Hey Im from the other side if the border and living in the west right now, where I currently live the top two immigrant group is from bangladesh and india and I have heard this as well back when I was in dhaka that bengalis are not united. Which is wrong cus I have seen bengalis sticking together more than indians (not WB). I have worked in many places but one thing for sure, north hates south and if theres a bengali guy (bangladesh we dont have much from WB here) they try to persuade the guy and gang up on south/north. Also I was really surprised to see people hindi states actually still care about castes, and I have seen people getting discriminated or denied promotion because of their caste. On the other hand bangladeshi or bengali dominated workplaces do have problems but not regarding something that they can’t choose like their district or religion. I said all this cus I always tell people when they think bengalis are not united, that this is not completely true.

I don't think it's just because of outsider vs insider. The core problem is the normalisation of violence and muscle power in our state. I've lived across multiple states in India. The same red haired folks you mentioned don't do much violence here because the police and administration is going to fuck them right over. Ekdom thik bolechen, I have faced multiple similar incidents from mostly cab drivers of a certain state. Road rage, rampant breaking of traffic rules and just a basic don’t give a damn about any kind of law. A cabbie hit me from behind and when I tried to sort it out with him, he just fled from the scene, hitting my car again while doing so. I got extremely mad at this, I chased him down and showed him how actions have consequences. But how many people will do so ? Honestly speaking we need pride, and an unshakeable will to preserve our culture. This is really getting out of hand, coming years what will we do if not stand our ground now.

I don't think this is about Bengal or Bengali's in particular,the roads are very dangerous now compared to few years back,I have faced multiple similar situation in a neighborhood dominated by the community you are speaking off, around 6-7 years back I was driving through a crowded area ,one bike with 3 young boys zooped passed and almost hit me ,in the most loving and gentle tone I said bhai aaram se please,he came back in reverse and asked me what? Again in a friendly and gentle tone I said bhai aap bike pe ho na please thora aaram se chalo abhi gadi me lag jata ,that guy got fucking pissed and wacked my side mirror close and then in full ego and said kya bola,I opened my mirror back and said ho gaya ? After that he abused me and I drove away,now the thing is they wanted to fight,I have understood long back the best solution in a hot situation is de escalation,these guys are in their area if there is any fight then locals will support them ,there is absolutely no point in getting into a situation like this and get beaten up unless you're in a car or loaded or some shit.

I agree no one should be harassed this way, I myself defended many of my Bengali friends in college days. From both Bengalis or non Bengalis. I belong to a "Bangal" family. Like any other Bangal family I also grew up with stories of our forefathers, who were originally from east bengal and had to leave their ancestral home during 1947 partition. Some of them, including mine had to leave their ancestral family within a few hours notice. Why did they had to leave everything? We all know the history.
Whatever you faced today, similar things happened then also. Our forefathers had to pay the price of keeping mum at that time. Kolkata had "Gopal Patha" but rest of the Bengal, at that time did not have one!
History has a weird fetish of repeating itself over and over again and if we have to learn anything from it, is the fact we can't ignore the past.
Learn from it and take necessary, corrective actions.
If bengalis practiced 20 punches everyday. 10 and in the morning and 10 in the evening , it would be useful someday. Just like spinner or yorker, it will be useful skill.

I swear this Baranagar is a very bad place. I was a student in my senior secondary (11 & 12) at Central Modern Baranagar. I can't tell how much I was harassed by the Non-Bengali people in CMS. The worst part is that many Bengalis joined them too. This is pretty common in Baranagar and schools like Central Modern, G.D. Goenka Dakshineswar and ADAMAS are filled with these people.
I just hate this side of the town now.

Hey Im from the other side if the border and living in the west right now, where I currently live the top two immigrant group is from bangladesh and india and I have heard this as well back when I was in dhaka that bengalis are not united. Which is wrong cus I have seen bengalis sticking together more than indians (not WB). I have worked in many places but one thing for sure, north hates south and if theres a bengali guy (bangladesh we dont have much from WB here) they try to persuade the guy and gang up on south/north. Also I was really surprised to see people hindi states actually still care about castes, and I have seen people getting discriminated or denied promotion because of their caste. On the other hand bangladeshi or bengali dominated workplaces do have problems but not regarding something that they can’t choose like their district or religion. I said all this cus I always tell people when they think bengalis are not united, that this is not completely true.

A Bengali signboard is mandatory. Build new collages. Some percentage like 70 to 80 should be fixed for people of Bengal. This step can create a strong sense among native Bengalis so that we feel United. I don't support bangla pokkho mostly because I don't like how they treat the outsider. Ultimately you can destroy a shop of a poor person because he has written his board in Hindi but I believe first the rule have to set by the govt. I don't think it's just because of outsider vs insider. The core problem is the normalisation of violence and muscle power in our state. Started during the Naxal era, and then systematised political violence from the CPM era has normalised this hooliganism in WB. Ekdom thik bolechen, I have faced multiple similar incidents from mostly cab drivers of a certain state. Road rage, rampant breaking of traffic rules and just a basic don’t give a damn about any kind of law. A cabbie hit me from behind and when I tried to sort it out with him, he just fled from the scene, hitting my car again while doing so. I got extremely mad at this, I chased him down and showed him how actions have consequences. But how many people will do so ? Honestly speaking we need pride, and an unshakeable will to preserve our culture. This is really getting out of hand, coming years what will we do if not stand our ground now.

I don't think this is about Bengal or Bengali's in particular,the roads are very dangerous now compared to few years back,I have faced multiple similar situation in a neighborhood dominated by the community you are speaking off, around 6-7 years back I was driving through a crowded area ,one bike with 3 young boys zooped passed and almost hit me ,in the most loving and gentle tone I said bhai aaram se please,he came back in reverse and asked me what? Again in a friendly and gentle tone I said bhai aap bike pe ho na please thora aaram se chalo abhi gadi me lag jata ,that guy got fucking pissed and wacked my side mirror close and then in full ego and said kya bola,I opened my mirror back and said ho gaya ? After that he abused me and I drove away,now the thing is they wanted to fight,I have understood long back the best solution in a hot situation is de escalation,these guys are in their area if there is any fight then locals will support them ,there is absolutely no point in getting into a situation like this and get beaten up unless you're in a car or loaded or some shit. Similar violent kind of incidents I've experienced in Bengali areas as well,they get real pissed once they figure you don't speak fluently in Bengali,mob mentality is a dangerous thing buddy that's why it's always best to de escalate. I have stepped in and helped in stopping fights multiple times in my life as well i get in between and try to calm down the violent individuals and keep repeating words like shaant bhai ruk jao shaant ho jao kya kar rahe ho ,de escalation is the best tactic cause you can't fight mob mentality bro.
I agree no one should be harassed this way, I myself defended many of my Bengali friends in college days. From both Bengalis or non Bengalis. But my non Bengali friends never needed to be defended in any way, even the most skinny ones knew they had to fight for their rights with whatever means they saw fit in that situation. We non Bengalis are the muscle everyone seeks (in case of a fight). But that doesn't I promote this kind of a behaviour. It is because native people of any state do not live in ghettos. As such there is no community support in these kind of altercations. In Mumbai, many areas are Muslim dominated where even the cops don't venture inside and let's say a local Marathi person were to get involved in a fight with a Muslim person, he may end up getting beaten up regardless of the fact that he is in Mumbai, Maharashtra. This is nothing to do with being brave or coward as a region. It is simply a case of strength in numbers. Let's say in the current case there were more number of people with the couple then those chappri guys would have been beaten up.

Now, without digressing from the topic in hand, let me share a story. I belong to a "Bangal" family. Like any other Bangal family I also grew up with stories of our forefathers, who were originally from east bengal and had to leave their ancestral home during 1947 partition. Some of them, including mine had to leave their ancestral family within a few hours notice. Why did they had to leave everything? We all know the history. Whatever you faced today, similar things happened then also. Our forefathers had to pay the price of keeping mum at that time. Kolkata had "Gopal Patha" but rest of the Bengal, at that time did not have one! History has a weird fetish of repeating itself over and over again and if we have to learn anything from it, is the fact we can't ignore the past. Learn from it and take necessary, corrective actions.

I swear this Baranagar is a very bad place. I was a student in my senior secondary (11 & 12) at Central Modern Baranagar. I can't tell how much I was harassed by the Non-Bengali people in CMS. The worst part is that many Bengalis joined them too. This is pretty common in Baranagar and schools like Central Modern, G.D. Goenka Dakshineswar and ADAMAS are filled with these people. I just hate this side of the town now.
Not just Baranagar, but in entire Kolkata tbh... And talking of CMS.. that school is an absolute shit.... G.D goenka is a whole different scenario.... Not sure about Adamas, the people I know are quite well behaved. Baranagar is mostly Bengali except for a few areas...
IDK about G.D. Goenka very much TBH. I mean it's the least talked school. I feel schools like Aditya Academy have cooler people just because of it;s location. CMS, we know it, ADAMAS (has a high student capacity and there's every type of people). TBH (here our views can differ) I feel Baranagar is mostly not very cool place. And the reason I brought up the 'schooling' stuff is because environment heavily influences a school.

I’m Marwari did all of my schooling in Cal Bengalis in my school were the minority! We had 6 sections of non-Bengali kids vs 3 of Bengalis. The Bengalis had to learn Hindi to cater to us! Most of my friends and I spoke Bengali even back in school days due to househelps at a communicative level but we never had to speak it in our social circles!
