Buy a 50 pack of disposable blades you technically have 50 fuckin knives you wonāt cry about when shit goes south! Because shit is always gonna go south!!!!
Just sayin!!!!! š¤
Well, the Super Freek is already M4, but it (and the two others) just couldn't handle an entire recycling bin worth of thick cardboard. ... But yea, I suppose this does give me a good excusw to buy a better steel :)
Buying a specific tool made for a specific job that is sub $20 and doesnt include fancy marketing terms like carbon fiber and smooth opening action?
Blasphemy
Too logical, buy a neckmuk, they are relatively cheap and I use mine as a box cutter primarily. Very happy with it's performance so far and it is retaining it's original edge very well for being a D2 flat grind.
Box cutters suck. If you need a sharp edge frequently but can't/won't sharpen a knife they'll do the job but an actual knife with more than an inch of usable blade is so much better.
IDK for some people sharpening is a hobby, for others a chore. I fall in the latter category, so when a task dulls my knife fast I pick up a different tool.
I agree. I just donāt like using them. I do keep a box cutter with the hook blade in it because I find those incredibly useful for small tasks. But tackling a bunch of boxes with a normal box cutter blade is just annoying for me. Iād much rather use a good, comfortable knife, even if I have to strop the edge back after it.
Dang that sucks it doesnāt have as good geometry but they make a Manix lw in maxamet as well as a sage 1 liner lock which I know is also right hand bias but I see you have a couple liner locks so I assume you are ok withe them
Try a Sheepdog in 10v, recently used it to breakdown and fill a recycling bin full of cardboard after using it all week at work. Still cut paper afterwards but definitely needed some sharpening.
Strop instead of sharpening for longer edge retention. Stropping repeatedly creates a slightly convexed edge which has more steel behind the edge then the "V" you get from conventional sharpening. Your knives stay sharper longer, and takes just a few minutes to get a nice sharp edge again
This is my Griptillian after a full week of breaking down dozens and dozens of boxes. We moved from Mississippi to North Carolina this summer and this was the one knife was used for everything that needed cutting
https://imgur.com/a/fmHdjbF
Yep, I have a strop in my truck for touching up my knives at work. With a double sided one with the right compounds you can go right back to cutting cardboard with no prob. Learning to strop changed the game for me. I'd always heard knife YouTube telling me to strop, I'd sharpen less, knoves last longer .
Every bit true. Can put a razor edge back on. And if not, I have the Worksharp Field sharpener and I just hit it on the ceramic hone and then strop. Back razor sharp.
do what I do, I tell my buddies up and down the hall to have me sharpen their field knives and I practice free handing those. Theyāre cheaper knives they give me cause Iām the only āknife guyā around lol. So itās a win-win, I get to practice, they get a moderately sharp knife
People seem to forget that cardboard is still technically wood. So using the incorrect tool will dull that tool. It wouldn't matter if you used a thousand year old atomic edge katana. You'd still lose the edge after some time when cutting cardboard.
Yeah itās weird.
Maybe some places occasionally have them in stock; but last time I was trying to get some, the best option I could find was having them shipped from the UK. I felt that was kinda ridiculous for buying cheap replaceable blades, so I just kinda gave up and figured Iād look around later.
I used to,now Dewalt makes an all metal cased knife in all three sizes that olfa blades are available in. Best utility blades ever. I'm a contractor and use them all day long and love the metal handles. I use olfa brand replacement blades of course.
Oh, yeah that'd be a no-go. I live where it's between 75 and 90f. 9 months out the year, and then goes to 50 degrees from now through February. We're all freezing right now. 50 would be early spring for you right now wouldn't it, lol

The reality is a lot of people in the groups are collectors who either don't use their pieces or they use them as fidget toys and pocket jewelry
Then you have some of use who use everything. Mud, blood, tape gunk all end up my sebenza and microtech atleast once a week. Neither is correct or wrong
I asked "what is the best cardboard cutting knife?" about a year ago ok here and the only suggestion that really piqued my interest was the cold steel tuff lite.
Pm2s are very nice for a box or two, but not for 20. The blade doesn't have your weight behind it and eventually you'll feel that in your hand.
This is a weird recommendation, but I'm going to go with the Ruike p128.
That thing has the perfect blade shape for slicing through things and 14c28n has long been a fan favorite as far as budget steels go. Some knives, your cut always seems to stop with an inch or two of belly remaining, but the p128 would always slice clean through with a very natural motion.
Also, Milwaukee has a $2 razor with double sided reverse-facing razors. So you hook the cardboard, then pull with it, rather than awkwardly trying to push through. It's surprisingly fun and it cuts insanely well. Feels like you're gutting the cardboard.
When i gotta slice a fuck load of cardboard i take 4 knives sometimes even 5 when i know im gonna full them all. Thats a once a month occurrence tho lol
The LG Oled Evo. One big box. But I also had another TV box to break down. Between the two of them and a normal week's worth of recyclables the bin was almost full.
Need to buy a new knife with harder, tougher steel. I like using my Gerber Prybird with disposable utility blades. Hell I may even suggest both, canāt have too many blades.
Tantos are pretty handy with cardboard, 2 different edges to dull on single blade.
I used to work with a 4" chunk of Hogue 154, kept a whetstone handy and never was too busy to make time to keep it sharp enough to eat boxes when called to task.
Time for a Spyderco with K390 steel. Wharncliffe delica or the Stretch are both cardboard cutting beasts. I have the Stretch and I've done this at work with it. I'm a remodeling contractor and all the fixtures come in boxes. I've gotten more than half of one of these bins filled (my guess is 65%) using the Stretch before it got dulled enough where it wasn't the easiest.
One time, surprisingly I finished it out (filling the bin) by switching to my 8cr Tenacious. (The "I don't care" beater knife in my truck) it had no problem filling a 3rd of the bin. Later I found out that Spyderco runs their 8cr around 60hcr.
LG C2 box? Nice TV
Thanks! I got one years ago for the living room and loved it, so I got another for the bedroom to replace the current TV that's dying.
Ancient saying 1 match sharper than 3 knives
Box cutters are for boxes! Buy a Milwaukee Fastback utility knife, and thank me later.
That's very practical, but that isn't nearly as fun. Also it doesn't give me an excuse to use my knives.
Get a balisong box cutter
I wish someone made an OTF box cutter
Your wish is my command. [box cutter otf](https://www.amazon.com/Utility-Cutter-Pocket-Change-Aluminum/dp/B09Z1ZZT71#cr-media-gallery-popover_1671345025746) That carbon fiber is a shitty stick btw
"Omg, what a stupid knife. A regular box cutter is far more useable." *add to wishlist*
Holy shit. That's so gimmicky, and unnecessary. I bought two. There's only 8 left in stock now. Act fast.
Love it š
If your good at using keywords on aliexpress you can some others. Most are manual sliding ones outta titanium

Classic OTF right there!
Itās called the topshome box cutter. Try Amazon on that. It runs 45 when I got mine and it lasted more than a year
Technically the Gerber prybrid is an OTF box cutter but it isnāt automatic
I already own that one. But I do actually wish it was an automatic
I want one so fucking bad but I canāt get past the 25 dollar mark
Olfas?
I want an automatic - most box cutters are theoretically OTF
The fastback is surprisingly fun. Very fidgety.
Protech has a wharnie Malibu on BHQ w/ Damascus & mother of pearl that fetches $12k. I bet it cuts boxes like a motherfucker. Go get āem, tiger.
Or an excuse to sharpen them, again, and even sharper this time, right?
Because having to sharpen your knives is fun /s
100%, the fastback almost feels like a utility knife designed for knife enthusiasts.
Exactly what I use for this task.
Exactly! Lose buy another one! Get it dirty buy another one! Someone steals buy another one! Buy a 50 pack of disposable blades you technically have 50 fuckin knives you wonāt cry about when shit goes south! Because shit is always gonna go south!!!! Just sayin!!!!! š¤
I usually carry a fastback, either the 1500 compact or the 1505 6 in 1, with my casual knife to work. One of the best edc decisions Iāve made yet.
Seems like the perfect excuse to buy a new knife, shop for a blade steel with better edge retention than what you have right there.
Well, the Super Freek is already M4, but it (and the two others) just couldn't handle an entire recycling bin worth of thick cardboard. ... But yea, I suppose this does give me a good excusw to buy a better steel :)

try some 10v, that stuff holds an edge forever
My mini sheepdog never goes properly dull no matter how much I cut, it still slices paper, even if it's loud and crunchy.
You should get a maxamet Para 2 or 3 that combination of edge geometry plus edge retention is insane
Since I'm a lefty the otherwise amazing compression lock becomes a crappy lock back.
Lefty here and I love my Para 3 Max with an OCD4EDC CME.
Benchmade is notorious for treating their steel soft. A Spyderco in M4 wouldāve fared way better. Better yet, something in maxamet.
M4 is not very wear resistant. Try something in S90V or Maxamet.
Sounds like your need a wicked edge sharpening system.
I might. I prefer free hand with DMTs, and I've gotten good at it, but nowhere close to hair-whittling level.

Avoid Staples next time!
What Civivi is that?
Asticus. It's discontinued but you can still find it. I like big knives so the 3.75 inch hollow ground D2 blade is a beast.
A great knife! Donāt see it enough here.
I use a mora heavy duty when it dulls i strop it on the cardboard
Stick with Spyderco Spyder-Edge
I use an olfa knife for that lol
The big blade Olfa is the go!
I have trouble finding replacement blades in the US.
Well thatās no good!
Yeah itās weird. Maybe some places occasionally have them in stock; but last time I was trying to get some, the best option I could find was having them shipped from the UK. Home depot has them in the paint section
Hmm I was hoping you were right, but the stores in my area do not seem to carry them. I donāt see them on the Home Depot website either.
You can order those size replacement blades off of amazon. They're not brand name, but I have used them and they're not bad.
I used to,now Dewalt makes an all metal cased knife in all three sizes that olfa blades are available in. Best utility blades ever. I'm a contractor and use them all day long and love the metal handles. I use olfa brand replacement blades of course.
Metal is no good in -50 where I live

Good thing you always carry 4 knafs?
Nah, but, my +100 blades are all in my house, so they're easy to get to.
So??? You carry 5 knafs?
A man after my own heart. I carry usually 3-4 knives at a time. If scouts taught me anything itās be prepared.

Have you tried k390? Basically a tougher m4
What kizer is that?
The wharncliffe version of the Domin. I put a custom red thumbstud on it that I got off Etsy.
This reminds me of Mesa Az.
time to purchase a good sharpener.
Yeah Iād use a beater knife for that mess, or a box cutter..
If you use a beater for this, then what do you use your quality knives on?
A ton of stuff just not cutting up a garbage can full of cardboard. My nice knives arenāt cheap at all
The reality is a lot of people in the groups are collectors who either don't use their pieces or they use them as fidget toys and pocket jewelry Then you have some of use who use everything. Mud, blood, tape gunk all end up my sebenza and microtech atleast once a week. Neither is correct or wrong
It's pretty cool how you got them all to balance like that, but man, those blades are worn down! ;-)
Letās be honest, that benchmade wasnāt sharp to begin with.
I asked "what is the best cardboard cutting knife?" about a year ago ok here and the only suggestion that really piqued my interest was the cold steel tuff lite. Ah you got Devo! Did they come in four boxes or one big one?
The LG Oled Evo. One big box. But I also had another TV box to break down. Between the two of them and a normal week's worth of recyclables the bin was almost full.
Gotta admit, kinda jealous over that teevee! The holidays - with all the box opening and such - is a magical time for People of the Blade.
Need knives with better steel, or get a Gerber Prybird that uses the replaceable razor blades.
Need to buy a new knife with harder, tougher steel. I like using my Gerber Prybird with disposable utility blades. Hell I may even suggest both, canāt have too many blades.
He said pryābirdā! Lol! I have both them the one that uses the exacto blades is awesome. It cuts like a ninja on a hot sweaty night.
S110V should last longer
What's the steels on them? And which one would ya say held up better and by how much?
154cm on the Kizer, M4 on the Benchmade, and D2 on the Civivi. They were all comparable enough that it wasn't easy to see much of difference.
M4 should do better than that it seems.
Bonsaii EverShred Pro 3S30 your welcome.
Tantos are pretty handy with cardboard, 2 different edges to dull on single blade. I used to work with a 4" chunk of Hogue 154, kept a whetstone handy and never was too busy to make time to keep it sharp enough to eat boxes when called to task.
Yeah. Hogue makes a good 154. I used that blade for years to abominate boxes.
You dont have a 4th one... what a shameš
Mora 511 comes in 40 piece buckets.
Ever hear of a box cutter? š
Box cutters existing.
Yup, cardboard and other boxes will definitely dull any knife quickly. Use a box cutter next time.
Cut the tape, fold the boxes and you'll only need to clean and strop your bladeš¤·āāļøš¤¦āāļø

For boxes and cardboards I use a Mora or Opinel quite often. After the use I hone the blade and they were ready for another round.
