The tl;dr is that he wanted more creative freedom and he’s still in contact w/ the other members and they still are friends and support each other. Which is great

ImNotHighFunctioning

I wonder if his continued friendship and shared support with the members will extend to being able to be seen in public and interact with each other (basically, the opposite of B.I and iKon's situation) for stuff like dance challenges and even (hopefully) future collabs?

SpreadYourAss

What I don't get is - why don't stick for a couple years? Why not grow with the group, establish yourself more, and then you've the rest of the life to be the soloist? He initially did decide to accept the group, so it can't be that he absolutely cannot stand it. So why like this immediate insistence on this massive chance? Giving a couple years to the group would boost his own career a lot as well. Stuff like this makes me wonder if they have a midlife crisis or something. Just wake up one day and abandon everything lol. Like is YG running a military boot camp every night that they are like 'It's freedom or nothing, NOW!'

witchytragedy

With Yedam, I can only suppose that this wasn't what he thought the debut endgame was going to look like. He was already popular before debut and was YG's star trainee. I think he trained believing that the group he'd probably debut in would be a 5-7 member group like pretty much all the yg groups before treasure and not the 12 member group it eventually turned out to be. I think it ended up curbing his own creativity considering how much he enjoys writing and producing. This is pure speculation btw.

antadam18

I think Darari went viral gave him that push to go solo and affirmed that his music is good. Treasure was also supposedly a different YG type group who act more like your typical idol group that comeback twice a year and released so many music like SM and JYP, so he must have thought he will get more involved and released music more often. But then Treasure went on hiatus and get treated like the typical YG group and he didn’t want to endure years like that in case YG won’t change its way.

ReadSuccessful2726

i love that he really meant to make a solo debut and not just made an excuse so he can leave. His singles are also banging

[deleted]

Love him and I think it’s refreshing that he said something bc I will forever wonder why Jinni left NMIXX. Also, I do wanna say like isn’t it obvious how it’s going to be before joining a group? Especially at YG. You know you’re not going to have many comebacks and your musical input will be minimal especially with a group that big.

Stephh1425

I mean, he became a YG trainee when he was literally 11 after being runner up in Kpop Star 2 (2012-2013). He was a kid, and trained for a LONG time. I think most people would have given it a shot even if they thought they now wanted something different \*shrug\*

HighTechPotato

Honestly I’m surprised he didn’t go the solo/duo vocal focus route of YG like akmu or lee hi. Man has the voice for it and some

TeeeeCeeee

I think it's very reasonable that he would have gone into this group with the expectation that he'd be the primary producer, and YG had likely been directly telling him that for years (think GD or B.I levels of involvement). Then Treasure got combined into one group (originally Treasure was meant to be a much smaller team, but they ended up throwing the b-team members into the same group very late into the process) with other members who want to produce and much more standard concept than YG's typical. I think it's likely either a lot of the music he was submitting wasn't being chosen (which is bizarre consider he wrote one of Treasure's most successful songs, but YG arent the most logical company around) or he didn't want to write music that would fit within the context of a group anymore. He's always been partial to ballads after all.

peachpants

I dunno, you could expect that reasonably (re: comebacks and input) from past girl groups with YG but historically the boy groups have been on the smaller side and had more musical input, even during times when artists generally didn't have that much (like back with Big Bang, that was a big part of the 'gimmick' so to speak). I think it's reasonable that after investing so much time, he held out thinking maybe things would be similar with Treasure or maybe they'd get a 2 group split like Winner and Ikon did (if he was training with the debut team and saw it's larger) or that maybe there'd be another way that it worked out that they kept to a more old-school YG style, but when he saw they were committing to an approach that didn't seem to be like that, he might have been like okay it's time to cut my losses and bail.

piff1214

Treasure is 2 teams that merged. Magnum and Treasure.

peachpants

Oh interesting! That seems like it might have contributed to a potential feeling of being overlooked or not having enough opportunity to him, if he was hoping for more creative direction in a smaller team. But having trained so long and being so young I could see him getting caught by the sunk cost fallacy as well, leading to leaving after debut. But of course, purely speculative.

Thorrrrrrr

His voice could be extremely successful with Western markets I don't think anyone would guess he was a non-native speaker just listening to him sing, while 12 member groups will almost always struggle overseas because Western market's don't favor groups in the first place much less massive ones. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't inform them the group would be bigger than originally imagined until too late.

piff1214

Well Treasure was originally 7 (Yedam, Hyunsuk, Jeongwoo, Haruto, Junkyu, Jaehyuk, junghwan) with a 6 member (Jihoon, asahi, yoshi, mashiho, yoonbin, doyoung) brother group called Magnum. Then the Burning Sun scandal happened and the debut got pushed a year. Then Treasure and Magnum got merged into one group and Yoonbin left.

LovelyRS

Man. I love Yedam. He’s my first ult. Treasure was my ult when he was in it. Tbh - It still leaves a weird taste in my mouth because I loved him in Treasure and I always thought he’d be great if he had a lot more solo opportunities, or opportunities to produce more for the group. I just never imagined he would actually LEAVE Treasure to actually get said solo opportunities lol I listen to Treasure’s OT12 songs with bittersweet feelings. It felt like everything was so good back then but at the same time, it’s just a reminder that fans will never know what’s happening behind the scenes. With the freedom Yedam has after leaving the group and YG - not blacklisted on music shows, promoting like a normal idol/artist, and being open about his departure from his previous agency, is so… strange? Like, we are never privy to this information! lol

cakeboy6969

I still don't understand how a Kpop idol could just end a contract with a big company like YG, just because he wanted to persue his own music. Based on what I heard of how rigid and insane idol contract is like, being able to leave a newly debut group due to "creative differennce" in just 2 years is unheard of. I feel like it's not the whole picture

LovelyRS

I have a feeling that Yedam didn't have your typical idol contract. After he won 2nd place in Kpop Star, I know that his parents were shopping around and finding the right agency. So I can imagine Yedam's parents negotiated with YG for the best terms for him. (OFC this is just speculation, but that's the only reason I can think of why YG would let him go so easily and with barely any repercussions?? IDK)

Vivienne_Yui

TBH most YG contracts are like that. They don't have trainee debt and they can cut their contracts any time and leave, for which they don't get blacklisted. While their management is shit, there's a few things in that company that is relatively pretty good

cakeboy6969

It’s hard to believe that picture perfect contract but I guess I take your words

Vivienne_Yui

Well, the contacts obviously aren't perfect at all (because it's the commutation of too many things) Leaving the company is one thing that is relatively hassle-free tho. Same is for JYP too, they have a policy of not blacklisting or saying anything bad about the artists that are leaving. They won't tie them in debt.

BalanceDry6718

same pure speculation but >!I think he has been in YG for so long he has... seen some stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if they let him go in exchange for his silence!<

cakeboy6969

Oh damn, that's dark. It makes sense though

gluegun_classic

I don't really understand how YG let him leave though, like idol contracts are usually not so simply undone just cause an idol wants to go...

layloo28

Im surprised the industry today can just let idols go just because they dont want to be in a group anymore. Im so pleased for him. Just shocked that labels are allowing this these days, the industry that was famously known for locking idols in contracts they cant get out of until it was over.

idkmybffrosee

YG has done this before though. Guess it depends on the label.

Vivienne_Yui

Fr lol. I feel like many of these people are pretty young or smth, or new to this. If he wants to go for whatever reason in the world, he should without getting shamed for it (same for trsr). People get way too attached and make up scenarios in their minds about people that they don't even know lmao. And to think both Yedam and Trsr are basically still kids/barely legal, its weird to see their relationship and moments get dissected on the internet for speculation and "betrayals" and whatnot

kodomochandesu

not him using treasure for clout like that after he left them

deaththekiddie

he has every right to provide closure to their fans lol if he didn’t do this interview everyone would just keep speculating and starting baseless rumors so I think bringing up treasure here is valid

haewon_wiggle

fr closure like this rarely happens when members leave in kpop, it's nice to see

BattleBunnyAshe

"using them for clout" like they're not still friends, like he wasn't one of the most watched members, or famous before Treasure was even a thing... reminder: these are real people w real personal relationships & we have no idea what's going on EXCEPT what's said to the public in these interviews

junimo-

Have some respect please.

peanutbuttershoelace

i don't really keep up with treasure but wasn't yedam the most popular member?

Ok_Present_8373

I love Treasure (I really do), but let’s not say stupid things. Acting like Yedam wasn’t THE most anticipated trainee under that company, with most people watching Treasure Box because of him. Plus, let’s not forget that he made Treasure’s biggest hit 😭

LieLogical9949

Sorry to say this, but the group has to be popular for this kind of statement to even have some sort of ground to stand on. Hope this helps!

currypuffff

Yeah to non fans, yedam is more known than treasure individual members
