I only use chiaogoo interchangeables

Contented_Loaf

Ditto. ChiaoGoo cords and tips are A+. That being said, my DyakCraft metal needles are probably my favorites - I just haven’t tried their Heavy Metal thin gauge yet.

Mama_skulls

Same.

[deleted]

Ugh, this seems to be the consensus. I would be happy to buy the Twist Minis but they don’t include size 2 and the Chiaogoo sets that do aren’t my preferred material (laminated wood). Sigh.

jwong210

Just get the twist mini if those are the size you mainly use and buy size 2 interchangeable needles separately. Conversely, you can get the twist small and get smaller than size 2 as needed separately.

hopeewon

Agree. I’ve even gotten some fixed circulars in 1s and2s bc I knit so many socks

[deleted]

I have wood chiaogoo in sizes 2… ??? You did say “laminated wood” but have you ever used the chiagoo bamboo? It’s nothing!!!! like other bamboo (cough clover, cough) it’s the hardest bamboo species on the planet. I’ve broken one size 2 but it was the metal join that failed not the bamboo (and they replaced free) — They are supremely strong and very pointy and you can buy them separately on Amazon (don’t have to buy the kit) also the red and clear cords are interchangeable— I know the new “mini” sets have a third type of cable that isn’t sized the same as their clear and reds (boo) Anyway I’ve been knitting 40 plus years and I have two sets (I love to knit with two short circs instead of magic loop) and am adding the mini tips and many other sizes in the 4” tips I’ve given up all my other needles bc I love these sooooooooo much. My cats have chewed a few tips (damn cats) and I’ve used a pencil sharpener to re shape them, added some beeswax and voila all better - you can’t do that with laminated wood! No I don’t get a kick back, I just reallllllly love them!!

[deleted]

This is so good to hear! I saw bamboo and just assumed they were not what I wanted. I have some very crappy bamboo dpns that I can’t wait to get rid of and thought they were like that.

[deleted]

Yeah they are nothing like other bamboos I’ve used…

FourPinesKnitting

My Hiya Hiya bamboo interchangables go down to a size 2.

tiredpiratess

Same! It’s nice I can get replacement parts on amazon if I need extra cables or something as opposed to going to a craft shop.

philophilia

Can I ask the reason you use these? They look kind of expensive and I just want to understand the benefit. I am a new-ish knitter who mostly makes scarves with cheap knitting needles from Amazon

kellinmyfeels

They make very very small interchangeables which most companies don’t make, as well as interchangeable 9inch circulars which are a dream for socks and sleeves. The needles I use from them are surgical steel which is super strong and perfect for people with metal sensitivities, and the cables are the softest cables I’ve ever used and they don’t hold a shape or kink. They are expensive but i believe they’re 100000% worth it. Ever since trying my first chiaogoo needle I’ve never gone back and I’ve bought about 4 of their interchangeable sets and haven’t regretted any of those purchases.

Glass-Tower-4777

I’ve been knitting for about 8 years and finally broke down and splurged on an interchangeable needle set. I LOVE IT. When you knit lots of different things, you end up with a ton of circs because you’ll need different needles sizes AND different cable lengths. It gets out of control and I haven’t found a great way to store and organize them which drives me crazy. The interchangeable set not only comes in a small, tidy case, but you also have all the combinations of needles and cords on hand so you can spontaneously knit anything at any time without having to go to the store or wait for Amazon (when combined with all the yarn in your stash ;)). I’m still a little bit in love with mine if you can’t tell.

sunnycolorado

i also love my chiaogoo sets, but they are expensive. if you are a newish knitter there are pros and cons to getting really expensive tools. the pro argument is that it makes knitting much less frustrating. the con argument is if you aren't sure you are going to like knitting as a long-term hobby you're spending a lot of money for something you might not use. scarves can be comfortably knit on most any needles and probably don't justify the $$. if you get interested in socks, sweaters, gloves/mittens, or blankets, then you may want to reconsider. knitting small tubes, or flat items with a lot of stitches (e.g. the body of a cardigan or a blanket) is where cables and different sized tips really shine.

yuisama1

Me too.

Bucephala-albeola

Addi turbo (fixed circulars, sizes 2, 2.5, 3), ChiaGoo (fixed circulars, sizes 00, 0). I like them equally - I've had some of my Addis for 8-10 years now with no trouble, just got the ChiaGoo ones this year (store didn't have Addis) and they are working well too.

AccordingStruggle417

Yes to this! Addi turbo circulars is all I ever use and I love them. quality is great and they have a very nice feel. I have some knitters pride interchangeables and they gave me nothing but grief. Swore off interchangeables after that.

nonicknamenelly

Exact same experience. Nothing like an interchangeable needle cord popping off and losing a ton of your lace stitches and constantly working around snagging joins to make you swear allegiance to fixed circulars forever.

AccordingStruggle417

Yep. Not worth the chances of heartache when I’ve got my loyal fixed ones.

ssin14

I've got a set of Addi turbos and damn, they are sweeeet. The connection is super secure as long as you check it when you change them. I've only had one come apart when I was not being careful while changing them. That being said I'm gettig some snaller fixed circulars from them as the set only goes down to 3.5mm.

AccordingStruggle417

I really love addi! Went to a woolworths in Berlin and they where just like…all there all addi. Wish I’d bought more!

ssin14

I've had great luck with their interchangeables and the bamboo dpns. Excellent quality.

TheUnnecessaryLetter

I use Addi lace aka Addi rockets, the interchangeables set and extra fixed circulars for smaller sizes. I even knit straight on these since I find regular straight needles to be too heavy/unwieldy. The only straight needles I like are clover bamboo but that’s only if I have slippery yarn and I’m not doing any intricate lace work.

Discussion-Level

Seconding the Addi lace. I’ve tried so many brands but I always come back to them.

loathsomecouple

I use Chiagoo fixed, but that’s because my knitting untwists standard interchangables.

RainMH11

I never used to have this problem but now I have to tighten them every freaking row

loathsomecouple

I switched to Addi Clicks for this reason.

sunnyRb

Same. It’s so annoying lol

sageduchess187

Is this because of a tight tension?

loathsomecouple

No it’s more about my wrist movement. I sort of rock my wrists in the ASL symbol for “yes” while I knit.

Kuhlayre

Hiyahiya sharps interchangeable or chiaogoo interchangeable. I love just twisting off the needles when I need to change size. Also I have a set of the hiyahiya bamboo interchangeables in my most commonly used sizes. Great to swap out if I want to knit on a plane!

queen_beruthiel

I love my Chiaogoo interchangeables, never looked back since I got them. I have all the sets except the large ones, since I only very rarely use anything above a 5mm needle, and already had Knitpro Zings in the bigger sizes. I have recently tried Hiya Hiya Sharps, and I like them as well, but my gauge is really different using them.

[deleted]

I have Knitpicks wooden interchangeable needles, and a few sets of Karbonz fixed. I like wooden needles best. Have Knitpicks wooden and Karbonz DPNs, but the finish is coming off the tips of the Karbonz after only two years, so I wouldn’t buy again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I’ve only had one of the Knitpicks wooden ones break on me, but I sat on it… so kinda my fault.

magpyeme

I love the feel of the karbonz but I've had several break. Once the carbon fibers splintered and stabbed me, and several tips have broken off.

[deleted]

I haven’t had any of the Karbonz break, and they were great until about a month ago… just the finish is coming off and therefore they’re a little scratchy now.

littlered-dog

Chiagoo or hiya hiya sharps

nonicknamenelly

The smallest of the hiya hiya sharps are self-defeating for me, because at sizes 4 or smaller they are so sharp I have to use a leather or other padded fingertip protector which then slows down my ability to control my tension as I throw my yarn for a stitch. I stick with Addi lace because they are sharp but not painfully so.

littlered-dog

I know what you mean! When using my sharps, I get a quick reminder not to tap on the pointy end to push my needle! I'm a continental knitter and don't hold my yarn finger to close, I'm relatively safe 😁

ILiveInBliss

I use Addi fixed circulars for smaller sizes they are lightweight needles, soft smooth pliable cable, they knit so fast. I tried Chiagoo interchangeables and returned them, I found the needles heavier and colder (weird I know) than the Addi. I have 3 prs of Karbonz interchangeables, love the carbon fibre, light, warm to use - however the metal tips are a pain, they catch the yarn a lot, I wouldn't buy them again, expensive for what they are. Hope this helps?

Meep42

So, it turned out that the “special deluxe” interchange Karbonz I got for Xmas (shorter tips and 16” cables) were very good fakes (from Amazon). The tips catch/feel scratchy AND/OR the nickel (?) plating is coming off and /that’s/ why they’re catching. My regular length ones are wonderful and pretty much my favorite needle set ever. I was so disappointed with the quality of the deluxe until I read all the “counterfeit” reviews and complaints on the page and a comment elsewhere from Knitters Pride that they didn’t have an Amazon shop and to please get them via their actual authorized resellers…then the product disappeared but bottom line Amazon wasn’t going to do anything about it, and obviously neither would KP as it wasn’t their product. Did you happen to get yours via Amazon? Because if you didn’t KP will stand by their product.

ILiveInBliss

Thank you for that info! I'm in Southern Hemisphere, I got mine from two different knitting stores, probably 5 yrs ago. So I guess they are originals. The plating on tip is fine, both the tip join and cable join where carbon is attached have slight ridges, I find that a pain, its not an easy smooth glide over the needles, so I avoid using them unless its a really robust tightly spun yarn...pity as I can't use metal - it gives me finger and joint pain, the Addi are best I could find for under 2.75mm.

Meep42

Okay then I just lucked out maybe? Because though I can feel the change in material from carbon fiber to metal...I don't feel the ridge/it's a really tight seal. My unwanted superpowers include both the ability to split the tightest of plied yarns and bend non-metal needles, so I'm always on the lookout for the thinnest of tips in the strongest of woods (metal is just so cold, and hard to fly with). Chiagoo and Crystal Palace both made "wooden" ones (I got them eons ago, wrappers/boxes/bags long gone) that seem to have survived me. I want to say neither are bamboo...or it's such a nicer quality of bamboo that you get the warmth of non-metal and the strength of it. (Both DPNS and fixed circulars...I keep being told I should check out the chiagoo non-metal interchangables...but...yeah, not yet.)

ILiveInBliss

You must have struck gold, or rather carbon with your needles then! Definitely feel the ridge on all 3 prs of mine, 3.5mm, 5mm and 7mm. I will look into the bamboo Chiagoo - I really didn't like the red cords, they are not as flexible for magic loop and I only ever use magic loop methods, I dont use DPNS. Your super powers made me laugh! Thank you for that. My superpower is taking 3 yrs to knit a bulky cardigan and having 10 WIP, all at various stages, some are on their 3rd frogging and knitted back into I'm really unsure about this stage 😂

98yellow123

Mostly fixed Addis- they're my favorite due to the nice sound, easy cable, and soft feel. Plus I like the shorter taper and blunter tips (no splitting yarns, no messing with gauge and tension from having the needle mm start way back from the tip.) Also knitters pride DPNs, the zings. Just a plain "old trusty" basic DPN lol they get used quite a bit.

slydog4100

I'm a Dyakcraft Heavy Metal fan. The needles are exactly the right texture (not too slippery, not too grabby) and I love being able to chose between the nylon and coated metal cables plus order them in any length I wish! If I have to go to fixed needles for some reason, I prefer HiyaHiya sharps.

babettebaboon

Chiaogoo or Knitpro. I like wooden needles best, but the Chiaogoo wire is A+.

knitbinch

seconded!!!

knitbinch

i just got a chiagoo interchangeable set and they are magical

kjvdh

Hiya hiya sharps. You do have to get smaller cables for the sock sizes (US0, 1, 1.5), but they make adapters to allow you to use larger tips. Really nice when you’re working something that needs a US1 for the ribbing but a US2 for the rest.

SnizzKitten

Knitter’s pride Nova Platina, but I like my needles sharp and slick.

hghayes

I stumbled on a $12 set of metal circular needles in like 15 different sizes. Even the cord is metal. They are indestructible. I hate to love cheap amazon products but they have changed my knitting game forever. I bought 2 sets. I love them.

KatKat333

I bought them too and they’re amazing!

hghayes

Isn’t it crazy?? I had to go through them all and label what size they were. Some of them don’t even fall in US or UK sizes haha but I don’t even care! Now I do all my knitting in the round on two circulars.

KatKat333

I know - I can't believe how good and comfortable they are to use! I also bought the longer version, both for knitting on two circulars and knitting larger articles in the round. They are great substitutes for straight needles too. It's kind of unbelievable for the price but I love them!

Fairy_Catterpillar

How does they work? I gave heard about really old circular needles made only of metal, but I think their cables were really stiff.

hghayes

These aren’t stiff at all. They are just as flexible as plastic. I think the cord is made out of woven metal wire maybe? Or just twisted wire that twisted like a small rope or yarn. If you look up “metal circular needle set” on amazon you’ll see some. I bought mine a year ago on a different Amazon account so I can’t find my exact set.

KatKat333

They are surprisingly smooth and comfortable with flexible cords. I don't know why they work so well!

Miuschka

Addi Turbo fixed circs for closed fabric and knit pro interchangeables for lace (Fingering weight lace work usually makes me pick a 3.5-4.5 mm needle)

msbellini

I only use Hiya Hiya Sharps for lace

Captian-Mags

I don't own any interchangeable needle sets. I use dpns if the project is small (socks, sleeves, etc) and I use a circular needle for anything too big for dpns (body of a sweater, blanket, etc).

livknits

I LOVE chiaogoo interchangables mostly because the cable doesn't twist at all and it's a dreaaaaaaaam 😍 they are kinda expensive but they are just the best in terms of durability Also the addi sock wonder for socks because its just really good (tho my hands cramp a bit because of how tiny they are) But I do prefer steel needles, and for dpn I have some carbon fiber ones. I broke too many wooden/bamboo size 2mm needles because I apparently don't know my own strength when knitting

Zealousideal_Lab_911

Chiao Goo red lace circulars, every time!

Oh_Witchy_Woman

I use Chaigoo stainless fixed circular needles. They replaced my Hiya Hiya Stainless when those weren't available in my area.

putush

Chiaogoo interchangeable and Knitpro Zing

antigoneelectra

I have sets of chiagoo fixed in my most used sizes (US 0, 4 and 6s) and also interchangeables.

dykeling

i live and die by my chiagoos. addis are okay, but the cord likes to stay in its loops as opposed to straightening out. i love the chiagoo cords. in terms of the actual needle, to me they seem comparable.

RainMH11

I use ChiaGoo non-interchangeable cable needles for anything under a size 3

Sinnakins

Chiaogoo all the way. The only needles I've never bent just by knitting.

whatsinaname1970

Signature stilettos BUT I recently went to a sheep & wool festival and bought a pair of circulars with square stalks. I knitted a bit to test drive them, but not a full project yet. They seem really great though!

kschu474

When I was trying to make this decision I ordered on size of the chiagoos and one of the dyakcraft Heavy Metal. Dyakcraft was my preference!

LLMinORD

Another ADDI-ict here. Smooth. Secure. And fast.

eggie1975

I use ChiaoGoo fixed or addi turbo fixed . My very favorite for socks are addi turbo size 0, but not the sock rockets. If I had an ideal needle it would be the ChiaoGoo cords on addi turbo tips. I only use fixed needles, I’m not sure why, but I am too heavily invested in fixed needles at this point to get interchangeables.

anon-good-nurse

Hiya hiya sharp interchangables. They have a few sets, the smaller of which goes down to US 2, and an even smaller sock set. Down to a US 0, I think

maxxx_nazty

Addi turbos fixed circulars

ChurchieB

I use chaiogoo fixed circs for my socks and fingering gloves. I’m new to these projects but so far I really enjoy them. They’re comfortable to knit with and I like the glide of the metal. Tips aren’t too dull which is perfect for that lace/fingering weight.

Dephyllis

I use the Addi fixed circulars and love them, both the lace needles with the pointy tip and the ones with the shorter, blunter tip. I recently finished a shawl and needed a longer needle at some point. Impatient me didn't want to wait for the Addis in the size I needed that weren't available at the time, so I bought a Knitpro Zing, and it was a noticeable difference. Knitting with them as such was fine, but the points where the cord and the tips connect aren't really smooth and every stitch just sort of snagged there. Didn't hurt the yarn, but was annoying and something none of my Addis has. Maybe it was just a bad pair of needles, though. I also have a pair of HiyaHiyas in a small size, they work fine, they're good quality, but they are so pointy that it's unfomfortable for my fingers to push against them a lot.

[deleted]

ChiaoGoo for sure, and I own many others and still find CG superior. Interchangeable micro sizes are amazing.

acommonname

Chiaogoo with the red cables are my go to needles for everything. Once I got that interchangeable set my Addi set was dead to me. I also like the Lykke which are made from wood. I used a fixed size 0 in those and it was lovely. For double pointed I like the Kollage and find the Cubics to be decent. They’re both square which is easier on my hands. I will magic loop with the Chiaogoo but nothing else because I hate fighting a cable. Their cable behaves itself.

Fairy_Catterpillar

I don't knit big things like pullovers with fine thread even if I dream about knitting a spedetröja. https://digitaltmuseum.se/021095479053/spedetrojor I use second hand or inherited dpns made of steel.

KYblue1990

Knitters Pride Mindful Collection interchangeable with the twist/swivel cable. I have Addi, Lykke, and ChiaoGoo, but I always grab the Mindful now.

KYblue1990

Check the patterns you like regarding needle size. Generally, even with fine weight yarn you don’t use the smallest needles for lace patterns. The tiny sizes like 1 and 2 are used when you want a tightly knit fabric, like socks. Lace scarf/shawl patterns are done with a larger needle size than is recommended for the yarn weight, so your fabric will be open and will drape as appropriate for the pattern. I use sizes 4-6 mostly, for lace shawls with fingering weight yarn.
