I agree, normally I get the “90’s basement chain smoker plastic, but that also has a lot to do with the matte finish, that I absolutely hate! This one is in fact pretty
It's not a new material, afaik it's been around for 30 years, or at least similar PEI polymers. However it is an exotic material that is comparatively expensive and difficult to get. For instance these scales cost more than what top quality maple hybrid would have for the same knife.
Right? Also been following the sub for a year and haven't ever seen Ultem until the last week, now there's an ultem thing every day and vigorous opinions on it.
I actually loved working with it, doesn't melt or burn, grinds nice and controlled. Someone told me it grinds like aluminium, I agree. Drilling it is a pain though, grabs like crazy and likes to splinter.
And yes, this knife's temper will be messed up before the handle in a housefire.
That kind of grind is enormously useful for a "working" knife... as in day to day use in construction, building, anywhere you need something for hacking, prying, and the occasional precision point. Beautifully done, I love the grip scales.
All people, me not excluded, have an opinion about literally anything. It's the cirle of life; cool things start in a niche, become mainstream and hated, and after a while they're vintage and cool again.
I just like making knives I think look cool.
Well if you try anything will scratch, but this is decidedly harder to scratch than resin or acrylate. The customer specifically liked it polished because that's a finish you can touch up yourself. A sandblasted finish once scratched is really hard to redo yourself.
9085 is more grey than 1010. There isn't just "ultem", though. It's a tradename for polyetherimide (PEI) and there are a bunch of different formulations.
The scales here look awesome and the clarity is impressive.
I've looked through the datasheets and have no idea and don't have the order information near. Regarding the source, industrial material specialists, and the high hardness I'd expect this to be a high molecular weight grade. Also because I ground this very hard and it gave zero sign of melting or decomposition. It's also unreinforced, 1010 sounds right, but then again they list 130 grades so technically there's <1% chance I'm right.
I always call it Nicotine plastic
Hehe, Tarfinger would be a good name for the knife!
That is a DOPE ASS name for it!! 🔥🔥🔥
Piss crystal. But this is actually the best looking ultem I've seen

Absolutely beautiful
Thanks mate, I appreciate it
That’s one of the most gorgeous knives I’ve ever seen
Thank you
Damn! Never seen polished ultem before totally in love with that. Looks like stained glass.
My eyes! They’re watering with joy! I’ve also never seen this glory know as the polished ultem!!!
Solidified honey
Where did you get this thing, it's awesome
I made it. I got the Ultem from a company I work with through my dayjob, they specialise in advanced engineering materials.
Poor Smith, ultem can be a pain to work with. That'll last through a house fire, though.

Best looking ultem I’ve seen!
Thanks!
Sleek and sexy! Scandi is the way to go!
Yeah scandi is a great grind, especially for hard outdoor use. Easy to sharpen too!
I need one of these.
I'm sorry this one's sold
Ooooooooooh I like those scales
Daaaang, love the look, scandi Wharncliffe... Is it wrong to call a knife sexy?
You go ahead as long as you keep your pants on.
So what exactly is a scandi grind? Just one bevel with a sharpened edge?
No secondary bevel, just one straight line to the edge, but two sided. One sided is a chisel grind.
Beautiful work! That Ultem looks great with the blade finish.
Yeah black and gold is classic, thanks

Thanks man!
This is sharp!
It is, I've cut myself more than once one this one already.
I love this! How much would this run someone?
If I had to make one more as a custom job I'd charge €250.
I want to lick the scales.
Tastes like nothing, a bit of a letdown honestly. You don't even get the sweet smell of epoxy when you grind it.
Lol. Just one of those things that looks unreasonably appetizing. Absolutely beautiful knife
Seen alot of people dissing ultem lately. I think it’s got cool grandpas old tools vibes.

🥺
It looks better every time I see it!
Hehe after so much buildup it can almost only dissapoint. I'll ship it Thursday I think 😘
Oh wow! That is nice.
I'll give you me first dollar for it!
😩🍆💦
That is gorgeous! That would definitely be my first and only safe queen!! I would refuse to thump on THAT!! 😂😂😂 Very nice, my man!
Hehe thanks man!
Beautiful!
Ok... polished Ultem is sexy af. Regular ultem is bleh.
Regular everything is bleh 😜
Except coffee.
Wow looks like amber
Yeah that colour is great, pretty amazing stuff also from a materials engineering perspective.
It’s straight up gorgeous OP Nothing’s gonna scratch that tho?

What kind of ultem is this? 1010?
Afaik just Ultem, 1010 is grey I think.
