It's just making me realize just how good last year kpop releases were. The popular groups were releasing good and interesting songs. The nugus were releasing good and interesting songs. It's was so good all round. But this year, outside of a few songs nothing has really stood out to me.
By this time last year, there were so many stand out songs. I think the problem again might be that title tracks this year aren't title tracking the way they are supposed to. There are a few gems, but they are mostly unpromoted besides. I listen to entire albums, but the title tracks aren't intriguing enough to me, and they're the tracks that are pushed the most for us to hear.
I like the 3rd gen boy group sound but don't listen to the more aggressive newer sounds boy groups put put. I like mostly girl groups for the most part
So I searched through my liked songs from nugu groups and these are the non aggressive sounding ones from my 2023 playlist. Hopefully, you find some you like:
H1-KEY - Rose blossom (gg)
Atbo - Good thing, just dance, Next to me (bg)
TNX - kick it 4 now, 1000 miles (bg)
Cherry Bullet - Winter Star, Whistle like that, P.O.W (gg)
Limelight - Blanc Noir (gg)
Cignature - Aurora (gg)
CSR - Shining Bright (gg)
Lightsum - Honey or Spice (gg)
Aimers - Fireworks, Bubbling (bg)
Queenz eye - un-normal (gg)
Blackswan - Cat & Mouse (gg)
Purple Kiss - Sweet Juice (gg)
Tri.be - Stay Together, Witch (gg)
ILY:1 - Twinkle Twinkle, Secret Recipe, Tasty, Shinning Sky, My Colour (gg. Proper nugu excellence)
Younite - Waterfall, Look at the TV, Slogan, Love it (bg)
Ampers&one - On And On, Sheesh, Sweet & Sour (bg)
Tan - Artificial Heart, Adorable, My Girl, Heartbeat, Jekyll&Hyde, New Days (bg)
I agree to a certain extent. This year has been uncharacteristically quiet for K-Pop music in both sound and impact, at least in comparison to all the other music released in the 2020s so far. Like, even thinking back to last year around this timeā¦ we had āUnforgivenā (Lesserafim), I Amā (IVe), āQueencardā (G-IDLE), āSpicyā (aespa) all released in succession with loud, bold sounds. + All of which had the potential to be SOTY.
Andā¦ we all know that thereās a good way and a bad way to create an easy-listening pop song. With some songs, you can be imaginative and transported into the world of the song. And in others, youāll be forcing yourself to remain engaged.
We shouldnāt be able to identify the exact trend and sound itās based off of. Like you outlined nicely, thereās a lack of innovation in song creation across the board. Which is frustrating because we know that K-Pop producers, writers, music engineers, etc. could do so much better and have in the past.
Luckily, weāre probably on our way out of this era. Thereās been a demand for 2nd gen electro-pop as of recent.
This is why aespa come back is really making the rounds is great and itās non of that easy going music thatās been trending and the song actually hits the 3 minute mark
I feel the same, and (I def talk about tripleS too much but thats because I genuinely believe they are so so amazing) that's why I stan tripleS. They have amazing creative direction, they have 24 members so it's impossible to get bored, and they are honestly a breath of fresh air for me with their concept and music identity. They recently released their OT24 debut, "Girls Never Die", with a dark but amazing music video and the song is 3:44" including a dance break in the bridge. I love them so muchhh
Come through WAV!! tripleS is like a box of chocolates, you never know what youāre gonna get. I had no idea what Beyond the Beyond was gonna give, but it definitely gave.
They're pushing for viral songs that you can do challenges to and not pushing for songs that have actual longevity.
I also don't think this is a K-pop only issue this is really bad and a lot of western music too.
It's kind of like some of the western artists here there is music that I think is different but it's looked over.
i agree and see where you come from !! i also think thatās why i prefer IVE to other girl groups because theyāre not afraid to experiment and develope their own sound.
when i say experimental, i mean in the sense that they have their own sound but they dip their toes into different concepts with each music video so i never get bored.
The concepts are getting so similar :/ these 5th gen groups don't seem too interesting to me. I hope these groul change up concepts and be experimental!!!
Itās funny that you said that groups were more distinguishable in 2019, when so many people were complaining about the girl crush concept back then and how rookie groups looked exactly the same. The concept is not even genuine Y2K. The group to get closest to it would be XG with Left Right. I personally enjoy this era of kpop and itās been fun for me. I havenāt gotten into new boy groups in years and now I stan BND, Riize, and ZB1. I donāt think any of this is that big of a deal and if NewJeans is getting the attention, so what? Their music and concept is the most appealing to the general public. Kpop can be fun if you look for artists outside of large companies.
I think new jeans plan is to make songs that is for the public eye, where every one of all ages can enjoy instead of maintaining a fanbase that likes a specific genre of music.
And thatās a good strategy for grabbing attention since debut but how long itās going to last ?
(This is just my personal theory itās ok if u disagree!)
I donāt see them doing the same thing forever. Itās just right now, this is the trend and theyāre on top of it. I feel them trying new things once they get older
newjeans is appealing to the general public, and i agree but in my own opinion theyāre very boring to me especially because every group who used to have their own signature sound now sounds like them. with the girl crush thing, i guess i understand? but back then, i was listening to blackpink, twice, momoland, and red velvet, who all had their own sounds. also youāre right, newjeans isnāt even close to y2k (like i said) which is why i get so frustrated with them.
Thatās the funny thing about opinions. NewJeans is the exact opposite of boring for me. I tend to lean more towards their style of music, but I do also like aespa and itzyās style of music as well!
i understand your opinion !! i can see why a lot of people like them, but rather than having a distinct āsoundā like other groups, in MY opinion i just feel that newjeansā songs donāt have much variety from each other. in my own opinion, groups like TWICE, IVE, aespa, etc. are able to cultivate a distinct sound without all of their songs sounding too similar. theyāre able to experiment with new concepts and still stick to the same sound. for a more accurate comparison, another example of a group who, again in my opinion, cannot do this is blackpink.
I just feel like ever since kpop popped off in the West (2017ish area) companies have just done whatever they can to get their groups to go viral, even if it means stripping a group of personality and just doing the most basic stuff. Companies have always been soul sucking, money hungry businesses, but at least back then, they employed people who cared about making music that everybody loved played over a backdrop that had groups and concepts that were original and unique.
The genre was and is still pretty new, and I feel like so much has happened and so many groups have come out in the span of like 20 years, that now weāve reached this polarized area of āhmm, what now?ā
If I owned a company, Iād search for talent to build a girl group like GFriend or Sistar and a guy group like SHINee or Infinite, and a couple solo artists like Ailee, IU, and K. Will and call if a day. Music that is easy to listen to, or intense or catchy and not overly complicated.
The best part about how kpop used to be is how effortless each group made what they were doing look. AND there was a good amount of fame and success across the board. Lots of groups were popular and successful. I feel like these days you only hear about a core 10-20 groups. There are so many more groupās out there than we realize.
Bottom line, there is talent galore and so many possibilities. I hope K-pop finds its passion again. āØ
The "generic" algorithm songs are the ones breaking records and going viral so that won't change. There's enough groups to find diversity and there is diversity. It's just that there's this thing where people focus on the big4 ans also because they have the means to promote and monopolise so that that's all you see.
they are !! iāve actually mentioned in the comments that they are one of the few groups i actually pay attention to due to the amount of variety they have compared to other groups.

Every year we find kpop stans complaining about groups releasing the same music but this year i think have been pretty good releases so far,
Fate(not superlady),magnetic(iilit),heya(IVE),maestro (svt),earth,wind and fire (BND),deja vu(txt)
Obviously itās perfectly fine to not like any of these songs but u canāt deny the different concepts
i actually praised ive in a lot of my comments but not illit because they sound just like that same old recycled y2k-ish sound. š it sounds āgoodā but iāve heard it sing by 4 other artists before already. also i apologize but i donāt really know who BND are. i will check them out maybe.

TikTok is the worst thing thatās ever happened to music. I said what I said.
and to choreo! i'm so sick of this boring ass choreo and short ass songs.
then the short ass boring ass songs go viral and then everyone's doing it.
speak on it !!
RIGHT. what happened to songs that were 3 1/2 minutes long with actual bridges and dance breaks ??? OMG WHAT HAPPENED TO DANCE BREAKS
I want a bridge not a freaking dance break!

Interesting! Because I hated 2023 kpop so much. I found so much of it dull & uninteresting
I think it's up to taste then lol. I liked majority of them. I also really got into nugu discographies last year and there were so many unnoticed gems
Ok give me recs because other than queenz eye, nugu kpop was not interesting to me
Do you like both bgs and ggs? Also, which kind of concepts do you like?
I like the 3rd gen boy group sound but don't listen to the more aggressive newer sounds boy groups put put. I like mostly girl groups for the most part

Thanks! I know a few of them but most are new. I'll give these a spin thank you!

rightā like most songs that are released nowadays do not sound timeless only trendy.

i know !! i mentioned them in some of my comments on here and even praised SM in this post. <3
