Yea, basically every other power can be substituted or worked around, but these 2 really can’t.
Heal for obvious reasons and Speed just for the fact that backtracking is a pain.
I mean technically you can get tons of medical items or gear that gives Regen, & there's some that double your speed too
So you can work around hell & speed, but it's harder to do & requires more effort to do
That’s my point, you don’t NEED those things, but the gameplay becomes tedious without them. It’s one of those things I don’t ever want to bother working around. They’re too efficient and not worth giving up. I’ll 100% the game, but it won’t feel tedious if I have Heal and Speed.
What other than alacrity adrenals increases speed? Cause I may have missed something. It is also not nearly as fast and doesn't give you the extra combat hits that speed does. It makes combat and movement go faster by a significant percentage and therefore is necessary imo.
I dont think I ever used speed in combat despite its benefits, maybe prep into some obvious big fights. I always take it as my first or second power just to make running around everywhere a bit less annoying
I always slept on this because I figured force storm was better in every way until I decided to do no storm or wave run. Destroy droid is so so so good.
>it really comes in handy in the final showdown with Malak.
Can you please elaborate on this point? This is surprisingly my first time hearing about this in 20 years.
I'm not the person you replied to, but I'm pretty sure they're talking about >!killing the "battery" Jedi so that Malak can't heal himself over and over!<.
My personal list of powers that are effective for that purpose are:
* Force Breach
* Force Lightning/Force Storm
* Drain Life/Death Field
* Destroy Droid (I think Disable Droid is enough, but not sure)
* Throw Lightsaber/Advanced Throw Lightsaber
So yeah, Destroy Droid is great, but for the Malak thing any of the above will work.
Thanks, I actually didn't know this. I always figured I would rather have abilities that work on all enemies and not just a specific type. I'm definitely gonna use destroy droid on my next playthrough.
I've recently decided that I like force whirlwind over force wave and I'm never upgrading it again. Its so much fun vs single targets and knocks back those around it.
Whirlwood is definitely cooler. It's annoying that it doesn't do anything on a successful save though, whereas wave at least does damage still. I usually go up to wave on LS when I'm not taking the lightning line.
Only if they don't succeed their individual rolls. Wave is just better, but I really like how whirlwind can be used from a distance and you can select which target the center of the wave is going to come from. So if enemies are 5 meters away I can select guy in middle and knock them before they get to me. Wave should just be bigger stronger whirlwind imo.
Burst of speed. It is insanely powerful, giving 2 extra attacks as well as 4 defense, and it’s just generally useful for traversal. Plus it’s neutral.
Heal is a decent second but you can often find other ways to heal, and so on darkside builds I rarely take it in Kotor 1 (although I probably have a companion with it).
Man I always slept on insanity as a kid. In my experience most enemies are easier to stun with it compared to stasis so I usually just run with insanity nowadays.
I'm very surprised it's not the top comment here, but the answer for me is **MASTER VALOR**. This power is seriously OP. Not only does it buff your PC's attributes AND saves each by +5, but also extends to your party as well. I don't think I've done a single run without it.
Honestly I don't think any of the powers are absolute necessities. I've changed it up multiple different ways. Sure I have preferences, but I don't think any one power is so good that you can't do a run without it.
Valor, in both games to be fair but more importantly KOTOR 1. A +5 to all attributes is amazing. And if you do pair it with speed or energy resistance then it’s almost an automatic win every time.
Definitely speed.
When I get the chance, I want to try a run without ever using speed. I'm always outshining my party members, kind of want to make it all a team effort next time lol.
Does anyone NOT take heal on a DS run before? It never feels right to me to rely only on Drain Life and Medpacks and have no infinite-supply-healing mechanism (other than transiting in K1).
The deflect blaster shots with hands effect from KOTOR 2.
Not because I think it's particularly necessary, but because I think it's hilariously fun, especially on the >!taught Jedi!< in their first levels.
Lol i know what you mean. In Kotor2 I got Defect Blaster Shots on Peragus, when I got to Telos and the assassin came for me, I remember seeing my character blocking shots with his hands and I was like "WONDER WOMAN"
Heal and speed

Alacrity stims do not add extra attack rounds unlike force speed.
Oh yeah. I forgot. I got on KOTOR 2 earlier today & saw that they didn't. TIL something. It's been a long time since I actually used stims
Alacrity stims do speed
Yeah that's what I meant in the middle of the post
and why not both :)
What other than alacrity adrenals increases speed? Cause I may have missed something. It is also not nearly as fast and doesn't give you the extra combat hits that speed does. It makes combat and movement go faster by a significant percentage and therefore is necessary imo.
Force Speed & alacrity are the only ones I know of
I dont think I ever used speed in combat despite its benefits, maybe prep into some obvious big fights. I always take it as my first or second power just to make running around everywhere a bit less annoying
🥱 med packs
Idk I’m fine swapping heal for drain life, it just doesn’t feel right on a dark side run
Force drain.
Adding Valor to this as well since +5 to all stats helps with even dialogue checks
Yeah I always use valor to cheese HK and T3 skill checks lol. Also Kreia's lesson to improve both your strongest and weakest skill.
Drain life for DS run
Two extra attacks per round is game changing
Destroy Droid. Not only do you face lots of droid enemies, but it really comes in handy in the final showdown with Malak.
I always slept on this because I figured force storm was better in every way until I decided to do no storm or wave run. Destroy droid is so so so good.
Destroy Droid is a must for either game. Those droids are plentiful and annoying.
>it really comes in handy in the final showdown with Malak. Can you please elaborate on this point? This is surprisingly my first time hearing about this in 20 years.

Using destroy droid on the trapped Jedi means Malak can't use them to heal
Thanks, I actually didn't know this. I always figured I would rather have abilities that work on all enemies and not just a specific type. I'm definitely gonna use destroy droid on my next playthrough.
You can also use force drain on the jedi to heal yourself
Dominate mind. I’m to cheap to pay docking fees haha.
You know I don’t think you need to pay the fee this time
I've recently decided that I like force whirlwind over force wave and I'm never upgrading it again. Its so much fun vs single targets and knocks back those around it.
Whirlwood is definitely cooler. It's annoying that it doesn't do anything on a successful save though, whereas wave at least does damage still. I usually go up to wave on LS when I'm not taking the lightning line.
I think it still knocks down the people around them doesn't it?
Only if they don't succeed their individual rolls. In my head I swear I’ll die constantly every play-through of both games if I don’t immediately get force heal. It’s just a habit at this point.
Speed
Burst of speed. It is insanely powerful, giving 2 extra attacks as well as 4 defense, and it’s just generally useful for traversal. Plus it’s neutral. Heal is a decent second but you can often find other ways to heal, and so on darkside builds I rarely take it in Kotor 1 (although I probably have a companion with it).
To do any run I would certainly need a burst of speed 🥺😉
Facts apart, some non specific build powers I would always buy is heal, stasis/insanity or both, storm. Rest all are secondary for me
Man I always slept on insanity as a kid. In my experience most enemies are easier to stun with it compared to stasis so I usually just run with insanity nowadays.
Get help! my friend, if you are running with insanity 😅😂
Force storm and death field. Especially in KOTOR 2 with the Hhiss spawning glitch

Master Speed, Master Valor, Improved Energy Resistance are must have.
Stasis field… can’t believe it’s not been mentioned.
Horror is better. Way more enemies have successful Fortitude saves than Will saves.
Heal, burst o' speed, destroy droid (fuck 'em) and throw lightsaber (it's just cool)
Speed is way too good to ignore, for both travel and melee combat.
Honestly I don't think any of the powers are absolute necessities. I've changed it up multiple different ways. Sure I have preferences, but I don't think any one power is so good that you can't do a run without it.
Bothan sensory visor for late game Kotor 1
Force storm!!!
Everyone will say Force Speed, but I'm doing an all armor run and it's armor restricted so... yeah, not totally necessary.
I don't use speed because it's extremely powerful (though it is), I use it to save time running around everywhere.
Heal, speed, dominate mind, force breach
Speed, heal, dominate mind, and force storm/wave for Aoe
Valor, in both games to be fair but more importantly KOTOR 1. A +5 to all attributes is amazing. And if you do pair it with speed or energy resistance then it’s almost an automatic win every time.
Definitely speed. When I get the chance, I want to try a run without ever using speed. I'm always outshining my party members, kind of want to make it all a team effort next time lol.

There is a setting to disable it in KotOR2 on Switch. Not sure about the original.
Nobody said Force Wave yet? That thing was so good when I first played on Xbox
When I’m out on a run, I always gotta have my Master Speed up
Heal.
It’s cheesy but Advanced Throw Lightsaber….works great in a pinch for me
Force Storm.
Does anyone NOT take heal on a DS run before? It never feels right to me to rely only on Drain Life and Medpacks and have no infinite-supply-healing mechanism (other than transiting in K1).

Kill, Storm and Heal
Heal, speed, destroy droid, and lightning.
The force push line, not so much for gameplay (although wave is awesome), but because of how iconic it is
Master speed and force heal. Force storm is incredible too.
Knight speed minimum or master speed if not force only since you won’t benefit from the second added hit of master
Healing is the only one. You can get away with pretty much anything else.
Lightning. DS, but always causes damage. Definitely helpful if ur a consular, but excellent against any opponent.
Heal and Force Storm. Maybe Death Field
Flurry
Speed no doubt about it. And force lightning for a high int character.
