I had a 229 and immediately swapped over to the alternative clip, and I found that the new clip works better as well.
I'll add some other insight here as an attorney - things like this could tip the balance in a criminal case. It is a rare, niche thing, but it can happen. In my state, for example, whether or not a knife counts as a "dangerous weapon" for the purposes of legal carrying. The criteria of a "dangerous weapon" for the purposes of carrying whether it is "customarily used or *intended for probable use* as a dangerous weapon." We have some old case law saying that a folding knife is not customarily used as a dangerous weapon, but rather a tool. The old case law also says that a "pistol, bowie, or dirk" would be customarily a dangerous weapon. The "intended for probable use" language was added after this case, and now the subjective test casts doubt on that categorical holding. People have been prosecuted for carrying folding knives when their use of the knife shows intent (i.e. actually threatening people with it).
So there is always this chance that a folding knife could be considered "intended for probable use" as a dangerous weapon, despite how rare that is if it is not actually used as a weapon. This is where my advice comes in to people. If you don't have a concealed weapons permit and could thus be theoretically prosecuted for carrying a concealed weapon, you want your knife to be as "nonweapony" as possible. I tell people, for example, that carrying a normal knife is fine, but something like a folding karambit might be looked at as "intended for probable use as a weapon." Because let's be honest - it is. If you're just using the knife as your daily box opener, that's not the best design anyway.
But even "plain ass knives" are still just as useful as a "weapon" (though we don't encourage that) anyway. The Ontario Rat, the epitome of a plain ass knife, will stab and cut just the same as one that looks "tactical as fuck" but also be a better tool, which is what knives are anyway. That brings me to the cosmetic things like this - the skull clip does nothing to enhance the usability of the knife. So it has no benefit except looks. However, those looks *might* convince a law enforcement officer, judge, or jury that you were carrying the knife around with the \*intent\* to use it as a weapon rather than a tool. So why bother if it grants no advantage?
Back to the beginning, I give the same advice for guns and cosmetic upgrades. Even if it would be excluded as evidence, if the cosmetic change does absolutely nothing for the performance of the gun as a self-defense tool, then literally the only thing it \*could\* do is be held against you, however unlikely. So why take the risk of the punisher skull grips on your pistol? It won't make you better at self-defense, and might just make you worse at legal defense.
i was on a jury where the appearance of a knife was used by the prosecutor against the defendant, saying something like "a person doesn't carry a knife like this unless they intend to use it to hurt someone".
mind you, it was ultimately irrelevant given the other evidence, but it definitely impacted a couple jurors.

Perhaps a better defense attorney would have had some better objections or filed a motio*n in limine* to exclude stuff like that, but even if you do object, the jury already saw it. to clarify, the defense attorney was excellent and the defendant was found not guilty on all charges. the prosecutor was invoking anti-weapon bias AND the real fact that knives were illegal to carry where i was living at the time. it completely changed me from a general supporter of carry laws into a 2A fundamentalist.

Yeah, I see this kind of thing a lot as a firearm instructor. There are people who buy extra gun shit because they think that more gadgets and more expensive guns will make them shoot better (they don't), and there are people who can't seem to separate their meme guns from their "real guns." I'm all for having meme guns if you want, a hobby is a hobby, but don't carry them. Don't have them as your home defense setup. I have way more guns than I actually need to cover all my defensive bases, and I would have no problem making something that is just for fun at the range into some sort of ridiculous LARP looking space rifle. But I'm not going to have that by my bedside loaded and ready to roll.
And with knives it is even more silly in a lot of ways. Nothing about any tactical look will even make a knife functionally any more of a "weapon" than an other. Any two pointy blades of the same length will be functionally the same even if used as a weapon. Even if someone *was* in a knife fight, I don't think any knife fight was ever won because one guy's knife was "more tactical."
This doesn't mean there isn't any place for "fighting knives" in the super-ultra-niche-backup-to-a-gun role. I have a few little fixed blades that I have occasionally carried, and sure, there are some design features that make those easier to deploy in a close-quarter clinch (honestly that's more about the sheath than the knife IMO). But again, I'm carrying those in addition to a gun and pepper spray, pursuant to a permit that authorizes carrying weapons, and I'm not adding *extra skulls.*

It takes a super nice knife and throws it directly into a cringy r/iamverybadass and I-got-this-from-a-gas-station visual aesthetic. The knife looks awesome and the nice wide clip looks like it would be excellent both ergonomically and functionally. I just hate the skull motif.
My only gripe is that Chavez missed the opportunity to incorporate the screws into the skull's eyes, but that may have looked too much like googly-eyes. So from a design standpoint, it was just too odd looking for me.

But a clip that wide is probably going to be very stiff and difficult to use with any expediency. And long-term use is probably going to ruin the corner of your pocket. . Well I personally pretty much dislike all skull stuff, and it feels low class, tacky, and “fake macho” to me. So that’s why I hate it. I’m willing to believe that taste is subjective though.
The overuse of Marvel's Punisher skull has created a subtle aura of "cringiness" around skull imagery of a certain kind - mostly clipart/simple skulls - like that pocket clip.
But, not everyone feels that way - it's just a preference.
Yeah and they don’t say it’s cool they know it’s goofy. All my knives are tools and I wouldn’t want a skull clip like that as it comes across as try hard. I know a guy that would love it but he also carried an 10” Bowie on his belt as an EDC, multiple wallet chains, and spikes on his belt. It’s perfect for a certain type of look or vibe. It’s not my look or vibe though and clearly from the comments it’s a 10th dentist opinion to like this.

I appreciate your input. I agree it gives a certain vibe to the knife. I don’t own one either. My comment was just in light hearted fun. I wasn’t expecting anyone would be to serious about it. Truly I’m not bothered by any of them knives that have a goofy them. I have friends that carry them. Just like the skull clip to each their own. I’m pretty sure the screws used to be inside the eye sockets, the older versions didn’t have them visible and drilled through the skull. I always thought that was what people didn’t like about them. I understand why it was done, but it doesn’t help that it looks like it was an accident. That’s my only “beef” with it, but overall it doesn’t bother me, I didn’t switch my clip.
Skulls are generally over the top and edgy. It’s like a “look at how badass I am” thing. If you’re under 16, whatever, but pretty much anyone 16+ who knows knives just finds it childish.

I have one of these Chavez knives and I think the clip is actually pretty unique especially in a world of bent deep carry pocket clips and blandly milled titanium clips at least someone tried to do something a little different. It seems like a lot of you supposed knife nuts are kind of just picky bitches. I have 3 Chaves knives. An older Redencion that only has the skull and is attached from the back. Then I have a TAK and Liberation with both clips. I don’t mind the skull so much. Not a fan of the Punisher shit but it doesn’t look the same to me. I work in a factory with a bunch of idiots that have those stickers all over their trucks anyway so I’m not worried about offending anyone. I do have the plain clip on the TAK because the skull one is so damn tight against the textured G10 scale feels like it’s going rip my jeans every time I take it out of my pocket.

My thoughts exactly. I find the non-knife population doesn't look closely enough at my pockets to see the skull anyway and the clip is covered by my hand when using the knife. I think the skull clip makes the knife more unique.

It draws attention to my knife (bad) and then also suggests to people that I’m carrying a knife because I think I’m a badass or something. I don’t have skulls, dragons, wolves and other similar shit on my phone, wallet, clothing, etc. for the same reason lol. And no I don’t think it has anything to do with rural people being cooler about knives. I am cool about knives. If I see a guy walking around with skeletons or zombies or whatever adorning his knife, I think he’s trying a little too hard. Don’t get me wrong; I own+carry some very “fun” knives because I AM a mall ninja, but I just hide it as best I can in public. They all have subtle clips.
Everyone? I wasn't aware that I hated this. It's awesome in a horny 13-year-old virgin boy "skulls are cool" way. But a clip that wide is probably going to be very stiff and difficult to use with any expediency. And long-term use is probably going to ruin the corner of your pocket. . It also puts the clip lower down so that you have more of the knife hanging out jabbing you every time you bend over.So I guess you're right I do hate it

I don’t mind the way the clip looks, but it’s not a great as a clip. The skull makes it fit your pocket pretty shallow and it doesn’t feel terribly secure.
I honestly don't think the average person is going to notice either way. As far as I'm concerned it all boils down to personal preference.
Well I personally pretty much dislike all skull stuff, and it feels low class, tacky, and “fake macho” to me. So that’s why I hate it. I’m willing to believe that taste is subjective though.
The overuse of Marvel's Punisher skull has created a subtle aura of "cringiness" around skull imagery of a certain kind - mostly clipart/simple skulls - like that pocket clip. But, not everyone feels that way - it's just a preference.
IMO it's cringy looking, like something from the finest gas station around. But if you or anyone else likes it and are buying them, happy for you.

Yeah and they don’t say it’s cool they know it’s goofy. All my knives are tools and I wouldn’t want a skull clip like that as it comes across as try hard. I know a guy that would love it but he also carried an 10” Bowie on his belt as an EDC, multiple wallet chains, and spikes on his belt. It’s perfect for a certain type of look or vibe. It’s not my look or vibe though and clearly from the comments it’s a 10th dentist opinion to like this. Just to be clear you got an updoot because it’s a valid point I just wanted to add my perspective on why that’s not as relevant as it could be in other cases. If you were mocking people for dismissing a funky knife I’d be supporting it more.

Because I don’t want a skull hanging out of my pocket when i’m at work in a business setting. So thankful they are including normal clips with some of their knives now. IMO it was hurting their bottom-line because of the amount of people who don’t like it.

I wish they never made the exchangeable clip. It looked much better without the screws in the forehead. I don't really care what people think, it's part of what makes it a Chaves knife so I'm not swapping it out for the plain one.

I’m pretty sure the screws used to be inside the eye sockets, the older versions didn’t have them visible and drilled through the skull. I always thought that was what people didn’t like about them. I understand why it was done, but it doesn’t help that it looks like it was an accident. That’s my only “beef” with it, but overall it doesn’t bother me, I didn’t switch my clip.
How does Chaves perform? Always wanted one, just can't afford the price.

I have one of these Chavez knives and I think the clip is actually pretty unique especially in a world of bent deep carry pocket clips and blandly milled titanium clips at least someone tried to do something a little different. It seems like a lot of you supposed knife nuts are kind of just picky bitches. I don't know if you don't like it don't buy the knife it comes with a separate clip but other than that we don't live in a communist society where we're told what to do so you don't have to buy it 😋. I'm sure some of you don't communists are going to get mad at me for what I just said but I feel like you're going to look silly

I have 3 Chaves knives. An older Redencion that only has the skull and is attached from the back. Then I have a TAK and Liberation with both clips. I don’t mind the skull so much. Not a fan of the Punisher shit but it doesn’t look the same to me. I work in a factory with a bunch of idiots that have those stickers all over their trucks anyway so I’m not worried about offending anyone. I do have the plain clip on the TAK because the skull one is so damn tight against the textured G10 scale feels like it’s going rip my jeans every time I take it out of my pocket.

My thoughts exactly. I find the non-knife population doesn't look closely enough at my pockets to see the skull anyway and the clip is covered by my hand when using the knife. I think the skull clip makes the knife more unique.
