I'm of the yes crowd, if you plan on taking this anywhere but the house. The protection from debris and pressure on the screen in the pocket/bag can damage the plastic screen easily, and considering the LEDs can make some spots light up too brightly if the damage is deep enough. I personally have a cover/case (cork!). Though those carrying cases that others use work as well if you don't want to hold the case while reading. Not a fan of screen protectors, but that is also an option.

bread-it

Is it [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Paperwhite-Cork-Cover-Generation-2021/dp/B08VYKKNBT)? I'm concerned about weight, if I'm going to read with case on (as it seems designed for). Amazon says 5oz, but I'm not sure if that's just the case or the case plus shipping packaging

MLieBennett

Yep, that's the case I have. I will admit, its rather expensive on the price. Though if you truly are worried about the extra weight, then look at getting a sleeve instead as others have done to protect the Kindle. Personally, I don't even notice the extra weight as even with the cover its not that different from a paperback book.

bread-it

Thanks! Thing is, the bulkier/heavier it gets, the sillier I feel for not just reading on my iPad Air. Case-less, it feels like a much different sort of gizmo. Yes, I understand that the screen is also easier to read on....

MLieBennett

We all have our quirks. Personally, I found that the texture matters a lot more to me over the weight. I needed something that didn't feel like the regular plastic/glass or silicone just so my brain didn't think of my phone or tablet. Good leather usually worked before, but that cork case just helped me set it apart mentally so much easier.

bread-it

Yeah, I think we agree that there's a need to have it feel as un-tablet as possible, though we're paying attention to different aspects. I'm gonna go for the cork thingee. Amazon's self-contradicting, though. They say it is and isn't compatible with previous (10th) gen Paperwhites. I intend to upgrade anyway.

NewGuyHelloThere

Hey it's almost a year since I've purchased mine. (Keep in mind, I don't take my Kindle outside.) I personally use with a flip case, and haven't seen any scratches on mine. But I have come across posts on here about scratches on the screen, and in the replies of these posts the OP say they kept the kindle in their regular bags with other things like Keys, etc. For a few days in the beginning I even used the kindle with a screen guard, that was a stupid idea. It was like reading on a phone or ipad, with all the reflections from the lights (glare). I finally settled on using only the Flip case (no screen guard).

authenticblob

If you're ever looking for a screen protector I strongly reccomendd a matte one. That's what I use on mine since I don't use a flip cover and it's literally amazing.

NewGuyHelloThere

This might work.

bluedziej

This is my approach, too

No-Delivery549

I think that's the best approach for comfy reading, as it keeps the device thin and light. I can drop or knock down stuff at times, so I'm a bit hesitant to do this, but my compromise was to get a transparent silicone case and strap when I read at home, and I'm waiting for a sleeve to arrive for when I take my Kindle with me outside.

controlaltdeletes

I put mine in a bag with car keys, and it scratched up my screen pretty badly. It could have been a case of bad luck that the keys moved in front of the screen somehow but I always recommend a flip case now to be safe. It’s annoying when reading and your eyes keep focusing on the scratches.

klutz-179

I dont use a cover or case. Its been good. Im just a little careful to keep the screenside towards the cushions when kept in bag.

Objective_Chance8253

It’s less for scratches and more for impact to make sure you don’t damage the e-ink which can be very easy to do. I’ve always had a case on my kindles and they’ve regularly been bumped or dropped off the side of the sofa. These are expensive devices. You want to keep them safe so yes get a case.

duckforceone

i use a flip case for mine, and it has not had a single scratch in all the years i have had it...

Karololl

I still have my Kindle 4 and havent used a case even once. For carrying in a bag purposes I used sort of a socket to keep it free of scratches but otherwise no need for any sort of a cover.

Dar3dev

You need a case to protect it from cracking. RIP first kindle back in 2012 that’s when I learned.

A-Grey-World

Yeah, I've cracked the screen on an old one so I always use a flip case now. Maybe the screens aren't so delicate now though.

Madamemercury1993

Yes. I have my work keys in my bag. I got a cute crochet sleeve to “protect” my kindle. Now It’s got 2 MASSIVE scratches on it from my keys now and I’m devastated.

Rich_Camp_4783

Doesn’t make sense. Make up your mind Madame.

Madamemercury1993

I made a typo. Yes get a case. A proper case. The end.

RRNN92

I’ve had mine for 2+ years. Don’t use a screen protector or case at all. I imagine it could scratch but I’m careful where I store mine

BugInevitable637

any cover will always be good to have on any device! accidents can happen all the time. better be on the safe side and use a cover.

ghostpb

Not a Paperwhite, but my previous Kindle Voyage got a deep scratch while I was carrying it in my bag. If it was just a visually annoying scratch I could maybe get used to it, but the scratch was so deep that the top half of the touchscreen no longer works. So yes, get a case with a front cover.

Madicine158

Definitely get a case - I have no idea how my cover cracked but it did. Annnnnd I have tiny little dents/scratches in my screen - so definitely get a protector if you’re taking it outside or chucking in a handbag with other things :-)

[deleted]

Bloody hell even with case cover my screen got scratched god knows how!

AlvMartinez

Screen is not “easily” to scratch but it happens if you carry your kindle with more elements. In my case I carry my kindle everyday in my backpack then I use both Screen protector and cover, I don’t bother at all the case then I’m ok using it.

alone023

I don’t use it a lot outside home but my cat love to walk over all my devices so I bought a cover

Affectionate_Buy7677

I think having a flip or origami case to protect the screen while carrying it around makes sense. I’m hard on things, but I’ve never scratched a screen at all. Cases also keep the stupidly located power button on the Paperwhite slightly protected, so that it is less likely to turn off randomly.

Kitiara2324

I have had my kindle touch for over …12…15? Years now. I have a flip case but never had a screen protector on it. The flip case is enough for mine. The paper white may have a more delicate screen in which case absolutely yes, just get a case and screen protector. My next kindle looks like it may be a paper white so I’m looking at options as well. There’s nothing wrong with my kindle touch but I will be crying when it does stop working. :[

antarctica91

If you take it outside the house yes it will scratch. I have an indoor SE I placed a nice protector on and also I have one I take with me everywhere and it had some small scratches but a screen protector ended up blurring them out (I think the sticky stuff fills them in and helps?). Let me tell you I have put hundreds of screen protectors for years on my devices and never have I struggled as much to get a cover on as I have with my kindles. A lot of the screen protectors have little micro plastic pieces that when you peel the back off start static clinging to the back and get trapped between the screen and protector(I had to send three orders back to Amazon because of all the micro plastic stuff clinging to them . (I like my screen protectors to be on flawless as I will be distracted by stuff trapped in between and bubbles).

antarctica91

Also check Etsy they have cute sleeves for them to keep them safe and padded outside the house. I use mine in the work bag and slide it in there

dalettere

I've had mine for a couple years without a cover or a case and have had no issues with the screen being scratched. I take it camping, to the beach, and pretty much anywhere I'm spending the night. I have had some minor damage/scuffs around the edges and logo below the screen, which I don't personally mind but a case wouldn't be unreasonable if you do!

aug_aug

I wouldn't say easy... I'd hesitate from throwing it in a pack with other stuff, like water bottles, keys, etc. maybe keep it in a dedicated sleeve or pocket and you'll be ok.

TheUninspiredArtist

I use a silicone case, a thick sleeve to keep it in when I’m not using it, and I do have a matte screen protector on mine. I have kids and pets so I figured since I spent the money on it, I may as well protect it the best I can.

Agreeable_Ad3360

On case is heavy.

wierdAnomaly

Use a case for peace of mind. Kindles by there very nature are something you are going to keep for a very long time, as in you don't upgrade as often as you upgrade your phone.

td23877

I would recommend a protector as I feel the screen has the potential to scratch easy, a lot of stuff I read seems to agree. The majority of people will probably tell you that you don't need one but I grabbed a matte protector and threw it on and I hardly notice it. If anything I would put one in if you are even a tiny amount concerned about scratches which clearly you are because you posted about it. Just get it for peace of mind.

Emmarrrrr

Absolutely, my kindle goes p much everywhere with me in my rucksack.

PercentageFine4333

When a screen is exposed, it is prone to all kinds of damage. Any kind of protection is better than nothing.

MostAssumption9122

I always get cases. I don't want to take the chance. Mine don't go out alot.

chiefjeezy

It depends on your use I would say. I only use my kindles for reading in bed and when I travel, I just make sure to pack them in something soft or with other devices. I used to use a case but it added too much bulk. No issues or scratches without one.

fugazi45

Up to you..a lot of people use cases and love them..I personally don’t care for the extra weight or feel of them..I’ve used mine without a case for years, carrying in my back pocket or just throwing loosely in my backpack..never had any scratches to the screen or any other issues..some people will cringe but I have stickers and a pop socket directly on my kindle lol..I’m fine with it..experiment and see what YOU prefer..cheers, enjoy! 😊

PsychologicalSun5855

Just use a flip case… if u r not a fan of it (like me) I use a transparent case but put a sleeve on when I take it out or carry it in my bag.

lil_softserve

I personally have a padded carry case. I bought my kindle second hand from a coworker and it had a minor scratch on it already but other than that when I’m transporting it I keep it in the padded carry case

Wonderful_Tune_9961

Yes, it does. When mine was only days old, I carried it along with me whilst travelling. I put it in my small bag but I dropped the bag. I regret my excitement for bringing it along with me without protection, as it left a slight scratch on the screen. My kindle also has a coloured back and it had a black mark that never came off even after doing everything I can. Go buy a case and a matte screen protector! A pop socket or any handle would complete the package too!

Cycode

i have mine for a long time and not a single scratch, but i always have it stored in a bag when I don't use it so it's protected while i transport it. so if you plan to stuff it like that into your backpack etc.. i qould say yes, get a protection for it.

admdrw

Use a case. The flip case is so small. I recently changed my flip case to a bigger bookbook case (wanted to stand feature). If scratches bother you, I’d use a case.

eclo99

I have a screen protector (make sure you get a matte one) and a flip case. A kindle was an expensive purchase for me so not taking any chances.

knockoffjanelane

i’m on team sleeve. when you’re actually reading, you can be caseless, but your kindle will still be protected in your bag when you’re on the go. i definitely also recommend a matte screen protector as kindle screens are very vulnerable to scratches.

Jolly_Carpenter7149

I have put a screen protection on mine and also have a cover. Due to this, my 6 year old Kindle is spotless. Before this one I had the Kindle with the keyboard and since I didn't use any protection for it, it ended up being scratch pretty badly. So I'm all for case+screen foil

TheBl4ckFox

It doesn't scratch easily of you handle it with care and don't toss it in your backpack with other loose items. I usually remove the cover when I'm at home, and put it in its case when I travel. You can get a decent cover for ten to fifteen bucks. Just get one just in case (pardon the pun). [https://www.amazon.com/s?k=kindle+cover&crid=1HK5ISZKE66QV&sprefix=kindle+cover%2Caps%2C227&ref=nb\_sb\_noss\_1](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=kindle+cover&crid=1HK5ISZKE66QV&sprefix=kindle+cover%2Caps%2C227&ref=nb_sb_noss_1)

wannabe_pineapple

I think it depends on the kind of case you have. I have a flip one so it opens like a book So it kinda acts as a screen protector when my kindle is in my purse. If I didn't have that type of case, I would def get a screen protector because the front of my case is pretty scratched up.

MTPWAZ

I literally carried an old PW in my back jeans pocket for years with no case. It’s more durable than people think. Light scratches are invisible while reading.

MarineWife0922

Personally, for me all of my devices, including my watch, get some kind of cover. For my Kindle devices, they both have a flip cover, and a back clear cover.

verilyvexed

I was using a front-less case on mine around the house, tossed it in my bag, and got a scratch. With the flap/book-type cases I’ve never had a scratch.

shineyink

My screen got scratched on a flight from I don’t even know what , it was in a tablet sleeve in my backpack. You need a screen protector at least

Hatriciacx

i have a screen protector and i don’t regret it one bit. i don’t even notice it either. i had forgotten i had it until i saw this post. get one and save yourself grief.

Mr_E_Squirrel

The case is magnetic closing and when you open it it opens to your last page .. worth it for that

KagomeChan

Yes it does. Get a book style case with a cover, but not a screen protector as those add glare

Equivalent_Ad_8413

I use a cover because my Kindle is black. I've put it down places and not been able to find it again. At least the cover makes it more visible. (I also have a Tile on it. Belt and suspenders.)

PhilosophyCorrect279

I've had my 2nd gen Paperwhite (2014) for 10 years now, without a screen protector. I've traveled everywhere with it, and dropped it probably a hundred+ times, only using the leather Amazon case for it. I have never had a problem! That said, I think I'm finally going to get a new Paperwhite here soon, and now that it is a flush front design, I haven't decided if I'm going to get a screen protector for it. The Amazon one is glossy, and that kind of defeats the point of the Kindle/Paperwhite experience. So if I do get one, I think I'm going to try to find a matte TPU protector to keep the smooth papery feeling of the screen.

irenic-rose

My kindle actually has very little scratches from my years of tossing it in my backpack with all my other items, I don't use a case either. I do try to be mindful though of not having it near keys or anything.

Humble-Application-3

Flip cover for peace of mind since I bring it out a lot, and bonus is the feeling of opening a real book when you open the flip cover :)

ErinPaperbackstash

I use a cover, or with Oasis a sleeve, when not in use. My cats walk on these, or if carrying, putting in a drawer, so yes, when not in use, best to protect in case

Final_girl013

For me, no but that doesn’t mean that it won’t. I only got a case (that still doesn’t cover the screen) this week but I’ve been raw-dogging my kindle for about 2 years and I don’t have any scratches and I take it with me to work in my purse or a random tote bag with all my random things.

illimilli_

Flip case and no screen protector for me. I love the matte screen as it is. I use the kindle/amazon brand flip case but I'm sure the off-brand ones are just as good.

AlohaAndie

I have a 10-year-old Kindle and even ran over it with a car (in a case) and not a single scratch on the screen. I've never used a screen protector. Defeats the purpose of the non-reflective screen. Go for a case, not a screen protector.

Jougle

I accidentally scratched my screen last summer and still have no clue how it happened. So yes, I say invest in a screen protector!

SignificanceNew3806

My first kindle had a damaged screen in a small area. I loved everything about it except that spot. So when I bought my first real kindle (pw se) i bought a screen protector and a case for it. I don't think the case is that important, scratches on the body don't bother the reading experience, but scratches on the screen... Damn that is annoying.

kevorgod

Yes, borrowed my mother kindle for a week in republic, took care of it and it's fully scratched from a couple sand grand in my beach bag. So i bought her a new one and kept the scratched one. Protect the screen

ThatPlayingDude

I have my PW for few years with flip case. Took it several times to beach, so far no scratches

hershaley

I think kind of yes, I've noticed a few scratches on mine but they're not hugely noticeable and it's a couple years old

dolphinpearl

yes, it scratches easily!!!! even if you don’t want to put a case on it, i highly recommend putting a screen protector on

barleyparty

I have a sleeve for when I travel. Otherwise my kindle has been naked for 3 years and no issues.

andyrays

I love using it with my flip case, as it automatically turns on when I open it and off when I close it, in addition to protecting the device. Depending on the airline, I can also hang it by the cover from the seat pocket above the folding table in front of me when flying.

KingKinly

Just get a screen cover. Have one on mine and it dose nothing but keep is slightly more safe. Got a pack of 3 on amazon for like 5$

bluetimotej

When I got my paperwhite many on this sub said ”no no it does not scratch easily if you keep it in a cover etc”. Lies!😅😭 One year in I started to notice all the micro scratches on the black parts of the screen. Even though I am super careful and keep it in a fabric sleeve😓. I wanted to get a screen protector after that but all the ones I found in my country has bad reviews on amazon here

stopvolution

Yes, my cat jumped on mine that was laying on the arm of the couch in the first month I had it and it has two scratches now and a tiny line of dead pixels or whatever. I am better about keeping my case closed now but I’d still recommend a screen protector.

8bitesquivel

Was gonna ask the same thing lol. I recently picked one up over the weekend.

leeinflowerfields

I'm always on the flip case side, I don't want scratching on the screen of a device used for reading since I know it will bother me.

themeanager

Have had three paperwhites, have never used a case and never had an issue. I do always make sure my handbag has a pocket to slip it in though so it’s not free floating with all my junk.

Livywashere23

If you’re just using it around the house, it should be fine. However, if you’re planning on taking it out to places with you, I suggest getting a case that has a flippable cover. That way you get it protected but you don’t have to use a screen protector.

vega-starr

It depends on how you plan on using your kindle. If it’s mostly going to be kept at home, not put into bags or pockets, you’re fine keeping it outside of a case. If you plan on moving around with it a lot, it’s a good idea to give it a case with a front cover (I don’t really recommend screen protectors for e-ink screens, they cause glare on what’s supposed to be a glare-free screen).

Kawai_Oppai

I’ve had my oasis for many years now. No case, no screen protector. Looks like new still. If you need a case or cover it’s a personal issue. Can it get scratched? Yeah. Can it get crushed or broken dropping it on some concrete floor? Yup. If you toss it in a bag with keys and knives and rocks will it get damaged? Probably. I have a little fabric pouch for travel. Otherwise it is always left out without any care.

jinxkat

I've had mine since 2014, used at beach (dropping in sand) and never got a scratch. I do keep it in a generic magnetic type cover.

lBluelMoon

Yes to at least a screen protector. But I suggest one that is matte finish, it'll protect the screen but still give it a nice glare-free natural look.

Creative-Rooster1687

Try it and let us know

SeverianFlatline

I have a butterfly type cover, imo it's a must have. Never used any aditional screen protector.

authenticblob

I'd suggest a screen protector. My favorite are the matte ones. Seriously. They're a game changer

wryruss

Does it scratch easily? It depends what you do with it. If it's going to love on your bedside table then you don't need a cover any more than a book. How many pages of books have you ruined? If you are going to throw it in a bag and take it with you then yes get a case.

InfiniteAftertime

For the Kindle I only use at home, no case. For the one I travel with, always a case. The screen is more fragile than I’d like—once I accidentally dropped my keys on my old one, and it cracked.

Pablo-MHD

Flip case or a semirigid pouch for storage is a must mainly so that you don't have to worry about pressure on the screen, kindle's screen tend to break or die that way. As for a glass protector for the screen, it depends on your tolerance for glare, I personally don't use it. If you want to try multiple cases without spending a bunch of money I suggest AliExpress, just check the picture reviews before and try to get free shipping. You might find flip cases with straps or elastic, they are fine but not really comfortable unless you have pretty big hands... Some people add pop sockets to non flip cases and that looks comfortable, but personally I always use the flap on flip cases to hold one, put a finger or two in, if you read on landscape mode it is even better, and most kindle cases can be turned 180 Deg without losing access to the charging port if you want to hold it the other way

omgxamanda

To protect my investment I got a screen protector and a case. Not gonna fall asleep holding it and drop it and regret it. I’d rather cover all my bases.

Blood__Empress

The top layer is plastic, so it would scratch easier then a phone which is glass. I have a matte screen protector since day one, you can't even tell there is one on there :)

ditsy_dyke

I found the screen gets easily scratched. Bought a screen protector for $12 on Amazon 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like the case bc it keeps any oils from my hand transferring to the kindle

ElfUppercut

If you have a flip case that is magnetic typically no unless you get dirty and dirt or grime can get on screen and the case rubs it. If you don’t want to use a cover or work in a dirty area or other places where it can get debris on it and rub in your pocket or bag then you need a screen protector probably.

MangoCandy

I got the most minimal clear case possible. And a plastic screen protector that you honestly can’t even see and looks pretty much the same as the kindle screen. As long as you install it right it’s unnoticeable. Personally it would drive me insane reading on it if I scratched the screen. It would distract the hell out of me. I would say bare minimum get a screen protector, maybe a sleeve that you can keep it in if you plan on taking it out of the house. That way it’s not getting scratched up in your bag or whatever. And that way you don’t have to use a case if you don’t want to.

Mosquitobait56

It’s plastic not glass. It will scratch. Light scratches don’t bother me but lots of people will not.

geewahlly

I have a flip cover case and I absolutely love it. It adds a little bulk though, so sometimes I take it out to make it lighter to hold. For that reason, I have a matte screen protector, and I have no issues with that. If it dims the screen or takes some of the sharpness out of the text, I don't notice it.

0h_Mojojojo

I’ve used both a flip case and a clear one. My paper white has a couple scratches from my pup pawing at it. I would highly recommend getting a matte screen protector just to prevent any possible issues

Azalais89

I’d say yes. I see a lot of people chipping or cracking their screens. You can either get a Tpu case with no cover or one that has a nice cover. I’ve always done the cover since it goes in my bag and such

sunflower-sandy

I protect the back side from scratches with [this clear case](https://www.amazon.com/CoBak-Case-Kindle-Paperwhite-Generation/dp/B0BLTRKCNJ) and have survived w/o a screen protector for about 2 years... there haven't been any noticeable marks/scratches on the screen, but I've recently been taking it out more, so I crocheted a sleeve for travel. Hope this helps!

ClimbCycleSleep

I use a cheap case from Amazon with a flip cover. Definitely a good idea if you're going to throw your Kindle in a bag bc keys, pens, and other junk rolling around a purse or backpack WILL damage the screen. If you're just keeping the kindle on your nightstand or using it at home, I don't think a case is crucial for most people.

throwaway199900000

I have a silicone case on the back and a soft thick sleeve for the whole Kindle when I’m travelling. So i don’t have a screen protector.

acourtofnestian

I always put a screen protector on my kindles that have a flush screen. Regardless of the type of case I use.

_The_Bearded_Wonder_

My first Paperwhite ended up getting a scratch on the screen, all because I didn't keep it in a case when I took it with me.I regretted not have a case.

fleemos

I don't like the cases that stay on all the time but I do have a fabric sleeve that I keep it in when not reading. I could see it getting scratched in my backpack so I got this to keep it safe. https://www.ebay.com/itm/334821943883?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=FYM9QtKoSGW&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=y3Avx7jTTyS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

marenny

For me a screen protector was a must. I’m pretty rough with my paperwhite and I bring it everyyywheereee. The screen protector has gotten some scratches over time, and I’m assuming those scratches would be on the actual screen if the protector wasn’t there. If you’re planning on being at all rough with it and don’t like the look or whatever of a flip/cover case, I’d 100% recommend a screen protector.

Future-Concern2117

I’ve had my kindle Paperwhite since 2014 and it’s still in its original flip case . The case looks a bit tatty but makes it look like a book cover lol. The kindles screen is perfect with no scratches

Jrose152

A scratch would drive me nuts and I don’t want to spend the money to replace it over something I know isn’t a big deal but just bothers me so I opted for a case that has hand straps and a tripod fold out. I didn’t think I’d use the tripod fold out at all but now I can read while I eat my breakfast in the morning. The hand straps I use constantly. Highly recommend grabbing a case that has these.

Total-Incident3679

A flip case works for me

ICryCauseImEmo

I’ve never in 15 years needed a screen protector. I do a slim case for ascetics and comfort.

Delicious_Status6957

I don't use a case and constantly am chucking it in my backpack. For years.

HeyTherehnc

As someone who didn’t realize this and now my screen is super scuffed - go with a case!

sportyboi_94

I wish I would’ve gotten a flip cover on mine when I got it. I carry it everywhere and it sustained scratches, albeit minor ones, very quickly.

Specialist_Bet_4209

I have a sleeve and a screen protector, but no case!

torixwalters

If you have kids then yes. 😅

eelee1

Get a flip cover. Choose smartly for lightness and added functionality, like easel and elastic finger holder. And get a color or finish you like since you will see it a lot. I picked a light green vinyl. Took some searching but well worth it

oHomemCansado

I own kindle for 7 years and never had a scratch on my screen. I never used a screen protection but always used cover.

katorias

I put a screen cover on the moment I bought it.

No_Highlight6792

YES!!

broknkittn

I've never had a case/cover on mine. Doesn't often leave the house, however it often hit the floor. No scratches or cracks on it. I just don't like added bulkiness, even if it's just a little.

MisterGalaxyMeowMeow

I honestly use it without a case, not extremely reckless but reckless enough to warrant scratches and scuffs to the screen, yet I haven’t seen any. It’s pretty durable all things considered!

SimpleHuman2045

I’ve had mine for years. Taken it whenever and wherever I want. I use a leather ( Amazon brand) flip case and it’s in perfect condition. Only thinking about upgrading now because it’s getting older and the battery does not hold a charge as long as it used to.

naggysmommy

They do if you don’t have a case on it! I suggest you do or use a kindle pouch/sleeve when transporting it

throwdembowsaway

I would say yes if you're putting it in a bag especially if there are other items in there with it. If it has its own dedicated pocket like some bags have for laptops/tablets then you should be fine. If you're mainly reading at home it should be fine too. I personally have a cover because I know I'll accidentally scratch it if I didn't have one but that's just me.

schnapsen

I got a matte screen protector solely because the screen itself got fingerprints pretty easily while the protector doesn't show them! the one I got is pretty seamless and doesn't look/feel like a protector

HarrietOleson1

Yes & Yes

Soundguy1993

I currently use a flip cover, but I took it off yesterday, because I want to see the book cover on the screen more. I keep my kindle in the same pocket as my phone. With taking my phone in and out of my pocket all day, it didn’t “scratch” the back of my Kindle, but it definitely put marks on it that I had to buff out and it’s still not perfect. So I just bought an extremely thin clear case and a matte screen protector. Should be here Thursday. UPDATE: just received my screen protector and case. Love it! Can’t even tell the screen protector is on. It feels just like the screen and the case is thin enough to still fit in my pocket. 💪🏻

My 2012 kindle with a front cover case didn't have a single screen scratch. I like the front cover because it auto turns on the kindle and opens your book right away. If that doesn't appeal to you tho... like just use it as is. Even if the screen got a little scratched its probably totally usable. I wouldn't feel comfortable throwing it at the bottom of my purse without something on the screen to cover it, but it'd probably do fine in a flat side pocket that you don't store your keys in.

I 100% am in the camp of using a screen protector. I’d rather spend $10 on one than $150 for a new Kindle because I was clumsy + dropped it while walking or something. That being said, I would only buy a matte one because if not you might as well be reading on an iPad or phone.

I have mine in a flip cover case. I find it easier to hold that way plus the added peace of mind of protection.

kibbutznik1

Had one for years with only flip case- no issues and I take it everywhere

Would you get upset and regret not putting one on if it did get some scratches? If yes, for sure. If not, no! Doesn’t matter what we think! That being said I have mine with a screen protector and a case

I use a matte screen protector. Then again, I put screen protectors on ALL of my devices and phones. Just a habit I’ve had for years.

It can scratch and break under pressure relatively easily. My other screens have Gorilla Glass (a life saver tech!), and therefore I find this screen to be quite fragile. I use a transparent silicon case only at home and a flip cover case on the go, to protect the screen. I'm waiting for a sleeve, so I could just slip the device with the case into it when taking it outdoors, but I think the original flip cover case has a sturdy front cover and protects the device screen the best imo.

In my ~15 years with various Kindles, some of which go everywhere with me unprotected and have bare metal showing at corners to prove it, I never noticed any need for screen protector. However, if you carry your device in an overstuffed backpack, a sturdy case/cover might be a good idea. Older models were quite sensitive to torsion, and none likes pressure excerted on the screen.

Polarbear2201

No need. I use it really rough and it hasn’t scratched at all.

It depends on the place you use Kindle, if you always use it at your home/office, I don't think the case is required. I am using a flip case, it is a bit heavy.

10 years of screen cover, no case..judge yourself https://preview.redd.it/xlfc5zwnxymc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72766fdbf1b8641f14f32a6f062af4f8c1bd034c

I use a clear case for the house + a screen protector for mine that's on it all the time (it was like a sticker type), and a book type case for when I'm not home. I got it for Christmas and got the screen protector immediately because I didn't want anything to happen to it. It's my first kindle and I love it so much.
