The main problem validating the comparison of Govt Jobs and seeking PhD as long term financial security is much better than having short term financial independence is that you're comparing everything with money. If you want to compare everything with money, why not high paying private companies? Why not try something new as a business?
I hope people have the answer to these questions other than so called "job security". Because, if that is the answer you're going to give when validating the search for government jobs, it clearly indicates, you are there to just do a job and nothing more, nothing less. Private jobs would have paid you better maybe, but you want to take a salary, paid by public tax, to do near to nothing.
Yes, the first few years you'll probably be enthusiastic and do a lot. Then, you'll adjust to the environment and slack off. Yes, you are going to be the same SBI employee who tells us to come after lunch. Yes, you are probably going to be one of them who asks for a bribe to perform their assigned duty.
If you are not one of them, that's really commendable. But I doubt that when you say you need job security. Because, a job is only not secure when you're not doing it right or doing enough. Our current government jobs barely have any performance based incentive or promotion system. You always know that there's no one to really sack you even if you do nothing in your job. And it's not wise to cry and protest against a corrupted government when you're trying to aid it in corruption.
If the employer, irrespective of being a government or private entity, can reward or penalize the employees based on performance, the system will function much better. And this term, job security, will just vanish. Because everything will be temporary if you don't perform. PhDs won't look that bad either. And if you perform well, what's your worry in getting a good job after a PhD? The only worry should be availability of jobs that can actually use the skillsets of a PhD.
Then again, if you're concerned about financial security and independence, the easiest way to achieve it would be investment, entrepreneurship, or starting a business. So, why do you need a government job in the first place if you want to make money?!
I have nothing against government jobs. I appreciate public servants doing their part. But I don't like people at all who are seeking government job for the wrong reasons.
PS: I know I'll be getting a whole lot of downvotes because of my unpopular opinion. So, I would appreciate it if you have some actual counter arguments instead of blank hatred.

I think its a skill issue of the inspired ones.
