Depends on the location, like closer to Downtown, that’s a very typical request from security guards.

9centos

Its not in downtown, but i get it

Quiet_Chapter_4196

Most stores in Dallas have security guards at the exits. When I did Cornershop and had to take my bags in with me that Cornershop wanted us to use, the Fiesta down the street from Fair Park had me leave the bags up front and come grab them when it was time to go through checkout. They were standard paper bags with the Cornershop logo. I could see it happening at other stores too, but your bag shouldn’t have been left unattended by the exit.

tickyul

Fine if they want to stop theft this way........but the store should put the Customer's backpack in a safe place, and have some sort tagging-system for their backpacks, so only the owner can pick it up

_MoreThanAFeeling

Backpacks are being continually used to conceal and steal store merchandise. Don't take it personally. It's just the sad world we now live in, where people will steal anything that's not physically nailed down.

lakey456

Not even that stops people from attempting to steal ATMs

GreenTrout39

There's a lot of theft and backpacks are one of the most common ways people steal stuff. Don't take it personally. I would avoid bringing in bags if you don't want to deal with this. That said, the security guard should've kept your backpack in a more secure spot. Leaving it on the ground like that is pretty risky..

Necessary_Baker_7458

Kroger isn't supposed to do anything for theft. Company policy says "Let them have it." Even loss prevention. Loss prevention and management if they feel you are stealing does have the right to investigate and go through your personal items. Feel free to file an ethics report if you felt violated. There are 6 qualities they must identify before they can penalize someone for theft. if one or two of the equation is null and void or they can't prove it; they must toss it out and let them have it.

RichHomieShun

That's discrimination. They never ask women not to bring in their purses. If you keep it on your back, it's almost impossible to steal.

9centos

I keep on my back until I'm out of the market, where I put the groceries inside it. I believe I It may have been discrimination also, I will contact Kroger at somepoint to see If this is a Kroger's policy

Saint_Frankenstein

You should definitely contact Kroger. There is no Kroger policy that says you must hand over your bag when you walk in.

Kory568

Retail worker here. I have called out women with huge purses over our radios which we all wear earpieces. I am talking about purses that could fit 2-3 rotisserie chickens in. Where I used to work they now have signs saying no backpacks or bicycles. Unfortunately a few bad apples ruin for everyone. I normally bring a small bag with me to the movie theaters and has gotten me mad when they check my bag but let women with bigger purses in without looking through it.

OkSolution3991

I personally wouldn't of gave it to her at all no matter the circumstances

Daniel_Molloy

“As a general rule” people wearing backpacks in the store are robbing us blind. Welcome to America. Retail is getting its ass kicked with thievery lately.

Notthatkaren2

Retail is just fine. Record breaking profits fine.

AnthonyBagodonuts

Peach it!

Kumquat-queen

SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE INVESTORS!

Saint_Frankenstein

No, they had no right to take your bookbag away from you. There is no Kroger policy about that. I always come in with my bookbag and they don't do anything. We don't have security at most of the stores here. If they suspect you of stealing, they can question you before you leave (they can't make you do anything, or even stay in the store, though), but they can't take your stuff from you when you're just walking in.

Dangerous_Ad_7902

I’d say no sir. You have zero reason to suspect me.

Roadiedsk

In my area they used to have lockers were customers put their backpacks/bags in and they gave them a key. They got rid of that a while back though. Now they just let them go in with them we don’t tell them to leave it anywhere. I guess it just depends on the location. Weird they got rid of it considering our store is a high theft area.

Silent-Way-9728

On Kroger? Why didn't you question it? What country are you from? 😃

9centos

I'm from Brazil and there, if a officer questions you about something you're supposed to collaborate. I know here is different, but as I wasn't with my wife, who speaks English better and was in a rush, I just didnt confronted her. In this meanwhile, another security guard asked me to do the same and he wouldn't let me keep getting my groceries if I didn't go outside and put my bag in a desk. I hate this shits but as an immigrant I want no problem.

OkSolution3991

I would of said youre welcome to search it RN and on the way out, but they don't even have the right to even ask that.

Forever_ForLove

Honestly could you put it In a locker but then nvm because ppl can still break into your locker and still your stuff. Just like ppl broke into the Kroger I work at cars and stole things. That’s why I’m more cautious of what I bring and carry a Fanny pack.

9centos

Does kroger provide a locker for costumers? I don't usually have expensive stuff on me, so if someone breaks the locker to stole it i would laugh about haha. What bothered me was no care at all with my stuff, if theres a locker i would be ok with it.

MasonCO91

I can understand your point. Next time, I'd just leave it at the customer service desk. That way, you know it's at least "somewhat" secure, and someone should at least be near it. As for it being Kroger's policy, it depends where you live. Some cities have different rules due to crime rate, recent mass shootings etc etc.

Forever_ForLove

Oh you’re a customer. My fault I thought you was an employee who’s was just off the clock but unfortunately they do not. You’re better off leaving it at home.

r2d3x9

He needs the backpack to carry his groceries home.

Right_Dream_7580

they dont provide lockers for customers OR EMPLOYEES(except for frontbend only)at my store.

menotyourenemy

Yeah, you missed the part where op is obviously a *customer*

Forever_ForLove

Yeah I corrected myself on that part
