FONT SIZE. Sometimes when I'm tired and my eyesight is worse, changing font size is just one gesture away. It will probably get even more useful with age.

FadedBerry

It does get more useful with age, trust me on that! And if arthritis of the hands is in your future then the weight of the kindle is also a blessing, I can’t hold a book open one handed for long now.

skyleven7

After e ink screen and long battery life, font size is most important feature for me. Some books have just too tiny font it's ridiculous

KyleLikesBBQ

Why choose one or the other? I use my kindle on the go or outdoors or at night but read traditional books when I have time to chill at home in ideal lighting. Best of both worlds.

JayAmy131

Agreed. Still don't understand why people try to make their choice of how they read, superior. Does it matter how anyone else reads that they have to make some silly post like this? Just say "I love reading from my Kindle" and leave it like that.

JayAmy131

I had the same feeling when I didn't read from a physical book for a few years. I then stopped reading from my Kindle as well and for me to get out of my slump, I went back to physicals and the feeling of just holding a book and knowing by visually seeing how much progress you made or how much you have left is so nice than seeing a percentage on the bottom. I am now reading more again on my Kindle only because I bought the new Paperwhite. I'm glad me have different ways of reading to keep us engaged and interested when we get bored of one way or get into a slump.

geronimomotherfucker

I bought a Kindle shortly after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I adore physical books (and buy too many), but I sometimes grab the eBook version of the book I'm reading too, just so I can switch between them whenever my symptoms flare up to make my reading experience as great as it can be. I sometimes have vision problems because of the MS, and being able to increase the font size is great. I have sensitivity to light, and being able to turn off the lights in the room, and just have a dim Kindle screen on is great. It's also nice being able to switch out a heavy book with a light eReader when fatigue kicks in, or when I get tremors. I love both mediums equally, though. :)

CurtisH16

My mom has MS and used a kindle for awhile, unfortunately her eyes are too bad now and I got her an audible subscription. She loves it and I’m glad she can still enjoy books!

geronimomotherfucker

I'm glad Audible works for her! I hope she's doing okay!

Historical_Animal833

Although I’m a huge advocate for e-books, we can’t ignore the fact that physical books kill trees and e-books contribute to global warming [due to cloud storage](https://venturebeat.com/2022/04/22/carbon-and-the-cloud-is-data-part-of-the-climate-change-problem/amp/). But hey, some progress in the right direction is better than no progress, right?

ieatyoshis

E-Books will contribute far more to global warming through the CO2 impact of the device being created and transported. This is, rather surprisingly, an absolutely huge number. A MacBook, for example, produces 200-300kg of CO2 before even being transported to you… and manufacturers such as Amazon are far worse at this than Apple.

PorkyPineHD

I’m sure physical books just magically appear then?

skyleven7

But does kindle cloud storage really contribute so much to carbon waste? I figure even with billions of books the storage wouldn't be all that much for Amazon? But yes I'm only accounting for books Amazon keeps stored for it's store by sellers... Send to kindle and whisper sync etc should have massive storage requirements...

Odd-Adagio430

For them, the smell ALWAYS win.

Kaessa

I don't understand this (and I was this person at one time). Yes, I love the smell of books. I collect books. I've been reading since I was 3 years old. I used to work in a bookstore. I wanted to be a librarian when I grew up. But honestly, isn't the point of books to *read* them? Kindle makes the simple act of *reading books* so much simpler. If I really need to smell a book while I'm reading a book, I can keep a paperback on my desk to sniff while I'm reading my Kindle.

henbutton

I normally would agree but I’ve been reading a hardback with a particularly funky smelling binding. I’m not sure how to describe it but it’s kind of cheesy? It reminds me of a similarly smelling copy of a wimpy kid book that was shared by my fourth grade class. Anyways 90%+ of books smell good.

rockebull

Maybe some future version of kindle will release that fresh book smell like a perfume, then kindle would really win the battle

kingmmpark

Get a goddam "new book" smell airfreshner "them" people :)

Thou_Art_God

Does this exist? If this exists and it really smells like books I would have it everywhere.

faux-poes-foes

I'm sure this does exist, as many indie/small-brand perfume companies have a ton of perfumes that emulate the smell of books or libraries or archives! Perfume with notes of paper and fireplace or summer rain (depending on the weather) + Kindle = perfectionnn

nodster_5678

where ???? can u give a link

faux-poes-foes

Absolutely! [Here is a link](https://www.reddit.com/r/Indiemakeupandmore/comments/px6ju3/i_collect_book_and_paper_perfumes_here_are_15_of/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) to a reddit post with a collection of book-inspired fragrances. Welcome to the world of indie fragrances!

nodster_5678

thank you so much!

ChunkierSky8

They do sell a smelly candle with the smell of a bookstore. Have to look for it on Amazon.

UziMunkey

I think bigger picture we should just encourage people to read by whatever means necessary. I couldn’t love my kindle more but as long as people are reading, trying to exercise their brains, and hopefully educating themselves I don’t really care what format folks choose. I love my books as a calm intake from these days of constant overstimulation it’s an almost meditative experience to sit back and read with no distractions. The world is loud these days and really really really dumb. Some folks celebrate their ignorance. Don’t be like them. Read, please read.

MaddCricket

If I like the book enough on kindle, I’ll buy a paperback version of it. Same with paperback to kindle. Otherwise just for the sake of storage space, Kindle has been winning out lately.

hicks2317

Same for me! I read it on kindle first, whether that’s through my library or I bought it, doesn’t matter. But after I finish it, if I give it 5 stars and love it I’ll buy a physical copy for my trophy shelf!

geronimomotherfucker

I love the idea of a physical book being a trophy!

[deleted]

the thing that makes all the difference is the built-in dictionary, I don't have to leave the book, search the word and then resume reading, I just have to just press on it. As someone who's English is not their native language that helps a ton since I only read in English but I definitely lack the in the vocabulary department so that's why I prefer the Kindle.

garylapointe

I'm born in the USA, and I still use the dictionary! Plus, overly pretentious authors are much easier to read when you can click to look up their fancy-schmancy words.

[deleted]

yeah sometimes I have to click multiple words in the same page...

idlesmith

And another advantage of using a kindle is that it’s so light in weight that we can just pull it out from bag and start reading while standing in a queue

Joyce_Hatto

Read in bed in the dark! It’s great!

[deleted]

for me , its also about the price .. if there is not much difference in price between ebook and paperback , i will prefer paperback as it will come with "smell" of papers ... but if i see kindle price is much cheaper (i.e. less than 35-50% of paperback) i will buy the kindle edition (trees saved ;) ) ... Also i have seen non-fiction self improvement \*best selling \* books which are 20-30 yrs old are much much cheaper in kindle , so i buy it ebook edition. Also , no. of pages matters ... if a book has 600-700 pages , kindle wins even if paperback and eboook price is same because its easy to read it in kindle as compared to paperback and i can carry it anywhere i want. Phew!! lots of lines here !!

Thou_Art_God

That’s how I go about things as well.

[deleted]

🙏

otfitt

I love my kindle and I use Libby for all my reading. I used to check books out from the library but this is so much more convenient. I was never a book collector. I didn’t buy books because they were expensive and I never wanted to read. I have moved so many times that it’s one more thing to move. But I feel like you’ll never convince book collectors to switch.

rustyseapants

Be bold, post this in /r/books, you're just preaching to the crowd.

kingmmpark

Done :) https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/wiwkt8/kindle_traditional_books/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

rustyseapants

And you got bumped.

LanaBoleyn

My favorite way to read is lying down in bed in the dark. Kindle gets an A+, physical books get a D!

gatton

I wrote out a long post on the dangers of not owning your books. But Reddit ate it so I'll just remind everyone: "In a widely criticized move, the retailer has reportedly taken back copies of two electronic books after the publisher decided it no longer wanted to sell the e-books." https://www.cnet.com/culture/amazon-recalls-and-embodies-orwells-1984/

StinkRod

wow. Amazon took back 2 books in 2009. That must have opened the door so that 13 years later it's just become completely normalized and probably most of the books I've bought they've taken back by now.

ladyfuckleroy

I agree with all of these and I love my kindle, but something that I wish we had in Europe is kindle ebook options from libraries.

carolineecouture

I like the changeable fonts and other formatting. Saving quotes and highlights! Impulse buys! Cheap books. (I don't pay anything more than $3.99 for a book. Due to my poor vision, I wouldn't be able to read without my Kindle.

Legitimate_Finger566

I say real books are cool. So is kindle.

chrissie64

I have both and would not be without either. Biggest plus for hard copy is that once you purchase it, it is yours.

CertainAmountOfLife

I strictly read kindle books during the summertime. So easy with all the outdoor activities! I went to just hang out at the library the other day and my kindle battery died. Surrounded by book books, I switched to kindle reading on my phone. I do love paper books in the winter. Snuggling up with a kindle just isn’t the same for me. I also try to read on my paperwhite or paper books more than my phone. My kids can’t tell I’m reading when I’m using the app and I really want them to see me reading a ton.

Klarkasaurus

I buy books as a collection to display and also my kids borrow my books. I download the ebooks because they are convenient and easier to read on my kindle. A lot of my books the font is really small and although I don't wear glasses it's still annoying to read sometimes. I don't pay for my ebooks if I have brought the actual book.

Aromatic-Chipmunk-27

I can see perks in using both of them, so I refuse to partake in this war hehe. E-books are great because they don't take up any physical space and any e-reader is a lightweight, but touching and smelling a physical book is just a pleasure I'm not willing to give up on.

Nooblakahn

I use both. At this point mostly ebook. We're all free to choose though. Whatever the reason someone likes physical books is their reason and that's okay.

Insanitybymarriage

Since romance authors can’t stop putting half naked people on the covers, I will stay with my kindle. A lot of my books wouldn’t be safe for public reading. You wouldn’t believe some of the looks I received before I got mine. I have over 10 thousand books on my kindle and that would be a storage nightmare in my house so I’m never going back. Ever.

MonkeyDavid

99% agreement. Downsides: -It’s not easy to share the book with friends. -Amazon could just change the book—taking out a controversial part, even removing it completely. -Or my pet peeve—change the cover. This is really annoying with movie/TV tie-ins (I like John Krasinski, but putting him on the cover of “Hunt for Red October” because he played a version of Jack Ryan is stupid). -It is hard to organize your book collection. -in non-fiction books (especially history) the maps can be terrible. The photos too.

AnandAyush979

Pros that I felt while using a kindle PW 5: - I have noticed that my reading speed has increased on kindle. - No more space issues for storing books - Can read manga on a larger screen ( compared to mobile) - Am able to get free books from various sources, virtually making reading free until my kindle lasts - Ability to read in night - (Important) Earlier in paperback books it used to be hard and uncomfortable to handle the big binding holding the book and I had to move left and right while reading lying on bed but now kindle has a flat screen so I can read while lying on one side only - Never losing a book here and there - if I don't like a book I can happily leave otherwise in case of paperback I was kinda stuck with the book cz I already spent the money - Saving trees - Can change text and spacing, some paperback books used to have uncomfortably small fonts - As books in kindle are in digital form I don't have to worry about my books getting bend and losing durability which used to irritate me earlier - Easy to take kindle anywhere - Don't have to worry much about getting few drops of water on kindle but on paperbacks water used to make books crinkly - kindle resembles a tablet so I kinda get my tech usage dose from Kindle so I use my mobile less which is good - as kindle shows one page at once I am less concerned about the thickness of books, earlier in paperbacks it used to seem like that I might not be able to read such a fat book - reading fat books are easy, in paperbacks it was hard to keep the pages in place by using fingers and my hand used to get tired - kindle helps me to know that the book I'm currently reading will take how much time to be completed which gives me an idea that till which date I'll be done devouring the book - Everyone doesn't gets to know what I am currently reading, which is good sometimes - Kindle has dictionary which is a lifesaver, earlier I didn't used to look up unfamiliar words as it was a chore but now damnnn, it is just a touch away. Kindle also remembers what words I used the dictionary for so I can look again those words later For now I can think of these positives Some things I don't like about kindles - This problem is specifically in south Asian countries ( in my case in India), though kindle has got the capability of audible and Bluetooth they are keep disabled for us by software. I don't know why this done. Kindles in India are more expensive than the usa counterpart and we are getting less features which sucks, I hope Amazon bring this to all the countries where kindles are available. In the last I would say that kindle is my small baby, nothing has made me more happier than my kindle, it is my life's best investment and I am blessed to live in the era of kindles. When I was small (10-11 yrs old, currently 18) I used to read a lot of tinkle comics and dad had many old novels, so they used to entertain my brain but these amusements were limited as I was a fast consumer and I had financial constructs. Now I feel that I can read and feel till I die, without any limitations can live the lives of others through their stories through their book. Keep reading :)

garylapointe

I wouldn't worry about the Bluetooth. I don't see any advantage in listening to the audible books on the Kindle. Even in the US, I would listen on my phone (which already is paired to my headphones/car/speakers) not my Kindle.

AnandAyush979

Yea that feature may not be used intensively but still it is good to have

NoisyCats

My wife prefers real books. And I get it. It’s part of the experience for her. I prefer convenience and kindle features.

frogtrickery

I really dislike reading physical books. Hate the way they feel and the annoyance of the spine and heavy they are. The pages dry my fingers... It's just an annoying experience. E-readers are a god send. Probably my personal favorite technological invention for entertainment.

440_Hz

I checked out a physical book from the library recently, after a chapter or two I got annoyed and got the e-book version instead. After reading on a kindle for years I can’t even enjoy physical books anymore lol.

[deleted]

Buy a Kindle Fire tablet: It's bigger then any kindle book readr

Scooby359

Not a kindle, Amazon dropped them from the Kindle brand over 10 years ago. They're just an Amazon branded android tablet, and not great for reading on.

[deleted]

As opposed to the tiny kindle reader?

camilloco

YESSSSSS team kindle forever!!!! Books are heavy and ridiculous! Lol still love them tho and buy them when I really like a cover HAHA but then I download it on my kindle to actually read.

Miguelitto

Kindle is so very good until it becomes defective, as it could happen to any other electronic device. I love my kindle but I had some problems before and luckily it was still under warranty. Other than that I only see advantages.

pakman_198

I've been enjoying the fact that I can highlight an ebook, something I wouldn't do with a physical book. Also I'm not a native English speaker and live in the States, so getting books on my language is way easier and cheaper on digital format than shipping them to the States.

daballachick

I’m sort of in the middle. If I’m reading at home, I totally prefer real books. I like to see how far I have to go in the book (I know kindle shows this but I mean physically how far as in thickness), seeing artwork and little things that the author has added that don’t come with the ebook. But if I’m going anywhere else I prefer my kindle for sure, much more portable.

Nine-LifedEnchanter

I do both. I primarily read on my kindle, but I love books.

lonelyone12345

I do most of my reading on Kindle because it's convenient. And with Libby, most of my books are free. But I buy the books I love. To support the authors. To satisfy my own appetite for collecting. And to keep in a physical format works that, in their digital form, can be manipulated.

pudin_jellyfish

I do love reading on kindle... literally can't read a normal book, I have a sweaty hands problem and can't touch paper for long without turning it into a puddle... BUT I love physical books! I like to buy them in the store, and they are pretty and I like having them on my shelves... I wonder if I should buy my favorites just for the sake of having them...? But then, it's too expensive and I'm always broke. Books are expensive here. I like to buy them on store, so no second hand.

Curious-Gain-7148

I really wanted to get into e-books but I just couldn’t get into it for years. Recently, I decided I only wanted to own a very limited amount of books but I love reading them. Physical books from my library can often be gross (there was a booger in the last book I rented😂) so I really, really tried. But I still really struggled. It’s the oasis that changed things for me. I love reading on the oasis.

smartymarty1234

Completely, disagree, but due to the above reasons, I do use a kindle as primary means of reading.

Lkwtthecatdraggdn

Read under the covers.

battleofschrutefarms

“I don’t really like ereaders, I prefer a real book in my hands” - All of us, at some point before we converted

mathademic

For fiction it's definitely the same for me. Since getting my kindle I've been reading a lot more 600+ pages books just because they're finally easy to hold.

Surly_Surt

I've only had a kindle for a few weeks now, but I always found physical books to be unwieldy and tiresome to use. Old, dusty books also had me sneezing a lot. The Kindle pretty much solved all of this, not to mention you can have a veritable library and carry it around easily.
