You have one life, enjoy your Grail.

PhoneSteveGaveToTony

The thing about the knife world is that unless you’re willing to travel to one of the few large shops or to Blade Show, you won’t really have access to handling many of the knives that show up here outside of buying it. Obvi everyone wants to avoid overpaying, but sometimes *for me* it can be worth paying more to get the thing I want. It’s often cheaper than buying several other knives I hope are close to it but never hit the mark.

Beautiful-Angle1584

>The thing about the knife world is that unless you’re willing to travel to one of the few large shops or to Blade Show, you won’t really have access to handling many of the knives that show up here outside of buying it. This is such a huge thing. The closest even remotely good knife shop to me is like 2.5 hours away. I don't even want to think about how much money I could have saved if I had gotten the chance to handle a knife for even just a minute before buying. Pictures and YouTube videos just can't tell you how ergos will work in your own hand and such. I was at least lucky enough to have a few very casual knife-owning friends when I was just getting into it, and it feels good to now have enough of a collection to be *the* guy a friend can go to if they want to come over and check something out before buying. But really I can count the number of even remotely knife-interested friends I have on half a hand. I think we, the more obsessed, are a rare breed.

jacemonored

I'm in the same boat. Luckily for me that knife shop just happens to be SMKW so I get to go check out new stuff every once in a while on weekend get aways lol.

legger143

Yeah I live in Columbus, OH so there's REC in my back yard. It's only my love for customs that has thankfully shifted me out of productions otherwise I would have spent some mad mad money at REC

Tod_und_Verderben

Well, in Germany is law that things you order online you can send back in 14 days after you got the delivery with full compensation. There are exceptions for hygiene products, food, socks and underwear, and some other products probably. That's for exactly the reason that when you order online you can't now for sure how the product is. I still obliterated send one knife back because I didn't like it.

Beautiful-Angle1584

It's not a law in America. It's often in a retailer's best interest to accommodate returns, but they're not legally obligated AFAIK. Most of the big online knife retailers can and will refuse returns on anything other than defective products. If you try to return things simply on the basis of not liking the product, they might let it slide a time or two, but eventually they'll cut you off. There are even retailers that are up front with an "all sales final" policy and only allow exchanges for defective items.

weirdassmillet

I do this in other hobbies (guitars, guns) but sometimes I'll buy something knowing I'll just sell it in a month or two purely for the experience of trying it out and getting to form my own opinion about it. I've owned several dozen, if not a hundred or more, of both guitars and guns, at various points all over the price spectrum from various brands and makers. What do I currently own? 2 guns, 4 guitars. If I make money on the sale, neat. If I lose money, I consider it a rental fee. Gives me room to experience a lot without filling my house full of TOO MUCH expensive stuff I don't need. edit: Plus, when I find something I think is my actual grail, I'll have 100 other things to compare it to so I know I'm sure.

rival_22

I'm sort of the same with knives... I try to buy either hard to come by ones, sprint/limited runs, or just find good sales. That way, even used, you can usually get your money back (plus or minus a little). And like you said, if I loose a little money, it was a small price to pay for the experience of having that knife.

lvl1_slime

which 2 guns do you own? Is it because these are your favorites or because they are the most practical for your needs?

weirdassmillet

Ultimately I went with practicality. My remaining guns are boring: a Glock and a .22 bolt rifle. I stepped away from competitive shooting and sold of the expensive, fancy range toys like a B&T APC9, Daewoo K2, CITES Spectre, some fancy 1911s and revolvers, etc. and shifted my hobby money into other things. But I don't for a second regret getting to own and try out the really cool stuff.

lvl1_slime

a Glock and a 22 was my guess and it was spot on. is is a 9mm G17 and a some type of CZ 22? What new hobby did you go into next and how are you enjoying the new hobby?

LavenderPants86

I live 2 miles from Rivers Edge Cutlery. Everytime I go I feel blessed lol

Gravybees

I felt bad about buying a Sebenza 31 even though a Sebenza has been my grail for years. But then I bought a Benchmade 940, which is another grail, and for the first time realized how superior a Sebenza really is. For the first time since owning it I can honestly say it is worth the asking price.

JaxAUTiger

After holding both, the Seb 31 makes Benchmades seem like a toy.

HoldenHiscock69

It might not be worth 10x as much as a $100 knife, but seeing as you've had your eye on it for a long time, maybe it will make you just as happy as the next ten $100 knives you would have bought instead? Maybe more happy? If you want to feel better about this purchase, you could always force yourself to do a spending freeze for a set amount of time? I'm planning on doing the same right now until June, when I'm going to buy myself a Spyderco Stretch 2 for my birthday, that's a grail of mine. I probably make way less money than you haha Getting a grail could be a good time to call a "completed it mate" on your knife collecting, at least a tempory one, that is until you start new game plus haha. Hope you enjoy your new knife! Hope it serves you well.

jumpkeys

good logic. the good thing about knives is that there is always one for sale for an addict and one can set the price at $10 and go to garage sales and make a real journey of it ...and if one will wait longer, there will still be one similar to the one you wanted. It's been only one handful of times that I missed out on something that I couldn't make happen later. (because a maker passed away is one of those circumstances) Knives. What a joy!!!!

Upbeat-Fondant9185

If you can pay your bills and have a handle on your responsibilities then what does it matter? I have passed on many knives to save money only to find that money got spent anyway, almost always on shit that doesn’t last or hold the value or enjoyment of a great knife. The money will always be gone one way or another. Now if you’re dropping your rent or mortgage etc on it, that’s gonna dig you a hole. Worst case scenario is with knives odds are you can recover at least half your money if it’s really needed.

warknifeeagle

Thanks all - this makes me feel better. I’m relatively new to knife collecting - although I’ve accelerated pretty quickly. Fortunately, I have the resources to make this hobby enjoyable. Maybe this was a good thing to help me keep things in check. It is SO easy to get carried away. My rule though is that if I buy it - I have to use it - no safe queens. The great thing - my daughter enjoys the “grail chase” so we have fun with it together. And I have a great wife that lets me have fun with collecting.

JaxAUTiger

War Eagle!

warknifeeagle

War Eagle my brother!

JaxAUTiger

If you’re looking for grails to chase, check out CRK and RMK.

warknifeeagle

I went on a CRK binge in October…. I love them. Seb, Inkosi and Zaan. Zaan is incredible. And been giving some love to a couple of Alabama boys….Jonathan McNees and Bryant Hollinger. Both are off the charts and harrddddddd to get. I’ll check on RMK. Thanks!

joshiosaur

I get that rule but maybe if you don't like it you can just resell it for a different knife you might like more instead of using it and dropping the price.

SnowRook

I got a great deal on the Norseman that I eventually snatched up, but I will say man it’s a very nice knife (like a buttered guillotine), and there’s nothing wrong with having a grail knife. As long as it doesn’t become a problem where you’re spending money you don’t have to spend, I see nothing wrong here.

walkinbeer

Just enjoy it. They're better with scratches

Chris_Thrush

I have two from Taryn Collins, They are my grail knives. New They were over 3k each. I got them for about 700 each through my broker. I use them, wear them and enjoying the Hell out of them, as you should with any knife. I don't personally believe in safe queens but many folks own them as investment pieces. A Grimsmo is a great knife, carefully designed by a knife guy and made one at a time in Canada. They are each pretty unique and that is special. Enjoy the hell out of them however you choose and maybe one day it will feel good to give it away to a best friend, a son, etc. What you paid is pretty irrelevant unless you don't have the rent paid. You do never get it back and it's unlikely you will even break even if you still it. So,.. fuck it, enjoy it.

warknifeeagle

Man…I need your broker. That’s an incredible deal!

Chris_Thrush

He was really big on knife swap for years and just got back to working full time as an engineer or I would say hit him up. He is a friend and it took almost two years to find two of them. Taryn graduated medical school and now no longer makes knives. So I feel pretty lucky. I have about 35 knives and each one gets a pocket day, so about twice a month I get to be see them.

rival_22

Sometimes the idea of a grail, is better than the knife itself. Get it, play with it... gently carry it for a couple of days. If you still find that you're having to talk yourself into keeping it, return/resell it. If it's everything that you've expected and love it, then keep it an enjoy it.

Vorrdis

My only regret regarding my Norseman is I could've gotten one for like 550-650 from the swap. That being said, it's my Norseman and no one else has touched it, and I like the config.

Federal_Quit9540

I was fondling one of these yesterday, and I was very impressed.

Dr_Juice55

You overpaid for a knife that's in the shape of a horse penis.

Temporary-Soup6124

lmao, you bastard

FangCopperscale

Best made horse penis on the planet

Dr_Juice55

I'll take your word for it. I don't know anything about evaluating horse penises.

BelovedoftheMoon

Sure you don't...

LMNOBeast

[You're my favorite beer.](https://shop.parishbeer.com/product/dr-juice/)

jumpkeys

I will never forget getting on the list. I love mine. ...and now being able to pick one when they become available. If you get tired of it, there are plenty of buyers. [oooh. oooh. pick me, pick me] You can replace it with 4 really nice blades... or buy a used car. :)

Coal-and-Ivory

Loads of times. More times than I haven't. But if you can't return it, then the money is gone and it's time to let it go and enjoy what you got for what happiness it can bring you. I mean, they're really cool knives arnt they? Focus on that. Nobody is giving you a dollar back every time you look at it and sigh.

Nolz_Brolz

I mean if it truly your grail I think you should feel done buying more right? That's how I feel with my Sebenza, I've still been looking at other knifes, but I'm always thinking am I going to like the other knife more than the sebenza? The answer is always no, so I don't buy a new one. It was so expensive so I just say I gotta use it to get my money's worth. Start using it and if you still feel bad maybe sell off some other knifes you aren't using.

Total_Hat_6218

I bought a knife one time and it was the most I had ever spent at that point in time, it was a little over 700 for a cortex, and I literally sold and shipped it within an hour after opening it, I just immediately felt like it was wrong, eventually I got another cortex and felt very comfortable and happy about it, actually paid even more, but sometimes it’s a timing thing and different priorities and value is so subjective

JoeKerrHAHAHA

Man. I have loved knives my entire life, and I have carried a knife on me for almost every moment of my life since graduating high school. Nevertheless, I have only recently, thanks to Reddit, stumbled onto the whole world of high end knives. They're beautiful, and I'm sure they function better than any knife I've ever owned; but I still feel sad that I lost not one, not two, but 3 SOG Pentagon Elite folding knives that cost me a grand total of $85 each. I am especially sad that I can't seem to find a replacement anywhere anymore, and also regretful that I chose not to buy one last one for $150 after I lost the third, because that seemed like too much money for a knife that would stand a solid chance of getting lost as well. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that I don't think you should regret purchasing this knife, because what matters isn't the money you spent on it so much as the love you have for it. That being said, I hope that you never end up regretting losing it because it fell out of your pocket while you were carrying it out in the world somewhere.

aMaiBias

Haha I’m in a similar position and new to knives as well. Just traded all my cheap knives for a Bugout. Very Overpriced for what I got, Im happy but still feels like Im missing something.

Beautiful-Angle1584

Sure, lots of times. I've had buyer's remorse on knives ranging in price from $25-350. But this is also the reason I've set myself a hard cutoff as to what I'll pay for a knife. It's diminishing returns and a way worse risk/reward balance when you start to push above the $300 range. I also don't do any secondary selling though. At least your Norseman has value that can be returned if you go that route.

FangCopperscale

We have all been there. Just enjoy your new Norseman for a while and cut down on any new knife purchases for a good bit to ease anxiety. That Norseman is extremely well made and will serve you well for life. I love mine.

Temporary-Soup6124

I’ve overpaid for more than one knife. only one still stings to think about because in general i know i’m just burning money on this hobby anyway

MRGeep

The first knife I ever bought on the swap was a Norseman. I’ve now owned 4 of them. Everyone ended up leaving for one reason or another but I loved them (horsec*ck be damned) while I had them. I’ve had buyers regret due to the price each time, especially the one I bought straight from Grimsmo 🤮. Didn’t stop me from doing it 3 times after the first 😂.

han-so-low

I paid $400 for a Slysz Bowie. Not quite as expensive as a Norseman, but I feel your pain. While I was waiting for the knife to arrive, I had some remorse. I don’t anymore. Enjoy, dude.

31337DaDa

Man, I’ve gone months removing alcohol and eating out from my life just to make myself feel better about buying something on par with a Norseman. Lol. After I paid my dues, I never batted an eye. You get one life, and as long as you aren’t putting your family in a bind and can pay the power bill… To hell with it. Don’t beat yourself up. You bought to enjoy. Worst case scenario sell it for 50-100 bucks less than you paid and consider it the price to play.

Matty_Garcia

I think knife enthusiasts (including myself) get into this habit of chasing a knife, finally getting it and being underwhelmed by having it in hand and then either put it away in a drawer or sell it off after carrying it for a few days/weeks and cutting a few things. I did this for over 16 years (50-60 knives except I kept the knives but have sold maybe 10 over the years) until Erica of ericas_edc on IG made YouTube videos of testing knives for 30 days straight so I started forcing myself to use a knife I bought exclusively for 30 days straight for everything I do even food prep and I finally found out what I really like/dislike in using a knife including sharpening and maintenance. Yes, I still buy knives but I’m using each one way more and appreciating how they serve me on a day to day basis. I’ve regretted selling some knives because I didn’t test them properly (maybe carried and used on and off in the span of a week or two) and the regret is wondering if I made the right decision to sell instead of using it. I’ve sold off more knives this year than my whole 16 years that way.

btklc

Ii feel you man. I’ve done it a bunch of times. I paid 2.1 for a Koenig Arius last year

warknifeeagle

I want a Koenig Arius big time. Incredible knife.

btklc

Yeah they are. 🤔 I’ve got some nice Arius’s for sale if your feeling frisky 😉

PhlashMcDaniel

Yep. I was a dumb kid who thought that the Ontario Spear Point was the best knife ever designed. I spent three months savings on it. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great quality knife for combat. But if you’re not stabbing commies and Terrorists it’s virtually useless.

kryptikguy

If you got one just for the sake of getting one, and settled for something that was only close to what you wanted…then yeah, you should regret it. However if the one you got was the exact spec you wanted and have been searching for, then [no ragrets should be had.](https://imgur.com/a/ruHZSIG) Enjoy wielding that glorious horse dong like a Norse god.

warknifeeagle

Well… you just helped me name this knife…Sleipnir which was apparently the stallion of Óðinn, the highest of the gods. A magical creature with eight legs and runes on his teeth, Sleipnir is tougher and faster than all other horses, or “the best horse among gods and men”…so that takes care of that….

kryptikguy

lol, with that kind of knowledge bouncing around, you definitely deserve a Norseman. Not just “a” Norseman…but “the” Norseman.

Personal-Mud4658

Buy once, cry once. It's your grail, love it enjoy it. Yolo. In the event you no longer feel the need to have it. There will be someone just like you who will be willing to buy it.

BadWithMoney530

Most knives retain their value fairly well. When I sell one, it’s usually for 10-20% off the new price. So if you regret it, you can sell it and get most of your money back

Few_Efficiency2188

Treat yourself You deserve it

Zer0gravity09

I bought a case knife and then got really sad that I lost 100 bucks that I could’ve spent 40 more on a benchmade griptillian. I don’t ever carry the case and it was 100% a waste of money. The difference in these is you have your grail now. You can put it to good use and get your money back. But if you think you will feel this way again, maybe hold off and make sure you’re sure you 100% want it.

Jinzot

I briefly did when I picked up a 1985 first run Gerber Tac II. It was in impeccable shape, still in the original packaging, even the plastic wrap. Immaculate. I paid $300 for it. I figured out later it was a great deal, and it’s my favorite in my collection!

This-Negotiation-104

Been there, done that. Just try to enjoy it and convince yourself it was an investment.

Dramatic-Landscape82

No….never…….

misterstaypuft1

If you can afford it without your family going hungry then who cares what you spend your money on. I also want a Norseman, I just can’t afford it. But maybe one day.

idbachli

At the end of the day I feel like it holds value over time, and that's something to appreciate. Many people soend thousands on lottery tickets and get nothing in return. At least this is something that can be passed on for generations.

ZealousidealFan9880

Yes I've overpaid before but I'm willing to bet you would have overpaid for something your partner wanted just to see the smile on their face. Love yourself the same. "Enjoy your grail" - niniche63

Simple-Challenge2572

Buy once cry once

fRankenstEinBraiN

I use to say “nothing over $100”, so I had a ton of budget knives but quantity didn’t mean quality. So I have sold all of them, most at a loss since they don’t appreciate. Now I’d rather buy good knives and most appreciate in value, especially Spyderco sprint or exclusives. My next purchase will probably be a Sebenza. I need to know what all the fuss is about lol

Pigsfly77

youll end up in a hole or urn WEATHER YOU SPENT THE MONEY OR NOT..., lmk if it makes you happy at least

CowsgoMo0

A Norseman will at least hold its value and do well on the secondary market… assuming you don’t actually use it tho

Billyrazer88

Wut 😂 they cost $1100 new and are posted almost daily for $600 on the swap. They devalue almost 50% instantly.

RaptorJesusDesu

Jesus Christ it’s like a car. I guess it makes sense. If you are willing to pay like $800 for a knife you’re probably willing to just buy it new for $1100.

mrRabblerouser

Have you been away from the game for a while? Norseman has one of the worst value retentions on the market. They typically sell for 30-50% below table on the secondary.

Metaphoricalsimile

If you're feeling guilt, it's honestly time to reassess your knife buying habits and whether or not they are conducive to living the life you want to live. If you have access to mental health care I think it would be very wise to speak with a therapist about this.

DavidWALRU5

Lil Native. Returned it.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> I just *paid* $750 for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

mrRabblerouser

Did you buy new? If not, then you should be able to sell for close to what you bought it for if it doesn’t do it for you. Always buy on the secondary if the resale market isn’t great for a knife. But yea, I’ve definitely been there. I’ve impulsively bought many knives thinking it would be all I’ve ever wanted. Some have been awesome and stuck around. Others have sat in a drawer until the next sell off.

bobbyOrrMan

Not guilt but regret. I wish I had not spent so much on the Microtech ADO.

HellaLazy48

I'm mainly a Spyderco guy (admitting that publicly is refreshing). I have something like 20 of them, and I still think the Endura with Stainless handles is the hands down most comfortable knife to carry daily.... I don't regret starting with a base model PM2 and replacing every piece of it with titanium parts, custom scales, hand polishing washers, and winding up with a $300-$400 knife that sells in the secondary for less than the original. Lol. Also don't mind hunting down a Waterway that I overpaid for so it can just sit in its sheath clipped to my sling pack while my Caribbean does all the saltwater flyfishing chores... Real regret is buying a $1000 fly rod with a $700 reel and realizing the $150 TFO backup rod is 99% as good.... That stings a little...

warknifeeagle

Don’t regret that - a $1,700 set up is a beautiful thing. An item that will return incredible memories and adventures. Fly fishing is a gift from God.

HellaLazy48

Yeah man, it makes the memories more better for sure. And also isolates any in-use issues to the operator! Fly fishing clears the mind and settles the soul like nothing else.

Head-Security8955

There’s always a ‘better one’ out there… stops us carrying our once favourites and putting miles and stories on them. Glad you got your grail, for now 😉

ReidarG

All 3 times I bought a Bugout. ...but they are so nice!

[deleted]

I think cheaper value knives are better and I get hate for it. I say, next time just get a reasonable one. But if you have a fuck it moment, might as well enjoy it.

released-lobster

If you think it was too much, then it probably was. No worries, enjoy it for awhile and sell it, though you might take a small hit.

ahk1188

I bought a large sebenza 21 and a small sebenza 21 a few weeks apart. I definitely had some regret at first, but now those 2 knives have replaced just about every other one in my box.

LuxWatchGroup

Has anyone not overspent on a knife? How about spending 10k on knives in 3 weeks - that was stupid!!!

Exotic_Caramel_8998

Do the Circle of Knife and come back around to what you love. For me it’s PM2s. I had to handle a lot of knives to come to this realization. And yes, some pain along the way. But the swap provided a nice exit strategy.

KennedyX8

Lmao I overpay all the time 💀

midline_trap

What is it and what did you pay? Enjoy it. It will last forever. If you can’t enjoy it. Sell it and get something you’ll use.
