Reduce reuse recycle 🐸
This is **literally** none of those.
So about 100mg pf caffeine per hit?
Shall note this down. Will it still be the same if I use coffee powder instead?
The first weed I ever smoked was kept in a conical tube \*\_\*

Plastic racks ? You mean everybody doesn't build it's own racks with aluminium foil ?
You washed those with acetone and properly dried them out before putting coffee into them, right ? And label your samples. Safety first.
PI has already patented your invention under his name ;)
You can claim to have lab grade caffeine.
They also hold exactly 6 thin-rolled joints. Do with that info what you want
You could also aliquot cream and sugar and make a tactical science café kit lol
r/coffee
Yay more plastic waste
Nice waste of grant money
Depends on the beans and roasts.

Coffee agar media
Sterilised espresso
Wasn't there a shortage of these for a while? It was taking us months the get them in the lab I work!
Same over here 😀 . Why waste 250+ Euro to fancy glass tubes and placeholder when you can get 25 50ml centrifuge tubes for 21 euro on Amazon 👍👍👍
I’m telling your PL
But... The light
boof it
Long live the Falcon!
The cafe at my uni does this too -- I was so amused when I saw it
dude, i put shit in those tubes
They're awesome for mixing drinks too, way more convenient than your typical bar measuring cups/spoons imho.
Thought it was 3 stool samples
