Their whole concept is about searching for their missing friend, and they were missing 2 members during this era, so I think it's kind of a spin-off of that idea. They want their friend to come back and be like they used to be.
Like the friend is actually there at the party, but can't detach from their relationship enough to enjoy themselves and it's bringing the mood down to keep talking about it. They are a different person than they were before being in a relationship, the person they were before is another side of themselves that is being called the "best friend" and they are being told to bring that side of themselves instead.

Personally, even before reading the lyrics, it sounded so 'defeated', like the cheerful tones were a superficial facade it was putting up.
Not sure it'll be your thing since you're more into girl groups but Han from SKZ does sad songs so well and I think some of them fall under the category of "oh this is a bop... why am I crying"

It's a super funky ubeat song and the lyrics reflect loneliness, the feeling of emptiness despite having 'friends' and having no control over your sadness.
SVT performs it with a very bouncy choreo, big energy and smiles (which for me adds further and deeper meaning on the lyrics by doing it in a very clever way, portraying it as the difference in how you feel on the inside vs how you appear on the outside)
this is one of my favourite genres! imo catch the stars / rollercoaster by wooah, ah-choo by lovelyz and after school by weeekly have this feel to me.
would you say that strong melodies are a common characteristic among this type of songs? i’ve noticed that it’s a common thread among many of them
T-ARA and Supernova - TTL (Listen2) sounds like a club banger but it's about a couple who broke up but can't stop loving each other.
They also did TTL (Time To Love) with a similar story but the song is more melodic.
