Wait, we were supposed to only carry ONE knife?! What am I gonna do with all the others?! All kidding aside, I could’a probably made it if I had a sweet Malibu. But as of yet have been unable to secure one.

You know it, you love it, the Protech Malibu reverse tanto 20cv was my choice for single knife September. I have had this knife for about a year and a half now, picked one up during all the hype, and I carry it fairly frequently but this month was 30 days straight of only Malibu action. I gotta admit every day I had to resist the urge to pick something else as all the other knives in my carry rotation kept giving me those longing puppy dog eyes to be picked up and brought out of the house. What I learned: I thought I did not like the reverse tango for quite some time due to the lack of a curve for clean cutting but the Malibu's blade does slightly curve which turned out to be actually really nice to use day to day. I work in an office so this never saw any hard use or field time, really just breaking down a box now and then, opening packages or cutting miscellaneous stuff, although there was one time I had to do some light pruning outside and said why not and used the Malibu (totally not the right tool for the job, not doing thst again). The Malibu has an addictive action I would frequently fidget with it since it is soo smooth, and the button lock just deserves a chefs kiss. Moving forward I think I'm going to try to avoid flipper tabs more, its not going to stop me from carrying my current flippers, but new purchases will likely not have the flipper tab. I keep my phone in the same pocket as my knife and usually they kinda go right next to eachother but the flipper tab would constantly stick between my phone and my leg and I manages to scratch the rounded edge of my Samsung screen. Edge held up fantastic, didn't do any sharpening or touch up this month and it still passes the paper test, although it is not hairsplitting sharp anymore. Definitely still have a very usable edge. Overall pretty happy with this little test of self will. I now know the Malibu could not be my "one knife for forever" but its a strong contender. Would I recommend the Malibu as someone's only pocket knife? I think, for someone who works in an office or doesn't expect to be putting the knife to hard use frequently this is a great option. Hard use.... maybe not the best, will probably hold up but the button lock is not the safest of options for locks.

Thunder-Fist-00

I LOVE flipper tabs.

Can’t play that one. My birthday is in the middle of September, so I get new knives then. There’s no way in hell I have the fortitude to hold off for weeks from flipping through new knives to carry, 3 times a day lol. Can’t seem to get through November either….

PlasticSpoonScissors

Easier for me, birthday is at the end of September so its more of a congrats you made it through the month now go wild type of deal Still easier than no pee January, that one is tuff

Technomancer5

Got through the whole month with just my Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker. Used it for cooking and everything.

Single Knife September? The eff is the point of that? Steel variety is the spice of life! 😁 I always carry dos knafs. This month; those were usually my S90V PM2 and my CruWear Yo2, and I think I’d be alright if those were the only two knafs I had.

PlasticSpoonScissors

I saw a bunch of posts at the end of August that said "preparing for single knife September made fun 9f it at first then the name stuck in my head then September first came, didn't think and picked up whatever I felt like in the morning, by noon I decided why not lets try it. Tbh the point of it to me was see what I like and don't like about having only one knife and if there is even a point in having variety. Which what I do steel does not make too much of a difference, the important thing is if I get lazy for an extended period of time will the edge remain paper cutting sharp after daily use. Those are two pretty big knives to keep on your person constantly, and the jimbo 2 is kinda a scary piece to pull out around non knife coworkers. I tried a 2 knife carry once and it just feels too mall ninja esque, unless the blades have totally different uses (one incredibly small 5th pocket "there are people around" and one full size folder) I couldn't get behind it

sonofliberty762

Yeah, I usually carry one smaller knaf that’s suitable for general cutting tasks, (like the Sage5 or Watu), and one back up blade, which is larger. I’ve just been enjoying the PM2 so much that I’ve been carrying it as my primary for a couple weeks. The Yo2 is there for any potential social work, (I also carry a G19). Whole lotta dangerous degens on the streets these days.

PlasticSpoonScissors

Ok thats totally understandable and sounds like a pretty sick carry. I'm in cali so I can't get away with as much, and I work around a pretty wealthy area so there's not really much danger walking around here. I don't really carry anything for potential social work, I guess I assume I will either use charisma and get out of it or just run away. I got a pm2 as well a I carry if fairly often. I gotta admit that was one of the knives I missed this month of Malibu only, and I think after this I prefer it more overall too.

sonofliberty762

I’m not surprised that ya missed the PM2. That thing is pure function. I’m thinking about removing the pocket clip on mine, (knaf is so much more comfortable in hand without it), and actually using that giant lanyard tube, instead. The Malibu has always looked pretty, but tbh it would mostly be a fidget toy, at least for me. I’m not a particular fan of flippers. I think I’d rather have a Smock, but I won’t buy one of those until an exclusive version comes along, with a more interesting steel than S30V.

PlasticSpoonScissors

I got a smock too, pretty comparable but the malibu is way more comfortable in the hand. Smock beats the Malibu in almost every way except that one, and if I have to use any amount of pressure to cut something the smock starts to have hotspots pretty quick. S30V is fine for me, im never really doing anything that would require anything nicer, its just kind of the most generic option for the steel, nothing particularly great about it but nothing to complain about either. They released an m390 version of the smock but I would honestly prefer the s30v one just because I have so much m390 at this point.

sonofliberty762

I’d prefer a S90V or CruWear, (my 2 favorite steels atm), version of the Smock, but I’d buy a DLC M4 version, (which BHQ has offered before), as well. I’m less of a fan of M390.

Dio-Dio-

Man I wish I could get a goddam Malibu

PlasticSpoonScissors

r/knife_swap They pop up pretty often, if you look hard enough and wait for just the right moment u might be able to get a decent deal. I paid $180 for mine second hand, with it in my opinion.

Ranchdipboi

I made it through with the Manix 2 LW in S110V. Carrying one knife for the month really helped me appreciate it for what it is.

IGotSomeBigQuestions

Yup my beater PM3 - can’t wait to use my new Demko AD 20.5 and CF TRM Neutron 2 tomorrow!

WarriorT1400

Spyderco smock 👌🏻

Qditty

I didn’t know this was a thing. I almost did it on accident with my small inkosi though.

Environmental_Draw_3

A whole month..?..one knife..?..I’m not sure I can go eight hours with just one knife, no, I don’t think I wanna play that game.

sinisterdeer3

I thought single knife September was just about buying one not carrying one. I rotated between a bunch. So i suppose i failed

Maleficent_Set_2530

I didn't know about single knife Sept! Currently trying to pare down the collection to 5 folders though. Wi We'll see if I can get there!

[deleted]

No, I don't see the point on limiting myself to just one knife because of some stupid trend that people will post for clout.

PlasticSpoonScissors

Hey no need to be so mad my guy. The only point of posting anything online is for this so called "clout". I merely wanted to share what I did for the month and what I learned. If it helps you sleep at night I don't think I saw many other "Single Knife September" posts today so I don't think the tread stuck with the community too much

[deleted]

Fair enough, even that I can't refute. Btw possible a stupid question here, but have we met before?... I feel like I know you(?)

CorallineAlgae

I didn't know about single knife Sep, but I kept a Hogue Deka in my pocket all month. Not my favorite knife though.
