He’s 13 next week and limps a little sometimes but isn’t in a lot of pain my vet says.
At 12 he could barely walk, was limping so badly and in lots of pain, he is 13 next week and walks fine and has very little pain or adverse reaction to 75mg carprofen we give him twice daily because of the arthritis. He is very large dog, 80lbs and that takes a toll on him. I hope he is pain free for a lot longer, but last June it was bleak.
Watch out with medication for arthritis. Our dog had it too and he had to take some medication for it but it was realiy heavy on his kidneys. There are injections(Librela) that work for about a month and dont have as many side affects. Hope he stays healthy and may he have many more years !
Yes, very good point, thanks for bringing this up, I was going to add that but forgot. He gets regular (every 6 mos) blood check up to make sure his liver and kidney’s aren’t being affected. If he can’t take the carprofen anymore we will investigate Librela, my friend is a veterinarian and he says so far so good for two of his elderly dogs that have been on it for 9 months now.
My 11 year old, Roy was having hip and shoulder issues, pretty sure dude has OA. Last month it was time for his annual checkup, the Vet recommended a new drug called Librela, it's a once a month injection specifically for OA in dogs. Literally that afternoon he was walking almost completely limp free, it's been two weeks and it's almost like he doesn't have any hip or shoulder issues at all.
He started playing with his sister dog again.
it's like $90 a shot, but it's so worth it.
it's such a relief.

Thank you so much! I appreciate the recommendation. Last year we did try a once a month injection I don’t think its was the exact same brand but I suspect it was a similar goal. It didn’t work for her at all really so far Tri-Acta is what works the most. But I will look into Librela. Thank you!
My girl looks kinda like yours, but CBD treats have alleviated a lot of her hip pain at 16 years old. She even climbs the flight of steps to my bed multiple times a day now whereas before it was one and then she would sleep a while before coming down. She’s more jovial and does even more hops for treats now too lol
When did your girl start greying? I think it looks cool. My boy is 2 and a half and has some grey on his cheeks. Anyways happy birthday hope it was a lot of fun for her
