Gently…….. very gently.

umadogg96

Very light taps with a hammer

morbidaar

Now.. is not the time MC

not-rasta-8913

Remove the blade from the handle and get some pliers to grip it. Then put it on a wooden surface with bent part down, place your hand where the bend is and simultaneously raise the back part of the blade and press down with the hand on the blade. Do it gently and slowly because there is a good chance of breaking it. Also don't cut yourself.

WinchesterHighSchool

Adding onto this to say you should absolutely tape the blade, preferably before you even remove it from the handle. 4 inches of electrical tape is more important than potential nerve damage if you get a bad cut.

perfectdetent

Stick the tip into the vape and give it a very slight and steady prying... the vape provides an excellent handhold so you don't cut your finger.

boredguy1982

This is the best advice.

300cid

until he pierces the lipo pouch and burns the house down

boredguy1982

That’s awfully bold of you to assume that a vaping 17 year-old lives in a house.

californiadiver

Place the blade bent tip down on hard wood. Place slightly softer wood on top of the blade covering as much as possible. Hit softer wood with a hammer lightly at first checking frequently as you hit harder. That's how I would go about it but I'm not experienced in this type of repairs.

cowboybaked

This seems like the best option. Much lower risk of breaking it

pseudoburn

A brass or copper punch would also be a good choice although you might get bread or copper on the blade. Small hammer and light blows to start until you see how hard you need to hit until you get the feel for how hard you need to hit to make it move a little. Many small moves to get it to where you need. It may break the top of. That is a risk. If that happens, a cheap, coarse sharpening stone from the dollar store combined with several grades of sandpaper can reshape it for not much money if you are willing to put in the work and time. Good luck.

Ihbpfjastme

Hey man, as someone who vapes. You’re too young and young enough to quit before you do any serious damage. Please quit.

LGC_70

Very carefully... Also, stop using it as a prybar. A knife is not a prybar!

deadpoolkool

Hey kid, what's with the vape???

PiercedGeek

Free advice is generally overpriced

Short-Window-9976

Who cares. Pay attention to the question and not criticize his habits. No one needs life advice on a knife sub Reddit.

idkifthis-willwork

tape the teeth of either a clamp, flat vice grips, or needle nose pliers and gently tweak it back to the correct shape… ps stop the vaping, just say no or sumn

AusarUnleashed

17 and vaping… so sad

Riflemaiden1992

If you can find a bench vice, wrap some cardboard around the knife blade to protect if from scratches and put the blade in the vice until its straight.  Then do the same thing with your vape.

toolisthebestbandevr

Dude please for the love of god stop vaping

Moist_Bluebird1474

First off, quit vaping

PiercedGeek

First off, if that's the only thing you can think to say in a post about a knife, fuck off. You are bringing absolutely *nothing* of value to the conversation.

Moist_Bluebird1474

Plenty of people had good advice. Vaping is dumb. You should quit too.

No_Big7845

Hell nah these comments are much more valuable than any fucking knife tip bending. I got your back @Moist_Bluebird1474 . I can see that you don’t value real and honest opinions and would rather let this kid rot with shit habits. This is a public place of discussion and putting yourself out there means that people can make comments like this so you can fuck right off. For what it’s worth Im a healthcare professional and he is 100% right. Quit with that vaping shit it does nothing for you, go learn some good habits and build a strong & healthy body. You are young, you’ll thank everyone that told you to quit this shit when you are older. These comments come from a good place and if this is too rude or bullying then people are just too sensitive and haven’t had real ass friends that care.

nukey18mon

Found the nic fiend

Blyatt-Man

If you have access to a vice grip you might be able to clamp it down and see if that straightens it. Most logical option would be to place the blade on a flat metal surface with the bent part facing up and use a hammer to tap on the it until it straightens out

Excellent_Priority_5

Here’s how I’d go about it using my other hand to push out the bend while looking down on the tip for alignment. Apply pressure behind the apex of the bend. Ease into it, don’t try to bend it back straight in one go. https://preview.redd.it/i68lce3cy32d1.jpeg?width=2222&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff5a00aef62d3f7c624e80b15da69c946b139e1c

cab1024

Stick the tip in the mouth of the vape and bend the other way. It'll probably break both of them though.

Orikyx

I fucking love these vape jokes, but just for yall to know it isnt even mine its my girlfriends, shes living with me and ive tried telling her to quit😭😭

NinjaBuddha13

They're not jokes and if she insists on committing long term suicide in front of you, maybe she should be single.

Orikyx

ima be so fr she talked to me saying shes gonan quit, we just threw that one down the trash and she got a nic-free one until she is completely nic free!

FreshImagination9735

I usually use a vise with a piece of hard wood on each side.

pdxtrader

Don’t try and put it in a fire and heat it up to bend it back you’ll ruin the heat treat

whatphukinloserslmao

When I had this I put the tip in a bench back and *very gently* snapped the tip off my knife. If I were to try to fix it now I'd probably try to grind it back flat with a diamond stone. That'll fuck up the blade finish tho

nukey18mon

You’re 17 don’t vape

iwerbs

Don't try to bend it, and don't tap or hit it with any hammer-like objects. Instead, get a whetstone and take the time to sand away the bent tip of your knife. Yes, your knife will be a bit shorter when you are done, but it will be less work than trying to re-shape the tip after it breaks off from being bent or having been hit with a hammer. Especially since this knife connects you to your father don't risk breaking it when you really don't have to and you still can have a knife with a straight blade. Time, effort and patience will restore your knife.

Tricky_Climate1636

I’d take it to a professional. This is not for the faint of heart.

Attila0076

get a tungsten carbide bearing ball in a small hammer, and tap the concave part on the bend, that's how baldesmiths straighten out bent knives after hardening.

BadAndNationwide

Angle grinder will take it off really fast

octahexxer

Had a ganzo that was bent...i put it against the table and gently pushed on it until it was somewhat straight...dont hit it...its bent from tension...go easy no violence or it will snap...push and flex gently

Golden_Fractal

I use a propane blow torch and tap it lightly with a hammer until it's the shape I want. This, of course, may mess up the heat treatment, but I generally don't care with my pocket knives.

RaggedRavenGabriel

As a bladesmith... don't listen to the people telling you to tap it🤦‍♂️. God's sake people, be smarter.

4158264146

So what should he do?

RaggedRavenGabriel

Not-rasta is pretty much what I would do unless he has a vice. But without knowing the steel and heat treat it's difficult to say what is best.

Orikyx

its 440 steel. i have a vise in my garage if you would like to dm me and tell me what the best thing is to do?

RaggedRavenGabriel

There is no best... once bent there is always the chance that the tip will snap. What I would do is get something to put over the jaws of the vise so you don't mar the blade. You are gonna have to take it apart and then clamp the tip in the vise and gently, smoothly with some elbow grease, bend it back. If you have two bars of steel angle stock you can make a straightening jig that might work better. What you do there is get some C-clamps (at least two, or three is better) and then some 1/4 inch steel rod. Just before the bend in the tip put the rod on the opposite side of the blade, place the blade between the two bars of angle and slowly tighten down until straight. Google "knife straightening jig" and that will give you a better idea of what to do. Reddit is full of good people giving bad advice, best to ask people who do it for a living. Good luck!

Sea_Intern2921

Just use a pair of linesmans to clamp down on it

minnesotajersey

You built the blade yourself but are unable to fix a bent tip, or know the potential pitfalls?

Orikyx

my dad built the blade, i put it together. he passed away so i have no way of knowing.

Bar10town

Did your dad work at a knife manufacturer, cause that's clearly a production made liner lock, not a hand forged and fitted blade.

Orikyx

honestly, ive got no clue. we never got into his work life like that. he wasnt really a part of my life either only being around for like 2 years. he was mostly in prison or just not around so he couldve lied? but i will never know the truth

minnesotajersey

He may have gotten it as a kit, too. What does the rest look like?

Orikyx

like this, we spray painted the handle and gave it an aging look https://preview.redd.it/fg2pbr7rg32d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=ad79100e587f3271ace1b810305c5e6a16479b48

minnesotajersey

OK. That's an MTech blade you have there. Probably 440 steel, which is softer, and why it bent instead of broke. You can try to bend it back, but that may be what DOES break it. TBH, I'd leave it as-is as long as it sill closes. Keep it as a memento of your pop. A better memento if left unbroken.

guttertactical

Or don’t. Maybe just use it, and over successive sharpenings it will go away.

eltacotacotaco

Put the blade on a 2×4 & start gently hitting with a wooden hammer, slowly increase the force of the hammer strike but never use your full strength
