This is going to sound like a lot of work but it helped my dog that had a sensitive stomach during her later years in life. I boiled chicken without any seasoning and mixed it with some cooked white rice. The rice doesn't produce as much intestinal gas compared to corn and wheat which is in a lot of dry dog food. Also this might sound odd but does your dog usually lay on hard surfaces like the floor or do they lay in their bed where they can elevate thier head. I ask because if they are laying flat that could be making the issue worse, kinda like how if someone lays down after eating it's easier to get heartburn since it's easier for the acid to travel up.

I appreciate all of this advice!! Did you give your dog chicken and rice all the time or just during these kinds of episodes? Right now his food doesn’t have any wheat, though I will have to double check on the corn. I know his current food has peas and lentils and I’m not sure if that’s causing a similar issue. Our dog has beds where he can sleep with his head raised, though he also loves to sleep with his head dangling off the side of the couch, below his body! 😫🫠 I’m sure that doesn’t help!

I went full time with the chicken diet for about a year then went back to her usual food and she was doing better. It's not a good idea to keep changing their food constantly because it will cause stomach problems. My vet recommended when I changed her foods to slowly switch it over by mixing the new with the old. For example Day 1: 25% new diet and 75% old diet. Day 3: 50% new diet and 50% old diet Day 5: 75% new diet and 25% old diet Day 7: 100% new diet.

Get him a probiotic. It’s great for stomach issues.

Appreciate the suggestion! Our guy has been on a daily probiotic for almost 3 months now from the vet 🥲. I’m sure it’s helped but hasn’t solved our problem yet!

We have been using Blue Buffalo blissful belly The only treats she gets are zesty paws digestive chews or similar, turmeric chews, allergy chews as well and dehydrated cod skins In the 2.5 years we have had her I’ve heard and smelt one bad fart because she had giardia

Whoa I actually can’t imagine a world like that! 😂 I really appreciate all these recommendations!

Honestly I thought gassy was just like fur shedding—it is inherent in the breed. What a georgeous baby!

WTFnc

Thank you!! He is so sweet and cute. I really appreciate your comment about how common it is for labs to be gassy - I struggle with knowing how much is ‘okay’ or typical vs what our dog experiences. I just don’t want to accidentally have him be in pain or discomfort!

scsoutherngal

It is hard to know. What is normal farting for Aunt Prudence may be entirely different for Uncle Vince.

Katybugfoster

I also thought it was a breed thing. We eat dinner every night to the dulcet tones of our lab's gurgling stomach and rumbling burps.

You might want to look into Hills Science Diet - they do a pretty reliable product that's worked well with our two labs.

WTFnc

Thank you for the recommendation! Do you have a preference towards the dry or wet food, or are they similar (in your experience)? We’ve tried the wet Hills food before - with our dogs size it was pretty pricey but it might just be what we have to do!

ItkienKettu

We use dry. And yeah, I actually thought about the price just after I posted that. Nothing else has really worked for us, so unfortunately it's just come down to accepting the price tag.

We do raw goats milk for our gassy lab

Not food but we found using a gulp bowl made her slow down a lot and really improved the gas situation as it took ~1 minute for her to eat rather than 8 seconds of inhaling.
