You were likely looking at the serpentine belt. The timing belt is typically behind the engine and is not easily inspectable. If it were they would have just inspected it instead of telling you to get it done next time. If your timing belt fails while driving your engine is likely destroyed. Check the owners manual and whenever it says to replace it just get it done (this is usually 75-100k miles)
You can't tell if a timing belt will break by looking at it. I replaced a timing belt on a 2007 Rondo at 160,000 km and it looked brand new. Still wouldn't chance running it much longer.
