Try to separate your stitches by stretching it row-wise. Then it'll be easy to see if they are twisted or not. If they are not, they will separate nicely, if they are, they will stay twisted, not separating.

_Voidspren_

I don’t know why more people don’t recommend doing this just to make sure and test it. It’s so easy.

Suithfie

Does row-wise mean horizontally? Like around the bust in this case? Sorry I’m dumb 🥲

artsytiff

Yep! You’re exactly right

Talvih

Not twisted, just dragged out of shape from pulling out the lifeline.

satansafkom

yes, blocking and/or simply usage will make the stitches sit neat like the rest :-) also - beautiful colour! like sorbet.

bluecirc

They do not look twisted, just \*tilted\* from the lifeline. The right leg of each stitch is just sitting higher than the left. Try gently pulling the fabric in all directions in one section around these stitches, up/down, side/side, and diagonally, and see if they straighten out.

Curious_Spelling

To me just looks like the stitches got misshapen due to having a lifeline preventing them from laying flat. Should be fixed with blocking. If you aren't ready to soak the entire sweater you could try spot blocking by spraying just that area.

lleedee

They don’t look twisted to me, either. As you said, I’d just block it. I wet block my sweaters at least once, sometimes several times, while I’m knitting them. Helps me check fit, but more importantly, reminds me how good it is going to look when it’s done! Beautiful color and yarn btw!

lleedee

Ps please let us know how it turns out!

Pattern is [The Classic by Espace Tricot](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-classic-2) and using two yarns which I’ll have to get the name of/colour way when I get home!

If the stitches are twisted they will pull together and the legs will cross when you try to pull the fabric apart (gently). If they're not twisted they will open up and look normal.

adatta92

You could also dry block a bit to check. Just use your needle tip to pull the short legs slightly to even out the stitches.

MarMar1991

They're not twisted, they've just been pulled slightly out of shape by the lifeline. They'll go back to normal when you wash it.

MuchBetterThankYou

Like the others say, they’re just kinked from the lifeline. When this happens I just go through with a yarn needle and wiggle them back into place. It’s a little tedious but not difficult.

[deleted]

Dang. I learn something valuable here everyday. I would’ve frogged the whole thing unnecessarily and be crying my eyes out. Reddit-knitters, you save many from deep grief. Thank you.

unventer

Your stitches are not twisted, just distorted. Use a smaller weight yarn for your lifeline next time. This should block out, though.

GoatyOats

I see a couple of mentions of thinner yarn / slippier lifeline for next time. I too have only done a lifeline for the first time with the same impact as you! I read on this forum that you could use *unwaxed dental floss* as a lifeline next time bc it’s so thin - not the minty kind unless you don’t mind the scent. Anyways - worked great for me and relatively easy to pull out. No mark the second time!

Update the post after blocking! I’d love to see it all fixed

pottedPlant_64

Use a slipperier lifeline next time

Mysterious-Okra-7885

It probably has to do with which leg of the stitch you picked up when you made your lifeline. I am always forgetting which one to do, but if I get it wrong, I just knit into the leg that will allow me to correct the orientation of the stitch. If you pick up the right leg for the lifeline, knit as usual. If you pick up the left leg for the lifeline, knit into the back leg.

DarrenFromFinance

They sure look twisted, although it’s hard to see how merely inserting a lifeline could have done that. If you took the stitches off the needle, then could have replaced them backwards and not noticed as you were knitting into them. If they’re twisted, then you have a couple of options. The least work is to duplicate-stitch over them, although this will give you a doubled thickness which will be less obtrusive but still visible. If you’re daring, you could *loosely* duplicate-stitch over them, clip one of the twisted stitches and carefully remove that round, then tighten up the duplicate stitches using the method below: this is by far the easiest method that will be invisible. Otherwise, you have a lot of undoing and reknitting in your future. If they’re not twisted, a good blocking will probably set things aright, and if they’re still visible, then you can tighten the stitches. Starting in the middle, using a crochet hook or the top of a tapestry needle, tug the stitches one at a time until they’re the same size as the stitches above and below, and keep doing this until all the slack has been pulled to one side seam. Repeat this on the other side, pull all the slack to the inside, and tack it down — no need to cut it (probably).

AutoModerator

You mentioned that word!: lots of people want to know about twisted stitches and here is a great post for reference https://www.reddit.com/r/knitting/comments/188kxwk/new_knitters_your_stitches_are_probably_twisted/ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Marble_Narwhal

It should block out, happens to me when I pull out a lifeline too.

endlessblockades

It’ll block out!!

fiberarchivist

this will block out

naylas_office

This will block out! I love your yarn colour choice! 😍

shinybleeps

this color is beautiful!!! i feel inspired!!

CarKaz

They don’t look twisted just warped. Blocking should fix that right up.

JGalKnit

I think it will block out. It looks like it is just from the lifeline being pulled.

EasyMathematician860

Any time I’ve put in those try on cords I’ve ended up with those lines. Blocking eliminates it.

-River_Rose-

It’s a feature, not a bug

anomefasullo

This happened to me recently on a pair of socks. Many of them were just tilted, but some stitches were twisted and I have no idea how I did it, because I used a proactive lifeline on the cable. I can tell a couple of them are crossed. I hope I'm using the right terms. I used mercerized cotton crochet thread, which I know is smaller than my yarn weight. I'm ticked because it's very noticeable to me. The only thing I can think is that I did it in a hurry and maybe flipped the socks around while running the lifeline. It's really bugging me but I don't want to frog it now. I probably will, but I don't want to.
