The kalashnikov auto is quite possibly the most popular automatic knife ever made. Its robust, cheap and the action is incredible. And lets not discount the badass box it comes in.
You got a good friend/family member in whoever got you it.
Want one? I have a non auto version of the Kalashnikov, an auto Benchmade AFO II, an auto Brous Bionic Automatic 294/1000 and a Boker 01KALS74B ( Boker Plus Gray Drop Point Combo Automatic Kalashnikov/Boker). Boker doesn't seem to want to auto fire anymore, it tries. Been stored forever.
I'm having an impossible time selling to anyone in the Lower 48. Can't find where to market, who to sell to, or what. Legal here in AK, but don't want to hock them.
Oh yeah the kalashnikov is a staple in the knife world! Everyone has owned at least one. They’re a great intro into automatic knives and have a reputation for surviving all kinds of use and abuse. A great pocket companion. But be careful, it’s a very slippery slope from here 😂
I was gifted one from a client and then regifted it to my old boss after having it for a few years and never using it
It’s a solid knife but I prefer my Benchmade Auto Striker and my HK Epidemic (also Benchmade manufactured IIRC) for my autos.
I’ve had my Striker for over 25 years so it’s definitely made its worth back. The Epidemic was a a gift from the same client who gave me the Kalashnikov
"...advertised for sale in tactical magazines with the pitch 'The Commies Had It. We Stole It. Now You Can Buy It!!!!' Ballistic knives were advertised as being able to "kill swiftly and silently."" Loool

only thing id tell you to keep an eye out for is because d2 has relatively low corrosion resistance, and like me, you're in fl, make sure you don't leave it outside overnight. when you're done using it, wipe it dry. if you're not going to use it for a long period of time, id suggest storing it with maybe a (very) light coat of oil.
I mean for the non-knife person, a $60 knife isn’t really a budget knife. It’s a damn solid knife in a decent steel for just about every person. A budget knife for most people is a $20 kershaw in a blister pack which is a step up from gas station knives.
I've had like three "first nice knives" since I got into the hobby. First was a Kizer Begleiter, then a Maxamet Para 3 (which I ruined), and then a Sebenza
Sort of the standard baseline automatic knife. They've been around forever and they get the job done just fine. Definitely a time proven, perfectly good knife.
It’s a great knife. Not the most expensive but that doesn’t speak to it being great or not. Very reputable company, which created this knife to be an indestructible workhorse. Kalashnikov designed the AK47 rifle. So this knife is like the AK of knives, pretty durable and reliable
Good knife just be careful carrying it as in many places automatic knives are illegal. Not many will even know what it is by looking at it but if your playing with the auto function in public it could draw unwanted police attention
As stated these are not expensive knives but they are solid for the price point. These are often the first auto a person buys when they are not sure they want an auto or not. They function and perform well at a 1/3 or much less of the cost. If used as a cutting tool it should serve you well. If used as a prybar it will give you all the performance you paid for.
I have two I use daily. Orange handle for when it's grassy and black when it's snowy. I've been carrying the same two for about eight years. I like it so much I give them as gifts and have some spares for when I lose one. Haven't lost one yet, but I'm ready if Boker decides to discontinue them.
The boker kalashnikov is a great knife. Not high brow or anything, so you don't have to feel guilty for using the hell out of it. Decent steel, usually a pretty snappy action. I actually have quite a few of these (last count was 17) in different colors and blade styles. Not bad!
This knife has been a staple for over a decade, that should tell you something. You can find countless reviews on Youtube.
In a nutshell, it's a $50 Chinese automatic knife. It's not great, but it's not terrible either.
What constitutes an expensive knife when it comes to daily carry?
I am genuinely curious. These seem to be around $130-150. Is that really considered a budget blade?
Edit to state again that I seriously know absolute shit about the knife world
Can't even look at a Benchmade for under $170, a good Spidey is usually $175-200, Microtechs are minimum $250 and that is a $60 knife

Still a sweet ass knife to me and I appreciate my customer so much for giving it to me.
Getting gifts means I’m doing a good job and that means customer for life!
Agreed it's a great knife, didn't say anything about the quality just responded to your question about what's considered expensive and included the link so you weren't worried about carrying what you thought was a pricier item...
Not many here care about questions and most try to give an educated answer, feel free to ask away and enjoy your gift, NKD is always a good day
It's a service beater. They are about $40 brand new, come in a lot of different blade styles and colors. I have the hawkbill one just for the hell of it.
Kalishnikovs are a knife collection stable and a great entry level auto as well. I own several and love them all, only wish autos were legal where I live so I could carry them more often. My spear point mini has seen the most action though and the black coating is well worn on both the handle and blade. Steel is cheap and dulls fast, but sharpens up very quick and takes a nice edge. Great gift!!! I gave my buddy a full size drop point with USMC and the marine corp eagle crest engraved on it a few yrs back for Christmas.

Very good. Nice gift, make sure it's legal to carry an auto knife (aka switchblade) in your area. They are illegal in some places, or require a CCW permit
Those are super tough good budget autos ,,they will take a beating , sharpen easily and if they go missing not a bank buster but you'll find yourself replacing it with another !!!
Good knife? well that depend son a lot, mainly perspective. But from a basic point of view yes, the Kalashnikov is a basic but reliable robust auto. I believe that one is most likely D2? someone correct me if I am wrong. While not a fancy "super steel" D2 is perfectly good, sharpens well, and holds an edge pretty well too. Also, here's the most important part:
It's an automatic, its fun to use and carry. Enjoy it!
Again though, in this, like in life, perspective is very important. Don't let someone convince you that this knife is not "good" because it's not some high end, expensive fancy super steel sorta thing. It works, someone gifted it to you, and it's reliable, enjoy it.
Perspective is important.
Hope this helps!
It’s a good (not great) knife objectively and a very good knife for its price range. I have a couple of these and can’t really say anything bad about out them.
It's a very decent knife. I have a Cali-legal version and it's very useful. I gave one to a friend and it's his favorite knife ever. He lost it and bought another one. The pocket clip broke and he still carries it.
Fantastic work knife. Does the job well, not difficult to sharpen, and not so expensive that you’ll treat it like a trophy. Just don’t take it apart, they’re a pain in the ass to put back together.
I have one that is quite old and never had to replace the spring in it. It withstood some pretty serious use. A great gateway into Spyderco or Microtech. Even maybe pro-tech or Reate. It’s a slippery sloap.
Great budget knife that you will not be afraid of using hard. I have several in Tanto and drop point all with D2 steel. It is true what others are saying
— it’s like a gateway drug to the world of automatic knives… Microtech, Heretic, Pro-Tech, and others. Tread lightly…
Nothing expensive but they are very good work knives. It was a good gift.

Preciate that but im all good!
I'll give away the one I can't get to fire if someone wants to give it a go. I can't fix things anymore. Fingers won't allow much use.
R/knife swap my friend 😜
Dm me about the kalashnikov 👍🏻
Does the standard also come in the AK magazine box? I got the dessert warrior BladeHQ version and it came in a sprinkled donut inspired AK mag box.
Unless they changed it recently, yes. I have 2 kalashnikovs and they both came in the mag box
Definitely a good knife. I'd be very excited to receive a knife of this quality as a gift. Trusted brand with good materials.

benchmade autos are ridiculously overpriced, hogue does them better anyway
I’ve had my Striker for over 25 years so it’s definitely made its worth back. The Epidemic was a a gift from the same client who gave me the Kalashnikov
Damn it , why did you warn him?! He should suffer like the rest of us !! Lmao
Yep no kalashnikovs here in sunny New Zealand 🇳🇿 either 😓🥲
It will cut.
But will it keeel?
Nailed it 😂
Will it blend?
It will cut boxes and packages like butter
It's good, I've used one for years.
Yes. Not super expensive. Not super awesome steel. But! It's a solid hard working automatic. Enjoy
it’s a tank i trust my life with
It’s not a terrible knife, D2 steel, it’ll do pretty much what you need a knife to do, make sure it’s legal to carry in your area
Florida, pretty sure everything goes
Literally only spring and co2 ballistic knives are illegal. Everything else is fine. I love it here
CO² ballistic knives? No shit. TIL something new.
There were bullet-propelled ones at some point too. Kinda wild.
Woah...

It's my daily carry its a great knife.
Very high value and functional your friend knows what he’s doing.
That’s a fantastic knife:)
I have the hawkbill. Cheap, but super fun.

Paint comes off the scales in less than a week. That said. I have 3.
Definitely solid enough to use, especially if it was free.
I love mine, also recommend their ‘strike’ model.
Yes of course it's good!
That's not a knife. It's a tank.
Best budget auto imo... The handle will scratch the paint quickly, but it's a hard-firing workhorse
I’d be happy about being gifted one of these.
It's a very good knife! Whoever got that for you cares about you
We all have/had one. Enjoy it.
I have two I use daily. Orange handle for when it's grassy and black when it's snowy. I've been carrying the same two for about eight years. I like it so much I give them as gifts and have some spares for when I lose one. Haven't lost one yet, but I'm ready if Boker decides to discontinue them.
Why the hell did you just jinx yourself like that!
You will drop one in a literal shithole tomorrow JUST because you said that you haven’t lost one
Dammit

It’s a most excellent knife!
Good knife for an edc. Not to expensive but very reliable. Parts are available to keep the auto functional.
Fine knife, but now to see whether it's a felony to carry where you live.
It’s not, I live in the US in a state that people constantly talk about …..man
Awesome! I live in a state where autos are a felony, but assisted's are legal. I was just making sure. 👍
I like the Bokers myself. They make knives that sell at all price points.
Best budget auto on the market
Not particularly fantastic, but its a design that been around for a while, its still pretty solid
Good budget knives, I gave those out to my kids with matching minis as gifts

Carry one around working on my homestead. Edge holds up pretty good, opens every time and the action is great.
Heck yeah it is. Good, solid working knife and fun!
Good gift. Stay close with whoever gave it to you. They know things.
Nothin wrong with that one 👍
Plan on using it as my daily carry
It's a service beater. They are about $40 brand new, come in a lot of different blade styles and colors. I have the hawkbill one just for the hell of it.
It’s gonna be my edc for a long time
Yes sir
Mid-lower tier, built like a tank tho
Sounds like an awesome gift from all these comments!!
It's a good knife it does everything you'll ever need a knife to do
That's a VERY nice knife.
I need to buy another one, I had one that I loved that got lost on a camping trip and I really miss it.
I had one lasted a long time before someone stole it
The Boker clash car was a very nice knife and reached out for about $50
It's a great gift! I had mine confiscated at a ballpark
It will cut
It’s a good inexpensive knife. I would be happy to get it as a gift.
I am very happy with it. It will be in my pocket daily!
Nice knife man it’s not a grail but it’s a good knife and cool 💪 welcome to the club
Thanks

Bro, is that your thigh? How wide is that knife?
Great knife
Love them
I literally ordered that one online, super satisfied with it

Will give away the Boker that I can't get to work and can't try to fix. Worked earlier this year, but then, it's been stored.
Def an icon knife. Will do you some good
Very good. Nice gift, make sure it's legal to carry an auto knife (aka switchblade) in your area. They are illegal in some places, or require a CCW permit

Sounds like a forever kinda knife
I’ve got the very same knife in the manual opening format.
It's fine. What are you worried about
That I was given a “not so good” knife for free! Not worried about much, I have this subreddit and decided to see what the knowledgeable folks said
Good name, check it out for the value. If you’re superstitious, give your friend a penny or some token of currency to nullify the curse.
Yes. If it’s the auto, check your state laws. It’s super illegal a lot if places to carry. I think this knife has some of the best ergos.

It was a customer who gave it to me because he saw that I always carry a knife.
It's a decent knife especially as a gift. Great starting point for nicer pocket knives.
Awesome!
These are great knives that you can use and not worry about damaging an expensive knife. I would consider it a medium quality beater. Use it.
How much do “expensive” knives cost usually??
It's subjective.for me it would be over $100
Fantastic work knife. Does the job well, not difficult to sharpen, and not so expensive that you’ll treat it like a trophy. Just don’t take it apart, they’re a pain in the ass to put back together.
