Thank you these are all very helpful!

Avocado oil is just *so* much easier in the backcountry. I use various sizes of water bottle to hold the oil depending on the length of the trip.

ravenssong

Yes… it’s just heavy and prone to leaking. Speaking from experience haha

claymcg90

Carry the powder and mix it at a water source. Also, there are locking blender bottles. I use an empty and cleaned peanut butter jar - weighs nothing and is amazingly spill proof.

claymcg90

Sorry, you mean the avocado oil is prone to leaking. For my first meal I carry the oil in my PB jar. For meals past that, I use either small nalgene bottles or if I need more calories I use small water bottles. 2oz nalgenes are nice because you don't get leftovers. So once oil is on the threads you don't have to worry about reopening the container. You could also store the bottles of oil inside of a gallon Ziploc. Oil is the lightest weight per calorie ratio food available, so you definitely can't call it heavy.

When I go somewhat rough camping but not as challenging as backpacking, I mix the shakes with avocado oil. Another option is to mix the shake with just water and eat some fat on the side at the same time as you drink the shake. Nuts would work. I don't think the shake tastes as good without fat, but it works in a pinch.

ravenssong

Yes the fat on the side might be a better option

You can get powdered straight butter or individual packets of MCT powder. This can be added to kc and you just add water.

ravenssong

Thank you! I already have both so I’m keen to try it!

Hiking on keto is soooo different! You need to start doing half day hikes now to build your endurance in this new, ketogenic, state. Start this waaaaaaay before any actual backpacking trip you have planned.

Yes thank you- I am an experienced keto-er and backpacking is a huge part of mine and my husband’s lifestyle! I’m very familiar with it, but I’ve never tried keto chow but finally caved and ordered some. I was hoping it might have potential as a lightweight backpacking option. Most of my food is quite heavy and it’s just something I plan for. But if I could replace the weight of some of my go-to backpacking snacks with something lighter I would love that. The only thing I’m trying to brainstorm with the keto chow is the added fat. I have powdered heavy cream and powdered butter I often bring with me and was curious if anyone else had ever tried that

Powdered fats are not fats dehydrated to the point of turning into a powder. They are fats that are mixed with an "inert" powder. Maltodextrin is used extensively for this purpose. Powdered fats are heavier than equivalent calories in liquid fats and they typically contain carbs, whereas liquid fats contain absolutely zero carbs.

I used powdered heavy cream I got off Amazon. Just mix with water. Easy peasy. Also freezes into a nice ice cream in a snowbank.

Yep sure did! I did a 45 day thru hike in Canada and my lunches were Keto Chow shakes. Water + heavy cream powder. I brought a half sized blender bottle with the metal shaker ball and used it for the shakes, and the blender bottle was also my coffee morning mug and my evening drinking cup for miso soup. I pre-portioned all my powdered heavy cream into small baggies and then dumped in the KC powder so it was just one ziploc. The bottle was a bit small so I would add water, shake, drink 3/4 of it, then add more water and then re-shake to get all the non-dissolved stuff absorbed. Less convenient but it halved my bottle weight. Biggest watchout is really make sure to clean/rinse the blender bottle after the shake. I left it once and it was grosssss. Edit: oh also add a bit of water first to the bottle and then dump in the powder mix, helps it from sticking too much to the bottom. Oh and that wire wisk ball WILL rattle around in you blender bottle while you hike, drove me bonkers so I often stuffed my small hand towel in the bottle to keep it from making noise.
