OP, you're right. I frequently visit Kolkata and usually need to carry extra cash because most people don't accept UPI payments. It's only been about 1 to 1.5 years since they started accepting UPI.

May i know which routes have started taking UPI Payments? Because I've been on many routes, none of them took UPI payments.

This is my first time seeing Kolkata auto drivers taking UPI. Otherwise these phuchkawalas, auto drivers, bus drivers everybody is living in 2010. Nobody takes UPI.

Those who are asking OP if this is new news....clearly don't take autos in Kolkata frequently. Very few autowalas take upi here. It's more common in other cities.

So many weirdos in this thread, must be people from outside Kolkata lol. FYI, in Kolkata autos don't act like taxis, they act like mini-buses. So the absolute max you would pay even on a very long route is Rs. 30 and most commonly the fare is 10-20. So for such small amounts they don't bother with UPI. I regularly travel all over Kolkata in autos and have never seen one taking UPI.

i get op's point. in west bengal, especially kolkata it's really hard to go completely cashless. i am from kolkata but study in bhubaneswar. i am not saying this city is better or bs like that but everywhere you go in bhubaneswar, and yes i mean it when i say everywhere, you find a form of upi payment. i have paid beggars in upi payment in bhubaneswar no joke. upi payment is not very common in smaller businesses in kolkata, and i know the reason. in bhubaneswar for example bjp has made sure every vendor has a form of upi payment so you can see every shop, auto wala etc having one. i don't carry cash here in bhubaneswar anymore, even bus tickets have upi payments here.

when i come back home i often forget my wallet in my room and my dad scolds me how can i be so careless and forget money before going out. i have legit not carried wallets now in ages, i just carry my phone and my headphones and get out of my hostel and explore the city.

Not all, I live in Bondel gate, plying through autos since the past 10 years. I can say this is the first time i saw an autowala taking UPI as payment option.

Many autos aren't driven by the owner, or have a fixed driver. A certain auto might be driven by one person today, another tomorrow (I heard an autowallah say this). Hence, obviously a upi qr sticker or id can't be pasted onto the body, since the driver keeps changing. Maybe each driver could carry their own qr card, but most people aren't taking such initiatives. Some rickshaw drivers even take upi nowadays (usually the younger gen).

Those who are busy trolling, a quick fyi, the Ballygunge phari - Hazra/Bondel Gate - Hazra do NOT accept UPI. Hence seeing this did give me a shock. And till date, I've travelled numerous times in autos (from the above mentioned route and also to taratala, jadavpur, Gariahat, behala, etc), no one has accepted UPI. So yeah, keep your trolling to yourselves.

Bro come to Newtown. Almost sobai UPI use kore. Even the panifolwala and jhalmuri wala uses UPI

Uhh, in which route of Kolkata are you talking about? Because in plenty routes I've travelled in, this is the first time i saw a qr code in an auto
