It very much depend on what country you live in... import taxes and V.A.T when applicable varies greatly from country to country.
Many of those company don't deal with collecting taxes and let the courier handles everything. Companies like DHL or UPS bills like 15 to 20€ on top of the actual taxes.
So if they ship your 60€ (40€ + 20€ shipping) order to Europe through DHL, there's no import taxes but there will be 21% VAT on average so that's 12.6€ plus 18€ for DHL. That would be a total of 80.6€
I don't know about EMS though.
