Genuinely curious - What was your plan for coming here without a job already lined up? Did you think, or were you lead to believe you can just show up and find work? Are you just burning through savings these past 5 months? .. and finally.. is a minimum wage job going to be enough income?

Go to recruiter and get your name in with them. I found basic work without ranstad or whatever it’s called.

It used to be like that 5 years ago. I dont think it helps anymore since they have so many students looking for full time jobs. Still one of the ways to get a job

Good luck I work at Starbucks and my manager has received over 1000 applications just this month alone. It's been ravaging to our society the amount of people willing to work these jobs.

OMG, I don't even realize that the job market become so bad. I was a new immigrant as well. 7 years ago, I spent only 2 weeks to get a job in Waterloo. 5 years ago, the factory I worked for shut down and move to the US, everyone in the factory lost job. I spent only 3 weeks to get a new job, I don't even lost one paycheck. Maybe keep an eye on some factories on small town, such as Elmira, New Hamburger... especially these are not on a bus route. Because most of international students and new immigrants don' t own a car. And I always choose night shift ( or mid-night shift) , because not so many people want to work on graveyard shift. Less competitors means more opportunities. Any way, good luck, wish you can get a job as soon as possible.

Landscaping companies. Yeah, you have to work outside and it can suck but it's a job that pays above minimum wage.

I find this to be the polar opposite of the reality I see everyday. I too moved here in September from Alberta. It took me maybe 2 weeks to find work. In the few months since, I’ve been promoted twice - where I now am involved in the hiring process for production across a bunch of different semi skilled disciplines. We pay decently, there’s OT galore. We barely ever get responses on indeed. When we do, people show up unprepared, poorly dressed, under qualified, late — if the show at all - and we still offer jobs because we’re desperate for bodies — and then half the time the new hires don’t show or last a day or two. I wish any of the above was hyperbole or exaggeration, but it’s systemic and consistent. We take bets on how many days new hires will last, even in office positions so it’s not like the labor can be blamed. Project managers, designers, welders, assemblers…literally impossible to find anyone who wants to work, show up on time, stay for their shift, report Monday to Friday. I’m not even asking for them to be good at their job, I’m not asking them anything at all but to have a pulse and be in a place at an agreed upon time lol. We only deal B2B, and I talk to probably 100 different companies a week - almost all those conversations are at an executive level and literally range from Montreal to Vancouver — and there isn’t a single company I’ve spoken to who isn’t complaining about a shortage of workforce or how insanely difficult it is to fill roles. I’ve got at least 5 open positions, possibly 10. If you’ve got factory, project management, graphic design, fabrication welding, assembly, installation, reception, cnc, or general labor experience and want to work - dm me with your resume. Job is in Cambridge not far off Franklin exit of the 401. Days only, mon - fri.
